RE: Out to 400 yards or so.

Allright, after some investigation the best rifle would be a 7MM STW shooting factory Nos ammo and 120 grain lead you get a 3800velocity and a 27" drop at 500. This is zeroed in at 100. However this cannon is too much powder for me for just plinking and targeting. So some more research found that I' m not all that impressed as I once was with the .220 swift pushing a 40grain out to 500 with a 33.8 in drop and gettin barrel wash after a few thousand rounds.

And even more suprising found that I think I' m going to build a .243 pushing a 55 grain bullet out to 500 with only a 29.1 inch drop.

As suggested by many of you the .22-250 pushes a 40grain chunk of lead out to 500 with a 32.7 inch drop and not as flat as the .243

What' s your thoughts? Anyone have a flatter trajectory than below.

.220 = 40 grain = 4050 velocity = win. type = -33.8@500
.22-250 = 40 grain = 4150 velocity = win. type = -32.7@500
.243 = 55 grain = 4025 velocity = win. type = -29.1@500
.257wby = 87 grain = 3825 velocity = wby. type = -30.1@500
.270wby = 100grain = 3760 velocity = wby. type = -32.3@500
.300wbymag = 150grain = 3600 velocity = wby. type = -31.9@500
7mm STW = 120grain = 3800 velocity = nos. type = -27.0@500
6mm Rem = 55 grain = 4000 velocity = nos. type = -30.2@500

to answer bobo, most army snipers use a 300 wsm now, I know u weren' t meaning actual snipers, but look at this round if your looking for one because it is awesome.

Also check out a .223, they are an amazing rifle, and will shoot as accurate as you want them too.

I don' t know where you came up with that info but it' s wrong. U.S. Army and Marines use the 308 Win, not a 300 WSM. There were rumors of some 300 Win Mags being used in Vietnam.

b0b0, I would be more concerned with the rifle' s accuracy and your shooting capabilitys than I would with the trajectory of a particular round. When you start stretching the distances it naturally becomes harder to shoot sub MOA. Once you find a pet load you can memorize the ballistics of it, then all you will need to do is dial in the scope.
With the cartridges you listed above they are all pretty much within a few inches of each other at 500 yards. (original post listed out to " 400 yards" ) You' ll be doing good to shoot that well from field positions. I note that all are using the lighter weight bullets in a given caliber in your list. Sure they shoot flat out to mid ranges but the heavier pills catch up usaully due to their better BC' s. What effect does a 10mph cross wind have on a 40 grain bullet that started out at 4000fps vs a 168 grain match @ 3000fps.
You want banjo string trajectory?....it comes with a price.... use a big case, efficient powder and a high BC bullet. As far as a factory cartridge is concerned, try punching in a 257 WBY using a 100 grain Barnes XLC doing appx 3700fps, it might suprise you!

jest some thoughts, doubleA

I would be most concerned about where Bobo is getting his numbers?

Are these figures while on Mars with less gravity?

Yes they are optomistic rather than realistic.

Though I don' t have any real to lif experience with the exception of my friends 7mmSTW, I recieved the balistic chart from a web site.

Can anyone tell me what a sleeve is?

By the way the site is below if anyone cares.

Duble A can you compare the kick of a 257 wby with something else?
