Football boy pretends to know what he is talking about but posts like his last one along with many others give away the fact that he reads too much and lacks greatly in experience.Get some experience and learn something before trying to advise others.

ORIGINAL: Aught Six

There were rumors of some 300 Win Mags being used in Vietnam.
Carlos Hathcock used a Winchester 70 in .300 Win Mag as his primary rig in Vietnam.
Actually he used a Springfield bolt action 30-06 and a Remington 700 in .308. both were modified.

Any good books on Carlos Hathcock? I here a lot of people talking about him lately. Stopped by a guy on side of the road selling ammo cans to buy a couple and we are talking about guns next thing you know bam he brings up Carlos Hathcock. That was on saturday, then I get on this great board on Monday next thing you know everyones talking about Carlos Hathcock. Maybe there was a special on the History Channel that I missed?

I will be going to the website www.snipershide.com to read up on him a bit.

IT SEEMS KINDA STRANGE THAT EVERYBOBY TALKS ABOUT BARREL WASH ON A .220 SWIFT , BUT 150 FPS SLOWER OR THE NEW .223 WSSM AROUND THE SAME FPS IS OKAY . IT HAS BEEN THE NUBER ONE COMPARE TOO ROUND IN VARMIT RONDS FOR 80 YRS . AND STILL ALL YOU HEAR IS BAD THINGS ABOUT IT

There's alot of factors when shooting at high ranges, The wind has to be perfect. you have to wait for it. you have to have near-perfect sighting, that is very high. And alot of time at the feild. you don't want an ultra light. You want an ultra heavy.

And carlos also set the world record (hint record in recorded) sniper shot at a 50 caliber modified machine gun to shoot one bullet with a scope, at 1000 some-odd yards. It's not the gun. it's the person.

The .220 swift got its bad reputation because of two main reasons.
1. not allowing the barrel to cool down enough between shots.
2. reloaders wanting to push the envelope and hit/surpass 4,000+ FPS.

I am curious, there is a bunch of guns mentioned on here but no one mentioned the 7mm ultra mag. I currently shoot this rifle and love the ballistics that it gives me. I have killed several deer out to 500 yrds and once I start reloading I believe I will be able to boost the capabilities....

Anyone else have any experience with this rifle? All the information that I can get on it the better. Thanks

RE: Out to 400 yards or so.

Stone cold-I own two 300ultramags,two 7mmstw's and a 7mmultramag and am very happy with them. However, developing and maintaining the necessary shooting skills to be consistantly accurate at distances of 400 yards or more requires a great deal of practise amounting to at least several hundred rounds per year.Since these cartridges have barrel lives limited to about 1500 rounds before throat erosion causes accuracy to diminish you must either be prepared to rebarrel them on a regular basis or have several guns of similar ballistics to practise with to prevent burning out barrels. For this reason they are not wise cartridge choices for many shooters.
