Default 28 Nosler

I just read the new Shooting Times magazine. Lane Simpson tested the 28 Nosler, personally I wasn't impressed. It doesn't do anything that 7 STW and the 7 RUM wont do. Also the Nosler Patriot rifle had so much freebore that Lane Simpson had to pull the bullets and reseat them farther out to the lands, as far as the receiver would allow, the Nosler has a short long action, shorter than the 700. The best groups he got with it was 1.22" 3 shots at 100 yards, after modifying the loads. Pretty piss poor for a high dollar rifle, in my opinion. Looks to me like Nosler dropped the ball on this one.

I looked at the nosler rifle.before it did not impress me much. As far as the 28 nosler was looking at building one but again not much more then I already have. So back to looking at the 26 nosler.

+1. My boss has a Remington 700 Sendero in the 7 STW that will shoot 1/2" groups all day. Thinking of buying it from him, thinking about it hard after reading about the 28 Nosler.

Yeah I 3 7mm rem mags and a 7x61 sharp and hart that with my handloads and original factory ammo from norma is comparable to the 7mm wby. So the 28 nosler won't be much more advantage in getting it. Going to get a rifle built have a rem adl in another 7mm mag I got real cheap just for the action. Don't have any 6.5 cal was looking at 264 win but the 26 nosler really beats it. Two years ago at the NRA show in Harrisburg looked at the nosler rifle not that impressed with it, for that kind of money.

This is what nosler told me at the NRA show in Harrisburg, normal barrel ware is around 600-700 rounds if don't shoot fast and let cool down and proper cleaning. Know somebody with a 6.5/300 wby and they have close to 300 rounds throughout it with out a problem.

It's all about the next best thing. Gadgets can make anyone better but real shooters can use just about anything to get the job done.

I have all my rifles built, once I put 2000-2500 in a rifle whats a 600 dollar rebarrel every 5 years, after using the large cases since 1986 my thoughts are, figure out your max range you wanna take your game, say its 750 yards, choose a bullet that has a high BC, and is known for performing well. figure the velocity you need to have the required energy at your max range, choose the smallest cartridge that will give the needed velocity, buy the parts have a smith screw it togather. you have yourself a rifle with the most longevity possible to do what you need to do.
I have a 7mm stw basicaly a 25 year old 28 nosler, maybe a bit better performance, but for long range shooting you can put a 30" barrel on a 7mm practical (7mm/300 winny) and get the same performance as a 28 nosler and increase barrel life 2X
I've posted about my 6.5 gibbs a lot
look at the numbers here
from nosler
the 26 nosler runs a 140 at max 3303 fps burning 88 gr of powder
the 264 runs it 2970 burning 59 gr of powder
my 6.5 will run a 140 berger at 3200 from the 29" barrel and only burns 61.7 gr of powder in a modified 270 case
to put that in perspective the 26 nosler burns 42% more powder to gain 3% increase in velocity, there are many gibbs rifles with button rifled barrels that will outrun the 26 with a 30" barrel, mine is a kreiger cut rifled 8 twist so it runs a bit higher pressure than button rifled so my loads are slower.

Know two people with the 7mm stw, one also has the 6.5/300 wby and a 6.5/270 wsm. They had them for a long time. Baltimore county police snipers had some 7mm stw rifle that's why the one guy got his he was a police sniper. Still looking for a round it's going to be at lest another year to I get the funds together. Was really looking at a 30/378 wby but won't fit in my action it is a 7mm rem mag. Going to go with a lija barrel. This need to find a right cartiage for my needs. Have a 257 wby, 300 wby, 338 win, and 7mm rem. So I think a 6.5 will fill need nicely.
