I got a remy 7600 30.06 that ive been hunting deer with. Ive always figured i can use it for moose(because i know i can)but i also always wanted a 35 whelen. Anyone think its worth it to get the whelen? Whats the diff. in balistics? Thanks allot for answering all my questions!

The regular old 30-06 is fine for moose. I'd suggest using premium bullets in 180 gr. Basically, the Whelen is a 35-06. Ammo may be harder to find, but the Whelen will definitely kill a moose.

ballistically the whelen has it way over the 06. i have both and they both kill well. depends on how you are w/ recoil too if your lookin at gettin a whelen in a pump like your 06. i have a whelen pump carbine and you wanna hang on to her

you're talking about buying a rifle chambered in .35 whelen?

If I were going to buy a rifle for moose, I think I'd look at a .338win.mag. or .375H&H

I think a .30-06 with 180-220grs will do the job though.

ahhahahaa you do know moose arent considered dangerous right???? the biggest moose ive seen killed was by a 6.5x55 sweed and it melted it in its tracks at 40 yds. my sister shot that moose when she was 12. it dressed 932. my mom shot one w/ a damned old 308 leg breaker that weighed 911lbs and that one went about 20 yds. it was shot w/ a 150gr corelokt @ 275 yds.
my grandfather shot one w/ a 220 gr 06 at 10 yds but that was butt the ear and as you might suspect that one dropped instantly too. ive yet to be drawn but if i were ide take either one of my whelens or one of my .350's w/ either a 225 nosler PT or a 250 hornady interlock RN

I used to try and fill caliber gaps in my arsenal, but now I am trying to fill Bullet Grain gaps.. For example.. I have a 243 and a 7mm-08 they but I can't get a 243 with a 140 grain bullet.. So I got the 7mm-08.. But I also have a 35 Wheelen and I do like it, but since you have an 06 and can overlap the bullet weights with the 35 I would opt for a different round just to be a little different.

Your 06 with a quality bullet will do just fine. As would your thought about a .35 whelan...fine moose, deer, bear,etc choice where ranges are 250ish & under. A friend just used his 7600/35 whelan to take a moose last week.

I have used a number of cartridges to harvest moose & had great success. I use premium well constructed bullets such as Partitions, barnes, etc. However I made the decision a few years ago for a dedicated moose/elk gun. I chose the .338wm mainly b/c of its adaptability for NA game animals. I have also always liked/wanted one. I plan to hunt Yukon moose and the grizzly bear card solidified the .338wm as my choice. I have killed 2 bull moose, 2 bull elk & 2 deer with my handload 225gr Noslers flung from my .338wm. Awesome terminal performance and no tracking has been required.

OK, here's the deal. I checked your profile to see what your situation is. You're young and single so if you can afford it buy as many guns as you can. Later on in life a new gun will take a back seat to diapers and rent. If you were older and married I would have told you never to let your wife know that a gun you already own will work. You will need justification to spend money on things as frivolous as a gun, so never pass up an opportunity to justify a new gun.
