There are many options as others have alreadystated them. I would do yourself a favor and look atany and all firearms that apeal to you and fall in your price range. I love my savages, but also understand that others, such as Howa, Ruger, etc...offer good products well. Look at all recommended andmakeyour choice.

Man, for that kind of money you can pretty much go to any gunshop and try out a large variety of guns and come out of there pretty happy. Asking a question like that on these forums is going to get you an awful lot of suggestions, but until you go and shoulder several guns you are never really going to know if the gun is right for you. But caliber wise, I would go for something in the .243-.308 range. Stay away from the magnums until you have shot enough to be throughoughly comforatable with firearms.

i know this exact set up is more than your allowance but you can get a T/C Encore in laminate or wood within your price range. the one showed is my T/C Pro Hunter .25-06 Stainless /w Hardwoods Camo Stocks and Bull Barrel. the nice thing about these rifles, the barrels are interchangable. so instead of spending $500 to $600 on each new rifle...you only spend $185 to $250 on another barrel.

. . .I would hesitate to buy a Savage.

My dad's M77 failed to get under 2" most of the time and every bullet printed to a new zip code.
