Like has already been stated...go to a large gunshop and try several different guns. You will eventually find one that "fits" you. That will be the one you should get. If a gun doesn't fit correctly it won't shoot to its best potential for you. I loved the idea and price of the SS Tikka's and was about to buy one.But after handling one I passed because it just didn't feel right to me.
Caliber wise is pretty much whatever you can handle. I "personally" think the .243 and such are better left to varmits and smaller deer. The 7mm and up for me is a better minimum for deer. The good ol 30-06 is hard to beat and if you decide to try hunting other big game it will handle "most" anything in North America.

I don't own one for some reason, but the 308 is a great average recoil hunting round. I own the 300 WSM which is kind of like big brother.

You know everyone knocks the SAVAGE. If your looking at a budget and want a gun & scope for under 600.00 dollars. This is the gun to go for. It's your first and it will prob. be banged around and dropped a few times unless you carry it like you would a baby. You can get a nice savage and a scope from swfa for less then 600.00 . Also see what you like.... wood or syn. But going and buying rem. 700 or a brown. a-bolt just cause people here tell you.. is not good. They are great guns and will get you a lifetime out of it, but that doesn't mean your going to be happy with it. The biggest thing is to hold it and see how it feels. Name doesn't matter right now.
Believe me this will not be your last rifle as everyone on here can tell you, you will see something later and then buy that, and so on. then it will be a collection.

Good Luck

Ruger, Remington, or Savage are all good brands in that order.

If your used to a shotgun try a Remington 760 or 7600. They feel just like a shotgun, are accurate, reliable and run about $450 new to $300 used. Everyone in my entire family hunts with a 760 or a 7600 and out of 9 guns we have never had any problems.

Ditto on what chr103yod said if the shotguns you are used to are pumps. Irecently picked up a 7600 in 7mm-08 and love it.

Handles GREAT, very reliable, quick follow-up shot without moving your hands from their grip on the rifle, andaccurate!

Don't see how you could go wrong with a 7600 in30-06 as a first rifle and you can easily find used ones in great shape.
