sorry for not explaining what for I ment, compared to other big bore calibers such as .44 mag or .375H& H
the 45-70 beats the snot out of the .44 Mag, and the .375 H&H is a different animal all together.

On a list of top 5 guns that I intend to acquire in the next couple of years the 45-70 ranks about 3rd. A Hawkins m/l, a 44 mag revolver and then a 45-70. If you want pure knockdown power with the history behind it to boot, the 45-70 is tops. That is a helluva big bullet with a helluva lot of powder behind it.

Now that the T-REX is gone, there is no game on this planet that can not be taken with the 45-70.

i have a siamese mauser that has been chambered in .45-70 that is a great hunting rifle. i shoot 350 grain soft points at high velocity and get wonderful results on deer. i topped it witha leupold VXIII 1.75-6 heavy duplex and consider it the best brush and timber gun i own. i can't wait to try it on hogs.

I think I'd get a 450 Marlin in stead

The 45-70 doesn't really compare to either the 44 Mag or the 375 H&H. To me that's kind of like comparing the .308 to a 357 magnum and a 338 Win. mag.

You know it amazes me some of the questions people comes up with. Questions like these makes me reconsider gun control to keep them out of the wrong hands. Just kidding, kinda
I agree with you, and I'm NOT kidding.

The 45-70 holds a place in hunting that few other cartriges can fill. It can go from mild to wild in the same gun. An awsome deer rifle and plenty for big bears or that stuff in Africa if you can afford to go there. With the lighter loads it's a pleasure to shoot, and as much fun as is legal with a firearm. The Marlin 1895 is as accurate as many bolt rifles, often capable of groups under 1" at 100 yds. I have access to my son's handi rifle and it to is a real shooter. These things are addictive!

I would go with a marlin guide gun in 45-70 over a .375, but I don't plan on going to africa where the 375 is min. most places.
