RE: New Remington 710 rifle

Hello'

I did two things today one was buy a 710 and two was join this forum. Why? Because the first time I put the bolt in and pulled the trigger it would not return and I could not get the bolt to function. It and the safety are locked in place? I've had at least a 100 different firearms and probably half were bolt actions. This is a brand new gun! What have done wrong or is it the gun? Any ideas out there or addresses on the web to search. I know the smart thing to do is bring it right back and I probably will, but maybe there is a simple answer to the question?

i had a brand new 710 once and the thing jammed on me at the range. plus the bolt was real rough. smart thing to do is to return it and get something else. i sold mine and will never regret it. only thing i regret is buying the thing in the first place. guess i should of done research on it before buying it. good luck to ya.

Wow, this topic has popped up again. I traded my 710 in on a Winchester about 1 year to the date that I bought it. It did put meat on the table, but after about 100 rounds through it the things started to develop a crack where the clip slides up near the bolt. And to think that I was one of the ones who really defended Remingtons sorry excuse for a quality [&:]gun.

RE: New Remington 710 rifle

Funny that this thread popped up again so recently.

I had been considering the Remington 700 in .300 Ultra Mag, but I decided that it is just too much gun. So when I was at the store today looking at shotguns and picking up my last doe tag, I checked out what they had in 7mm magnum. The 710 was on the shelf and I picked it up. I liked the feel of it, and was mildly happy with the detachable magazine. The salesperson said that they hadn't had any complaints about the gun that they were aware of. They didn't have any 7mm magnum in stock, but they were going to call another store tomorrow to see if they could get one.

I think that I'm going to stop by in the morning and tell her to forget it. I'll drop an extra couple of hundred bucks and go with the 700, or maybe another gun comletely.

A few years ago, I bought a Remington 597 .22, and it was the biggest piece of junk I have ever shot. I shot about 300 rounds through it, and I about 25% of them failed to eject. Remington was no help at all. I had to drive the gun 50 miles each way to the "authorized repair facility" for them to replace the extractor. The gunsmith told me that it was a common problem and they were seeing it a lot. He also told me that I would always have to shoot high velocity rounds through the gun, or it would jam on a regular basis. I ended up selling the gun to a person who didn't mind paying the extra money for the high velocity rounds and I bought a Ruger 10/22. Never had a problem with it.

When I first picked up the 710, my first thought was, "It's like the 597's big brother." But the salesperson insistence that the gun was decent let me think that maybe this gun was different. I should have known better. I have to reiterate that I have never fired this gun, but reading a lot of the bad reviews this gun has gotten has made me think twice.

I know a lot of people swear by Remington, but they way that their customer service treated me has made me very weary of them.

I bought a remington 710 today a youth model in 243win it is short and inexpensive I paid 250.00 at walmart I like the shortness and the capability to draw up in the brush or the truck (on private property) and not worry about what happens to it compared to the ruger compact 243win with wood stock wich costs 450.00 with no scope. I've shot alot of blacktails (on my wall to prove it) here in oregon some hold records and some don't all with big guns 30-06, 7mm 300 winmag etc. it tears the meat up to bad when you can't make a head shot and on a trophy you wouldn't want to do that.I passed up a 3 point and a forked horn today. Ohh!! on the west coast we only count one side!!!its only the second day of the season I'm holding out for my dream buck!!!

Good luck with your 710. I have a feeling you are going to need it. If you have record bucks hanging on the wall and still bought a 710, IMO you know more about deer hunting than you do about rifles. Again good luck.

You more than likely will love the heck out of your 710, at least for awhile till the newness rubs off and you start finding its shortfalls. I noticed that they are now selling a new version of it called the 770, where they addressed a lot of the weaknesses of the 710. Anyways, good luck with it, I know that I loved mine, the fit was great for me, but when I found cracks in the reciever where the clip slides in near the bolt I just had to get rid of it.

I would like to say this. I have been shopping for a new rifle for 3 years now and I found one that I liked. Granted the Remington is pretty accurate out of the box most of the time but that is the only thing it has going for it. Every Remington 710 that I picked up whether it b at Gander Mountain, Dicks Sporting Goods, Cabelas, Walmart, or the friendly local gun shop. Every single one of them the bolt was rough and akward. I didn't care for the akwardness of the safety either. I myself just picked up a Savage model 116 FHSS chambered in 30.06. And with mounting and boresighting a 4-12x40 Simmons scope I am putting 1 inch groups together at 100 yards with Federal Vital-Shok 165 Grain Nosler Ballistic Tip rounds. I love this rifle and I think u would b better off with a Savage. I have shot Remingtons and Savages and I would pick a Savage package series over the Remington 710 Series anyday hands down

At the risk of being called an "a--hole"........

The move now is to put gear on the market that is "affordable".

Leupold's done it with the Rifleman, Remington's doing it with the 710.

I'd sooner take a Leupold topped Remington over anything else...but it won't be the 710/Rifleman.

There's no bargain in "affordable".

Good Gear sells itself.........
