The ballistics are slightly better than for the 300ultramag,but brass and ammunition arevery expensive.Recoil is also considerable and barrel life is quite short.

THATS THE PROBLEM WITH EVERYONE THINKING THEY NEED THAT BIG MAG TO GET THE JOB DONE AND PUT DOWN THAT ANIMAL, WELL I TELL YOU WHAT THAT 300MAG ANT GOT A THING ON MY TRUSTY 06 AND I KNOW YOUR GOING TO SAY THE 300 SHOOTS FLATTER WELL WHEN YOUR SHOOTING OUT OVER 300YRDS.IT DONT MATTER WHAT CAL. YOUR SHOOTING YOU ARE STILL GOING TO HAVE TO COMPENSATE FOR BULLET DROP AND SHOOT PLACEMENT IS STILL THE KEY TO TAKING GAME CLEANLY. SO WHEN YOUR TALKING 12INCHES WHATS 4 MORE. HAD ANOTHER GUY ON MY GOAT WITH A 300WSM TOOK HIM 5 SHOOTS TO KEEP HIS GOAT DOWN AND ANOTHER WITH A 25-06 TOOK HIS WITH ONE SHOT I PUT IN 2 AND ONE MORE FOR INSURANCE TO GET MY GOAT AND BELEAVE ME WHEN I SAY THEY ARE TOUGH ANIMALS BUT THAT GETS ME BACK TO RELOADING FOR THE 06 I PUT IN 65GRAINS TO GET 2800FPS YOU PUT IN SOMETHING LIKE 75GRAINS TO GET 200 HUNDERED MORE FPS.AT3000 DUH

As a RUM owner, or previous owner, I stay away from the 30-378. I don't like any of the weatherby lines myself. Too much freebore. I do love the WSM lines however. Definatly not too overpowering but i have had such luck reloading for them. Its hard to get them to shoot bad.

Get it. It is a great gun. I love mine and my hunting partner purchased one last week. I don't shoot game at this range but I had no problem putting 3 shots on a 8 inch pie plate at 600 yards. Also did a number on a pumpkin at that range. You won't be disappointed. It does have a few drawbacks like any gun.
1. I hope you reload, ammo can be expensive. Cabelas has 100 brass for 180 bucks. To purchase ammo cost approx $4 per round. I have crunched the numbers and can reload for about $2.10- $2.20.
2. I reccomend using the muzzle brake with ear protection at the range and in the field. It reduces recoil to the kick of a .243. I use QB2's for hearing protection. They cost about 8 bucks and are easy to use. I use these when I fire any rifle. http://store.angelexscience.com/holeqb2heba.html
3. It is a very accurate gun. Don't mess with the 180 gr bullets. Get up to the 225gr or 220gr. This is where it outshines the other 300's. It has the powder capacity to push that big bullet at great speeds and distances.
I own one and have no remorse. I am not looking to overkill an animal or shoot at ranges I have no business shooting at. I just like the gun. Someday I will be a good enough shot to shoot at 500 yards who knows, hopefully I won't need to.
Just my experience owning one and hope it helps.

The averagelife expectancy of a 30-378 barrel is around 1000 rounds if you are careful not to overheat the barrel.Be advised that the barrel will heat up very quickly.
