RE: remmington model 710
I had one of the 710s in 270. I hated it! The bolt would come out in my hand when I cycled it and the bluing was rubbing off the barrel. It's one redeeming quality was that it was a tack driver. I sold it to somebody who didn't know any better, and put the money towards a scope for the Ruger M77 MkII 300WM that I replaced it with. I'm much happier with the Ruger! It cost me a lot more than the 710 did, but I got something that looks awesome, won't fall apart on me in the field, and will hopefully will shoot as good or better than the 710 did.
If you're only going to take a couple shots from the bench to check zero and maybe take one or two shots at a deer, then the 710 will probably fit the bill for you. If you're going to put a lot of rounds down the barrel, spend a little extra and get something better.

RE: remmington model 710
Ya know, I posted on this earlier and said for the cash, I might consider a 710 in the 7mm Mag in the future. I think the thing to do is to wait for a sale on something else and if ya cant, then this might be a consideration. I say this becuase I saw a wood stock savage for 299 (on sale). It wasnt in the 7mm Mag I would have liked, but still, the 710 are going for 349 with scope (around here) and you could buy this savage and a 50 dollar scope for about the same. I would probably go for the savage first. I have played with a bunch of 710's and havent noticed the bolt coming out. It must happen with use. EJ

I have fired two 710's,both in 30-06.Accuracy was around 1-1/2" which is good enough for some people. On the other hand the actions on both were very rough and felt as if they were full of grit. There is no way that I would have been able to cycle either rapidly without taking them off my shoulder if a fast follow up shot was required.I would look at other choices if I needed a low priced rifle.

I have bought 2 of the new Steven 200's, one 25-06 and one 7mm-08. $262 out the door of my dealer. Excellent rifles, good synthetic stock, fore end free floated, trigger adjustable for pull weight......for the money, they cannot be beat. Very accurate![8D]

This is why we decided to purchase a new Remington 700 SPS Stainless 30-06
Rifle was $469.00 from Sportsman's Warehouse in Utah and included a [24" stainless / parkerized barrel and Limbsaver Recoil Pad.
FYI:
The blued version was discounted to $398.00, but we liked the stainless at $469. (Note: The 2005 Stainless version retails for $613 and has replaced the 2004 BDL's Stainless. The 2005 SPS in blue ($520 retail) has replaced the 2004 ADL line which was dropped.)
We Piller Bedding the action / Free Floating the Barrel, and Adjusted the Trigger to 2 3/4 lbs. So far, results have been 7/8" MOA with the rifle only having 12 shots through the barrel. Should be a MOA shooter after the barrel's broken in.

RE: remmington model 710
The 710 debate will go on and on...... I have one and dropped everything that I ever shot. Patterns get a little sloppy at the range if the gun gets hot but for one shot in the woods it did alright. Took a "slight" step up last year and got a stainless A-bolt stalker. Needless to say the 710 will take a permanent back up role but like my dad says a good rifle is one that puts the animal on the ground! Happy huntin fellas!!
