Default RE: using sling when shooting

Moving from the bench to offhand will change the poi. I personally like a 1" leather or nylon strap sling and when shooting offhand I occasionally short sling it and feel that it steadies up the aim considerably. Just takes some getting used to doing it properly.

Default Shooting with a sling

My great uncle had a rubber sling that would hold a rifle up in the shooting position, it worked so great he could take both hands off the gun and it wouldn’t move. Does anyone know what kind of sling this is called.

When installed correctly the old military style sling is ideal for shooting off hand, kneeling or sitting. Rather than trying to explain it, do a search on the net which will show the proper installation and use of it.
In my over 50 years of hunting I've only used my sling once to help steady my rifle. All the other times the animal was close enough that it wasn't necessary, I was either sitting or kneeling, or I had time to use a tree, back pack or some other form of rest.

Default Shooting with a sling

I’ve never used a sling while hunting but something like that would be nice for competition shooting.
