RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Well guy's! it's me again ,I just got back from hunting .Today it was raining hard most of the day, and I never thought that I was even going to get out. Late this afternoon the rain subsided to a light drizzle, and some of my best hunting has been in this type of weather .Anyway's hunting I went. As I got to the property I'm hunting the owner's son decided to come with me .So we set up a game plan and away we went. As I got up into my treestand the sun was trying to come out ,so I figured this would be good since it's been raining all day, the deer will likely want to get out to feed .I climbed up in my tree and thought this was going to be a good night ,then the wind picked up.I hate the wind ,you can't hear and deer hate it as well because it nulifies thier defences against preditor's and hunters ,I was sitting in my tree and at times I thought I heard something but nothing appear's, That darn wind . After a couple hour's I get a cramp in my leg ,I go to stand up in my stand and as I turn toward the tree a chipmunk was staring me right in the face ,I almost fell out of my stand this chipmunk scared the crap right out of me ,but I guess I scared the crap out of him as well because he never touched the tree on his way down till he hit the ground. As it turned out the wind never stopped until I got back to my truck .I never seen a deer tonight, this is a first in this bush. I'm not surprised! the weather just didn't co operate today ,so hopefully tommorrow will be better . I guess I forgt to say that I spent an hour in the bush this morning setting up my scent and hanging my cloth's in the evaporator shed and spraying it with scent away all for not .Better day's ahead I'm sure .

RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Hey nubo----seems like we are having the same problem with the weather, just not cooperating.Either its very windy, raining or both and the weather is seasonably warm.It will get better im sure-GOOD LUCK
P.S------did ya get my e-mail? |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Extreme1 !
Unless you just sent it I haven't got it yet, i thought maybe you were a ticked at me or something .As for the weather it seem's to have followed me home from the moose hunt .I'll try again tommorrow night . I'm gonna put my impact Archery cosmic sight back on for tommorrow ,My Spott Hogg isn't doing the job in the low light condition's ,maybe next season I'll get a light for it. nubo |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
A little ticked at ya-a bit,im not getting any moose steaks this year;)
Naw----I sent it yesterday morning-about a page and a half. Please dont make me type it all over again[:o] |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Jason!
No seriously I never recieved it unless someone deleted it but the kid's don't go into the mail ,so I'm not sure where you sent it .check your sent box and maybe it's there and you can send it again without re writing it LOL. Sorry about the Steak's but I do have some moose left from last season. I guess that's no good either because they're not fresh LOL. nubo |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Well guy's ,I just got back from hunting this morning .I was on stand by 6:15am everything was great when I arrived the wind was right and blowing in the perfect direction ,I heard something moving in the bush's about 6:45 but it was still too dark to see anything ,then it started to rain hard .I was hoping that it would be a brief rain but no such luck ,it then changed to sleet and then rain again .Within a couple of hour's my hand's were soaked so I changed my gloves, but it didn't take long for those gloves to get wet as well.I sat till 10:00am ,as long as I could take the dampness ,my intention's were to wait till 12:00pm but I couldn't take it any more .As it turned out I got out of my stand and went for a short walk, just to find that a nice sized buck had crossed the muddy road behind my treestand sometime in the night. The track is a good size, but I'm not sure that he's the buck that I've been chasing or not .I won't get out again till Wed night ,so maybe leaving this area alone for awhile will
do it some good, and maybe the weather will get a little better hopefully. I don't mind the cold ,but this rain and sleet just make's it hard to stay in stand long.So Wed night it is and maybe I'll see something . nubo |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Nubo
Well my opening day in WV was not as good as I'd hoped. I saw 2 does in the morning, but they never came closer than 60 yds. Then in the evening I watched a doe & fawn, along with two small bucks feed about 80-100yds away for 2 hours. They stayed in a 20 yd circle the whole time, just feeding back and forth. Then about 45mins before dark, the two bucks decided they'd had enough of each other and began to spar. I watched them spar for about 15mins until they pushed themselves over the ridge. I was hunting on the ground in the evening, and about 15 mins before dark I had a BIG raccoon come walking right up to me. He got within 6 feet of me. LOL, he never saw me sitting there. The weather was crazy though. About 2pm a cold front came through and wind, rain, big temp drop...it got nasty. But hey, it was still better than work :D Mabye next time!!! |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Still no luck!!!
Havent seen any of the buck from my stealth cam except the one that I missed on a severe downward angle. ( Im still kicking myself in the butt over that one) I havent even seen any doe in the last four outings. The weather has been terrible though. Saturday I sat in the afternoon pouring rain and decided to call my wife on the cell phone to check the radar loop on the weather channel. She said it was all green with rain and no breaks for quite a distance to the west. I decided to pack it in early and when I came home the rain was letting up. I checked the radar and noticed the fringe of clearing was almost upon us. In the next half hour the sun was peeking out and the winds died down. Man was I mad! I still had about an hour of daylight and simply could not make it back to my stand in time. I guess she was fed up with all the hours that I had left her alone with our 5 year old and wanted me home, although she still swears that the radar loop she saw was indeed what she said it was. Have time to get out tomorrow pm but they are calling for an inch of rain. I will have to see what happens.... |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
MR D!
The weathers been terrible here as well my last 2 outing's I haven't seen a thing as well.Thois isn't normal I usually see something even if it's out of range. The forcast here for the next few day's is calling for rain ,but I won't get out till Wed and maybe Thurs but if the weather doesn't co operate then I'll wait till Mon and Tues .I know that the buck I've been chasing is still in the area since I seen him last week, and there was sign of a good buck on the road crossing into his favourite hiding spot,so I presume it's the buck that I've been chasing .I need for him just to make one mistake and he's on the wall. I obviously didn't scare him too bad if he's still hanging out in the same area . I just know he's gonna slip up sooner or later . nubo |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
nubo,
Good luck on getting that buck! The only problem I see is that big bucks seldom make mistakes!!! Unless of course you can get him during full rut when his nostrils are full of doe and his guard will be down. Its funny how that split tail can be the demise of males of any species.:D |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Well, Needless to say the little hunting trip was cut severly short due to the weather and the new property we were supposed to be hunting. We made it up north around noon on Friday. We (my brother in-law and I) were suppose to be hunting 40 acres our friend had set up for us. However, when Dennis (brother in-law) and I go to the property to put up stands, we couldn't help but notice how many stands were already on the property. We knew someone else had to be hunting the same property. So as soon as our friend got home from work at 1pm, we ran over to the property owners house (an elderly couple owns the property). We asked the gentlemen if anyone else was suppose to be hunting the property. He said no but just to make sure he called his wife at work. It turns out his wife gave permission to a couple people she works with - New 40 acres...down the drain. So all we had left to hunt was the 30 acres our friend's dad owns behind his house. This actually is the same area we hunted last year and did fairly well. However, Dan (our friend) told us he's been out there five times this year and hadn't seen anything. He said the people that own the property right behind his dad leased it out this year to a couple of guys. Ever since those guys have been around, Dan and his brother havn't seen any deer.
So, needless to say we hunted there Friday night and Saturday morning. I can't explain how hard it rained Friday night - the entire four hours I was in my stand. The wind was blowing about 20 to 30 mph constantly. Rain, snow, and sleet smacking me in the side of the face. All I saw was a little button buck. Saturday morning same weather but still hunted - saw nothing. Saturday afternoon I looked at Dennis and said lets go home. I went out Sunday morning at home and didn't see anything. This morning, I watched two little bucks walk right by me. I couldn't help but with them with my grunt and Can. I highly enjoyed watching their confusion. NUBO - I will put something together for your scrapbook by the end of the week. Sorry it's taking so long... |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Well guy's another unsuccessful day in the field ,I hunted from 9:00am till 12:00pm but seen nothing ,but I did hear a buck doing some rubbing in the bush's behind me .Today i got my film developed from my Stealth cam that I took this summer ,This buck I've been chasing for 3 season's now he's got a decent rackand he's got large in body weight ,I'll post a pic also of his shed's that we found this spring .Can anyone tell me what they think he'll score?Do you think he's the same buck?I'm also not exactly sure he's the same buck ,but this pic was taken in the summer so his rack might not be fully developed, plus he's in velvet.
nubo ![]() ![]() Good luck and let me know what you think. |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
It's hard to tell if it's the same buck since the antlers aren't completely developed in the picture. I would say there's a good chance it might be. Second, if it is the same buck as the shed's in the corner, I would say the sheds in the corner would score right around 115 - 120 (especially since the right antler is missing a few points). However, if those points are there this year and it's one year later, he has the potentional of being a 130 to 135 class buck. I don't know when the pic up above was taken but those are my best guesses.
I'm going out tonight - it's time to take a doe. I also talked to the amish guy who hunts next door and he said he saw one of the monster's I've been seeing on Monday evening in the field on my property. What I would do to get a shot at either one of them. Good luck to everyone else...by the way where is everyone??? |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
I'm not sure Jeff ,I guess they're all busy .But I'm sure we'll hear from them on the weekend.I'm going out this evening hopefully this guy comes out for a walk and i can get a better look at him .good luck this evening Jeff.

RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
This is driving me nut's,I got to work all weekend from 7:30pm till 7:30 am .I also know that the owner's son of the land I hunt will be out chasing my buck while I'm at work . I'm gonna go crazy thinking about this . I guess the good part is as long as he doesn't phone then by Mon and Tues I'll be in there .That good

RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Hey guys
I just got out of a 3 day training class for my new job, so this is the first I've been online since Wed. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it back out until next Sat :( Maybe someone will score and get us some more points! Nubo, thats a nice buck in that pic...hard to tell if it is the same deer, though it looks somewhat similar. I hope you get him, he's a nice one. Things should start getting good from here on out I would think. Maybe a few big boys will slip up!:D Good luck guys! |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Well guys. Chalk up a second buck for our team. He "ain't" a biggun' but he should add some points to our total. I officially entered him in the scoring/tally thread.

RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Way to go Frank. You added up a second buck for your team and the total is added to the official thread. Congratulations to you and a fine picture to boot. I look forward to the story......

RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Congratulation's Frank he'll do just fine ,it's nice to add another to the score card . We're catching up with the other's .Please take a moment and right a short story with time and date of harvest and please send that to me .
Thank's Frank for breaking the drought ,hopefully this evening I'll add afew more inch's to our score. nubo |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
That a baby Frank...
He will definitely add some points to our total. I can't wait to hear the story. Once again, Congrats. He's one fine animal. |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Great looking deer frank. I'm sorry I havent been on in a while. I've been quite busy at work lately. I've been hunting at least once a week since the season opened but all I have seen are fawn's (I call em' fawns but they don't have spots any longer just not mature) and does. Lots of em'. I had 6 come out last Friday about 150 yards away in a field. I'm going this Friday and will of course narrow the distance from where they came out. I love this part of hunting when you can pattern the deer and then stalk them on the ground. No buck's yet. But the rut hasn't realy started down here it's still quite warm during the days. I'm figuring another week to two weeks till the rut starts.
Ohhhh BTW found out last week that my wife is pregnant. Due June 7th. I'm very excited about having another fawn of my own. Chuck. |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Chuck !
Congratulation's on the new addition to the family in the near future , we're glad to hear you'll be having company in the bush with you down the road. Well at least your seeing deer ,the last few times I've been out I haven't seen a thing and it starting to get to me . nubo |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Way to go Frank all I am seeing are a few small does but I hope that will cahnge soon.
|
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Congrats Frank!!! Way to go! :D Thats a nice size buck...and great pic too!
And Congrats to you to Chuck!!! Thats awesome:D Nothing like having a little hunting partner. My oldest will be 7 in 2 weeks, and he is just about ready to hunt. I think by next season he will be ready to be the one behind the weapon. I've taken him out with me the last 3 years, and he's really learned to enjoy it. He's always asking me when it's his turn to go. IMO, nothing is better to me than taking a kid out. GO TEAM 11!!! Keep up the good work guys! |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Royak (forgive me I'm bad with names I didn't call you by first name),
;)Don't be discouraged. Having those doe's around is great. Once rut starts they will draw in the bucks were looking for. I'm hoping to harvest one of the two does that I saw Friday. But I definantly wont hunt both. One hot doe can bring in a ton of bucks. Thanks for the congrats. :D I can't wait til December we get to find out if its a boy or girl. I have a lil boy right now who is 1 1/2 and he's a pistol just like his ol' man. So I'm kina hoping for a lil girl. But I truly don't care as long as it's healthy. |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Chuck...
Congratulations on the great news. I have two little girls: one is 3y/o and the other is 6 mths. MaKenzi, my 3y/o, loves to watch hunting on TV with dad and has been begging me to take her. So, last Tuesday I took her with me. We sat in the pop-up at the edge of the field (I was just hoping to see some deer). We got all set up about an hour and a half before dark - didn't want to go too early because I knew an hour and a half was pushing her patience. We weren't set up for 30 mins when I heard somthing coming from behind us and very close. We leaned forward (with her sitting on my lap) just to catch three turkeys step out about 10 yards the left of us. I can't even begin to tell you the smile and joy on MaKenzi's face when she saw those turkeys. It lasted about 5 seconds and then she turned to me and said "Shoot him dad, shoot him....Are you gonna shoot him". I told her no because I couldn't - I didn't purchase an over-the-counter license for the fall (I'm kickin myself in the _ss for not, now). About 20 mins before dark two does came running out of the woods being chased by pretty good size buck. I thought MaKenzi was going to jump out of the blind. The closest the does came was about 50 yards. The buck made it within 40 yards (which I will shoot up to) but he wouldn't stop running. He was rampin those does from the minute they got into the field until dark. So we sat there and watched. MaKenzi couldn't figure out why I was shooting them. She didn't understand the concept that they were too far away. All said and done, I had a blast and to see her smile when she saw the animals was gift from god. I can't wait to take her again...I promised her during gun season, I would take her once. What an experience and to think this is only the begining. |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Oh yeh, one more thing...The RUT IS IN FULL SWING HERE IN SW MICHIGAN - bucks are rampin it up!!! It's almost 3 weeks ahead of last years.
|
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
The rut hasn't come into full swing yet here in Ontario ,the weather still suck's and is calling to be upwords' of 10 by Saturday ,I'm thinking that the rut won't happen here for at least 2 week's . I was out the other night with a couple of friend's who swore we would see deer ,but guess what ,we never seen a thing .I'm going out this evening again hopefully thing's change because i'm starting to get depressed.LOL

RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
NUBO,
I don't know. I was thinking the same thing around here. The temps were around 70 degrees and we havn't had a frost in over 3 weeks and I wasn't seeing the pre-rut activity that I normally do. But all of a sudden within the last couple days it has gotten pretty hot and heavy. Hopefully the weather will cool down for ya. I know it's suppose to by the begining of next week around here. Good Luck. JEFF |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Jeff!
I sure hope the weather changes soon.I was going to go out this morning but we had Thunder and lightning so I just went back to bed. We went out last night and one of the guy's shot at a small buck right near dark ,he was sure he hit him because of the noise the arrow made ,but didn't see the arrow .we looked for 2 1/2 hrs but found nothing ,no arrow and no blood and no deer .I have a bad feeling that he's not going to find this deer ,because the area is very ,very thiick and now that it's rained ,I sure have my doubt's ,I wasn't able to go with him since the kid's had hockey this morning But he had Tom and another guy to help.He was going to call when he got home ,but as of yet he hasn't called .I'll let you know what the result's are when I speak with him ,but i doubt it's going to be good. John |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Hi guy's !
Just a short note to tell you's that I was hunting on the rifle hunt this week and we got 5 deer for 5 hunter's.We still have tommorrow to hunt but our tag's are full and I think I'll sleep in tommorrow. We did get some nice buck's and 1 is in the 130 to 140 class .Although we did see a buck I'm sure would be in the 160class ,I'll be bowhunting next week for this buck ,so I'm glad we never got him. We had a great time and the week started out slow with only 1 deer hanging until Wed when we got 2 more and then this morning we filled the rest of our tag's .This was just in time because it started raining hard and it's not supposed to stop till next week. The big buck was in rut' but the other buck's were not .We got 4 buck's and 1 doe . nubo |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Way to go Nubo I am still not having any luck at all but I will not give up.
|
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Good job Nubo!
My season has pretty much stunk so far. I've only gotten out a couple times in the last 3 weeks, and haven't had any luck. Today is our last day of 'archery only' season before the muzzleloaders hit the woods tomorrow. I'm heading out this evening, hopefully it will be good. Things are normally pretty hot this time of year here as far as rutting action, but today the wind is blowing 30-40mph[:@]so we'll see. Anyhow, good luck guys! Hopefully someone can add some inches to our total! |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Guy's !
Now that the rifle season is over I'll be out again next week to try and add some inch's to our scorecard .I"ve got 3 week's until the controled hunt here in Ont and then I'll have till the end of Dec ,so I still have lot's of time to go .As I said the rut is just starting to come on so hopefully I can get the job done . Keep at it guy's and don't give up ,I've alway's found that if you don't give up good thing's will happen ,so good luck to you's. nubo |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Ok guys I have to get another pic tomm. with my bow in one but here is my entry. I just want you all to know I traveled 1100 miles on a trip to Wisconsin in Nicolet National Forest to try and get a nice one for our team and came up empty, turns out I had a nice one waitin' for me right in my own back yard.
Story: I was determined to go hunting in the morning, was gonna be the coolest morning yet and prerut has started so I figured ok. Set my alarm, my coffee and was ready. Well, after tossin' and turnin all night I reached over shut the alarm off and said the heck with it im not getting up. Well something woke me up 4 more times and the last time was at 5:30am so I said well maybe I better go after all! So I rushed out and jumped in my wifes ladder stand which I had placed right in the middle of our "Rut Alley" right as first light was upon me. At 6:30 laid out some grunts.. nothin', 7 rattled and grunted...nothin' 7:30 saw 3 deer working parallel from me at 80 yards so I laid out a grunt and one turned and came a comin' straight at me. Being only 12 feet up with the sun in my face I never thought the deer would let me get the bow back so I drew slowly, he turned at 22 yards, I bleated to stop, he didnt so I gave it to him louder he stopped, I dropped the bead on him and let it go. I saw the arrow dissappear behind the shoulder and watched him go but over and ball up 50 yards out. End result, this baby right here!!! I havent scored him yet but he should be pretty good. What should I do once I have the pic with my bow in it and the score? Please inform so I make sure it counts for our team. Later. Go 11 ' " ![]() |
RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread
Steve you'll need to send a pic and short story to Rob/PA Bowyer and myself ,please be sure to add your bow in the pic this is very important .I"m putting a scrap book together for after the season and will send it to all of the team .And you'll need to rough score him as well ,please add date and time of harvest for my scrap book.
I notice he's got an odd looking brow tine and a small little drop tine as well great job Steve . I guess your glad you got out of bed now,HUH? John [email protected] Rob Bowyer Wow! he's absolutely a great looking buck and will definetly put our team in the running with the top team's ,congrat's Steve. We're definetly no underdog's now with this great buck.I will be e-mailing the other team member's to let them all know of your harvest. Nubo John |
