Trock!

He look's absolutely great ,your taxi dine a wonderful job on him .
The shot gun only hunt is on this week and I'm not partisipating since I don't believe in hunting deer with a shotgun,I'm not saying that I haven't hunted them with a shotgun ,but I'll never shotgun hunt them again .About 9 year's have past since I have shotgun hunted deer ,and I seen so many wounded deer that it appalled me ,I heard all kind's of stories from other's as well to wounding deer and not finding them. This turned me off of the shotgun hunt and I'll never do it again .There were and are so many of these type 's of hunter's that never seemed bothered that they wounded deer and never found them .I know I've heard this argument about bowhunter's as well ,but knowing more about the sport now ,it doesn't compare to the shotgun hunter's here . I don't mean to knock anyone about thier choice of hunting firearm's but this was the experience that I witnessed in my area. Most of these deer were shot with 00 buck or 000buck.

NUBO...I absolutely respect where you're coming from but I also want to point out to you that most of those deer were shot with buckshot; just like you said. That's my point. Here in Michigan in the Southern Zone our firearm season is shotgun as well. In my 12 years of shotgun hunting I have to say that I have seen few deer that have been shot by a SLUG and still walking around. Now buckshot...That's an etirely different story. Here's my theory...I believe in all shotgun zones/hunts, hunters should have to use slugs - no buckshot allowed.

nubo 12-02-2004 06:40 AM

RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread

I agree Jeff,at least if you shoot at a deer with the slug it's usually a clean miss ,or he's going to get hit hard.Maybe I should should rephrase my thought's from being "shotgun hunters" to using "buck shot" instead. I thought I might hear a few word's about this statement ,and should have thought it out a little more before I made that statement . I still have no more interest in the shotgun for deer because what I never stated, is that it usually come's the first week in Dec and we also have about 2 feet of snow as well ,and I'm against having to wade around in that deep snow as well LOL.

Steve!

Now that you mention that ,I do remember you mentioning it before ,so what I said about your taxi doing a great job, will be even better compliment.LOL

I will be back out next monday I'm hoping .I badly bruised my hand this week at work and am unable to draw on my bow, but I'm hoping it will be better for next week .Today I got some even better new's ,that the company that I work for is giving us the week before Christmas as well as the week of Christmas off this season ,so I'll be able to get out just about every day in the last 2 week's of bow season here in Ont . This will work out perfect since my wife work's as a teacher's assistant and will be off when the kid's get off for the holiday's .
Great new's Eh?

Hey that is great news I sure hope you get a chance at a nice one. So far this has been my worst season in over 10 years I havent even saw a buck and very few does. Gun season is in here now goes out tomorrow then a week of doe with a gun then a week of muzzleloader. If there are any deer left I will be very surprised. And I am not the only one that is having this same luck. By far one of the sorriest seasons in many many years but I will not give up until Dec 31st.

I had planned on hunting yesterday, but I came down with the flu and ended up in bed for the day.But today I'm feeling pretty good and plan on getting out this afternoon,we've had freezing rain last night and the forecast is for rain this afternoon ,but I'm not gonna let that stop me ,I'm going out anyway's unless it's a steady downpour.

Guy's !

This morning I was planning on working ,but never got the call ,so since i was up I decided to go hunting .It was snowing pretty good and I figured I would probably be wasting my time but I'll go anyway's .I walked into my treestand at 7:00am and it was still dark out .I wasn't in my stand 10 minute's and I see a dark object crossing the field toward's me ,at that point I wasn't able to tell whether it was a buck or a doe ,I lost sight of it and figured it went into the bush I was in down the road where I couldn';t see it.It was just breaking daylight anyway's so I wasn't sure whether I'd be able to get a shot at it anyway's ,so it was just as well. After about 20 minute's had passed I noticed something moving in the bush about 50yrds up wind from me and since the snow was laying on the tree's it was pretty obvious that it was a deer ,but at this distance I still wasn't able to determine whether it wa a buck or doe yet.It was coming right to me and as it closened the distance I realized that it was a buck ,and he was a good one worth taking for the team.If I had to take a guess I'd have to say he would probably go 120 + maybe better .As he approached the 30yrd mark he stopped behind a tree and that's when I decided to come to full draw ,I'm sure he heard me because he put his nose in the air and started to smell and he continuously looked around .Once he figured he was safe he started to wander a little closer but I was still unable to get a shot at him for all of the young growth he stood behind .I held and held and could tell if he was to turn a bit to his right I would have a clean shot and he would only be 20yrds away broadside ,Perfect eh? but oh no he has to go to his left and stay behind the brush pile till he was safe and getting out of distance that i was unable to get a clean shot .At one point i thought of trying to drive an arrow through a very small opening and hitting him high behind the shoulder ,but thought that that would be irresponsible to try to take a shot that gave me a very low percentage for success. He hung around for a few minute's but never gave me another shot .I had my finger's crossed but I guess that's how thing's go .I'll be back out tonight to see if maybe he'll come back the same direction that he went and maybe this time I'll be able to make it count. Sorry guy's but I'm really trying to get some inch's added to our score .
I'll let you's all know how thing's go tonight .

Well guy's I've just gotten home from my evening hunt ,I presume the deer are bedding expecting bad weather ,which has been called for for our area. Not one fresh track since I left this morning .When I got into my stand I sat for about 20 minute's before doing some doe bleet's ,after bleeting I heard what I thought was a buck grunt I waited for awhile and I heard it again ,again and again .I was thinking that it might be a tree creeking from the wind but this was going on and on whether the wind was blowing or not ,I listened to this for 2 hour's while in stand .I still don't know what the sound was coming from ,it wasn't continuous because it would stop and after awhile it would start up again, all i can say was it was the wierdest thing I've ever heard in all the year's that I've been hunting.I thought that maybe this was a bedded buck trying to get the doe to come to her ,the other thing was the sound was moving back and forth on the ridge above me from one side to the other . Do you guy's have any idea's what this might have been ,it sounded just like buck grunt's but some were very short and some were longer like a normal grunt .Could this have been a bedded buck or was my imagination working overtime ?
Other than that ,I never got a sniff ,notta notta thing moving anywhere tonight.Maybe tommorrow morning will be better.

Well guys, I had to take a few days off from deer hunting. A little medical problem. It seems as if I have had a Transition ischemic attack. Which means a tiny 20 second stroke. All is good though. I am taking blood thinners now and I can go hunting. They say I have a tiny hole in my heart which can be repaired through a heart catherization with a special plug. If all goes well and I see no reason it should not then I will be back to normal and not having to take blood thinners for the rest of my life. I will try to see if I can add some inches to our score. The rut is just about to start here. Guys enjoy your hunts.

Greg!

Sorry to hear you've had to miss out on hunting espeacially when the season seem's so short to strt with .I hope thing's are O.K. with you and your able to get out in your shortened season . Your health is more important than hunting so you take care of yourself and hopefully you'll get a bit of hunting done with what remain's of the season. I've had some great outing's this season but have only connected on the rifle hunt so far ,I've had some close call's with the bow but have yet to connect ,We've gotten quite a bit of snow over the last 24 hour's with blizzard like condition's here today .I'm done work on the 19th of this month so I'll have 2 week's left to get the job done .Anyway's take care of yourself and be sure that your feeling well before you venture out into the bush .We need the inch's but not at the expense of a team member's health .

Greg,

Sorry to hear about that. Hopefully everything works out for the best.

NUBO,
You're an experienced hunter and there aren't too many things in the woods that sound like a grunt. You did say that some of them were really short right...well, I don't know if you've ever heard a buck trying to breed a doe but it is a similar sound to a grunt but usually shorter. It sounds more like a short clicking sound. But, more than likely if you thought it was a grunt, it probably was. He may have just had a hot doe (2nd estorus) almost in a standing heat. At that point a doe will not move a whole lot but more back and forth across a small area. I have only seen this twice but I tell you what, it sure is amazing.

Good Luck to everyone!

RE: Official Team "The Shafts" (11) Thread

Jeff!

I'm pretty darn sure that's exactly what it was then ,I've never heard this before but I was pretty sure it was a buck grunting .I had a buck come into that area in the morning ,but this went on for a longtime ,I listened to it continuously for over an hour and I tried to listen hard thinking it was a tree making noise from the wind ,but even when the wind dropped the noise continued .the only thing was that it went on for so long is the reason I didn't think that it was a deer ,but the more I listened it had to be ,it's the only thing that it could have been .I've never heard anything like this before .Today is the last day for the bowhunt in the usual area that I hunt ,so I'll be out tonight for the last kick at the can. After this I'll have to hunt a different area that's close to me ,but I only have a couple place's to hunt there ,but there is lot's of crowned land that I can hunt .

Nubo, I think I will pass, but it might be the best time to get a big one if you can stand the cold yourself. But the work will really begin if you do get the big one. Not having much luck here, all I have been seeing are small bucks spikes and four points which are not legal at the management area unless they have a 12 inch spread. But I am beginning to find more sign now so it won't be long before the chase is on. My the the wind be in your face and the buck of your dreams be at your will.

Happy New Year guys!
Well my season is done also. I tried to the end, but never even saw a buck during the last month. It was fun though and I got some meat for the freezer. This year was really rough for me overall. This bums me out because for the last 5 years, I've spent tim on this board almost every day.

Hey guys. Sorry I couldnt help the team out this is the first year in over 10 that I havent at least gotten one buck with my bow but I never even saw one this year. Plenty of sign and I hunted a lot probably the most time in a stand in a long time. But that is what hunting is all about I guess. I still enjoyed myself some great days in the stand. My season is over until October I am also sorry I havent contributed more to the board in the way of posts. As all have stated if you are ever in this neck of the woods let me know we will get together and hunt if season is in and if not I will treat you to lunch or dinner.
As we all know it really isnt about scoring it is about doing what we love to do. I well remember the years long ago when I was lucky to even get a shot within 30 yards once a year and now I have gotten used to passing up many many shots a year. I loved that being able to just watch the does feed under me and around my stand I learned a lot from that. Nubo man you are the greatest you kept this buch together and posted when we was too lazy to do it. So from me a big thumbs up to ya guy. Who knows next year some of us will be on the same team.

That's what it's all about being friends and hunting together and that's just what we done this season ,although we didn't actually see each other we still hunted together. We did have a successful season regardless, and we finished near the top, and not near the bottom . So we have no reason to be upset at ourselve's or other's, because we are one of the best team's in the contest this season to sling the arrow's true.I wasn't able to add any inch's as well, but that's how it goes. I'm very proud of all of the guy's who hunted on the shaft's this season whether we got deer or not.Congratulation's goes out to you's all who participated this season, and just maybe some of us will find that we just possibly might get a chance to hunt together next season. I'm looking to go on a deerhunt {bowhunt] with Extreme1 off of the ILNYPAKY-EH Team, this coming fall,I think the plan is go to the Northern part of Ont after some huge Whitetail's We're starting to make some plan's but we haven't made any concrete plan as of yet. We'd like to do this a cheaply as possible and we're both looking very forward to getting together and meeting each other for the first time .
Anyway's I'm still lurking in the background, so post whenever you can ,I'm not sure if any of us are still hunting or not ,but if any are still getting into the wood's let us know.
I have all your e-mail addy's, so if I'm going to be in your neck of the wood's I'll be sure to contact you's. There's a good chance I'll be taking you's up on a deer hunt in the future. So please keep in touch me whenever you's feel like it. Send me a line just to let me know your still alive and i'll return it as soon as I recieve it .
