RE: Official "Lung Busters" (5) Thread
I think maybe you should get a shot of you standing behind the deer, you know, just in case you might need it!! Okay Dad, now the heat is on you. Seriously, thanks !!! Tyler is still on cloud 9 but did make the comment he is missing not being able to hunt anymore this year. I think he is hooked!! He will still go out with me when I hunt though. We scored the buck tonight. It went 123 1/8 gross. Very even buck and should net around 120. I haven't done the math yet on that. This isn't the big 8 pt. He is in a different area and will go in the 140s. That area will be better to hunt once some pressure is put on the deer from duck hunters tromping/driving all over or towards rut . He will be a tough one to hunt as he likes to wander and covers a big area. He should get pushed enough to confine his area a bit. The good thing is there are also a couple other bucks just as good or better in that area also. I've got stands in place for that area. Hoping to get another good weekend of hunting in. Saw a dandy last night and he is in an area with 2 other bucks that are good ones too. No trees in the right spot for a stand so will be hunting at their level. Should be interesting. We put a lot of time into scouting this year. Hopefully our hard work will pay off for me as it did for Tyler. Tim |
RE: Official "Lung Busters" (5) Thread
Hey guys, I've been reading the thread about What the top Five teams will be at the end of the season, and thepoint has been made that the winning team will likely be the one where several hunters on the team just flat out shoot a buck, since the belief is that less than a third of us will actually score on a buck.
With that said, and I believe it is correct, what has everyone's success rate been on bucks the last 3 years? This is what I posted on the mentioned thread. I'm not bragging, because I'm not a great hunter, just lucky with my location. I've only been bow hunting here in Nebraska for the last two years and have shot 3 bucks. I'm not bragging, in fact it diminishes my success a little to say this, but where I hunt it is more a matter of when will I shoot a buck as opposed to 'if'. The buck to doe ratio is almost even, so calling and rattling works great. It's suburban, so they are accustomed to human scent and don't spook at it as readily. There are a lot (i've seen 4-6 this year) of decent (90"-100") eight pointers walking around with a smattering of 120 inchers thrown in for good measure. I guess there are some 140+ inchers out there, but I'm probably not a good enough hunter to either find them or get them close enough for a shot. I saw one last year that was that big, by my guess, but I set my stand in the wrong place and didn't clear a shooting lane to the path he traveled that day. I only saw him that once, in late October. |
RE: Official "Lung Busters" (5) Thread
If I don't kill a buck, it isn't because I couldn't, it is because I let them walk due to the fact I am hoping they will live to grow another year or two. That statement may sound rather conceited, I don't mean it to be. I guess what I am trying to say is that the past few years I have made time to spend a lot of hours in a treestand. I could afford to be picky. I am anticipating this year to be no different.
While I do agree that the overall success rate of the teams in general may not live up to everyone's expectations, I do think that a few of the teams will really excel. Hopefully our team will be one of them. If you look at how some of these teams stack up hunter wise, regardless of what is being said, I can't see 500 inches winning. Call me a right wing nut job, but my guess would be higher. I don't think it can be over emphasized that every branch antlered buck harvested will be a major contribution to our team. Those that have the time and area to be picky in what they shoot is simply a bonus for our team. Those that don't have that luxury should harvest the first branch antlered buck they have an opportunity to (provided it can be ethically done) and never feel the need to aplogize for whatever it scores. On the other hand, what do I know, my favorite color is plaid. [&:] |

Well, said, Antler Eater, and I liked your post on the top five teams thread as well. I would have to agree that 500 points may be too low, but I doubt any team exceeds 700 points.
As has already been said numerous times over the years by many hunters, those big bucks (and by big I'm including the 90"-100" bucks) seem to disappear quickly come opening day. I like all these trail cam pics of nice deer but a lot of them are at night, and those bucks aren't even being pressured yet, except for whatever scent is left from placing the cams. Throw into that mix the likelyhood that other hunters know about those deer and will be hunting them as well, I would bet that far less than 20% of these Trail Cam bucks will be entered into the contest. Either way, it's gonna be very fun watching this pan out. The best part of the contest is that team mates are talking to each other as friends and are interested in how each are doing, and we may have never done that before. -Brad |

Brad,
You are so right. I couldn't have said it better than how you just articulated the situation. :) |
RE: Official "Lung Busters" (5) Thread
Brad, don't forget kcison's 13pt in velvet- he had been scouting that buck for some time now and got on him opening morning, only to have his cousin shoot it instead. But then again, we already knew Team 4 was in the top 20% ;)

RE: Official "Lung Busters" (5) Thread
You're right, Hazcon, which proves the point. He knew about it, did everything right, and still had someone else shoot it out from under him. We also have a team member, TJF, who rightfully let his son take the 120" buck he had been watching, as every father would, I hope. However, TJF (Tim) has another big buck in the area that he's after, so we'll be OK. But really it wouldn't matter to me at all. I'm happy that Tyler got that deer.
Kcison has another bigger buck that he's been watching as well, and I wouldn't bet against him getting it, but he's the exception to the rule I believe. Of course, Rack Attack is likely going to punch another one too, but it might be hard to top last year's, but I wouldn't bet against him either. I believe, from what little I know of either of them, that they fall in Antler Eater's first catagory of 'Expert Hunters' that have time (they make the time to hunt), passion, knowledge, patience, and opportunity. I'm sure there are others that fall into that category as well that none of us even know about because they are a bit more 'quiet' on the boards. Like one of the moderators (Cougar Mag, I think) said in the 'Top Five' post, Idaho Hunter posted two really nice bucks last year, but no one is talking about him like they have Kcison and Rack Attack. I still think you guys are stacked, and if you and Buck Magnet come through with some of the deer you guys have been seeing, it'll be tough to catch you. I still think we'll have a surprise winner, though. No offense.;) |
RE: Official "Lung Busters" (5) Thread
Antler Eater, I noticed that you use G5's, or at least a relative does, and you sharpened them for him. Do you need anything special to sharpen them with or will just a flat stone work? I've heard that they are designed to be able to lay two edges flat on a stone and just push. Is this true or not? Thanks.

RE: Official "Lung Busters" (5) Thread
Team members, in a moment of bad judgment I posted a message to the boards that was meant to inflame by saying that I lost my release and didn't practice much, or at all, this year. I thought to make some points with it, but it terribly backfired. Deceit (lying) is not a good way to make any points. Only an idiot would have thought that he could.
Anyway, I tried to apologize but that doesn't seem like enough, and probably isn't, as I stepped too far over the line on message board etiquitte. Anyway, there is definitely, and rightfully so, animosity towards me and little if anything I say in the future will have any credibility, and our team (your team) has also been drug into it, with feelings of pity that you have me as a team mate. I deeply apologize for that. The post was inconsistent from any other posts I have made in the last 3 years, proving that a reputation takes a lifetime to build and only a second to destroy. So, with that in mind, and realizing that any buck I get will likely be met with skepticism and doubt, I would like to resign from the team and let you guys find someone with a better reputation and better judgment to replace me. I'm really sorry fellas, since I truly believe that I could have helped your cause with a decent buck this year. But you being able to enjoy your ultimate victory :D, without the mud slinging that would be part of my entry, is worth more than any buck I might shoot. Please, to any of my antagonists: I am not trying to be valiant, or have the last say, or elicit pity. I was wrong- dead wrong. I admit it. I just think this is best for the Lung busters- That's my only motive. |

...Now just hold on there one cotton pickin minute by23856! [&:]
I have been gone for a couple of days so I didn't get to read your original post, but I did get to read all of the responses up to this point. I didn't see anything in there that would qualify as "resigning" material. Perhaps your judgement didn't bring it's "A" game to town, but who hasn't been a little off from time to time. Besides, anybody that would believe that a hunter that consistantly visits this site, would have a friend sight in his bow for him so he could go hunting, has some serious gullibility issues (that was a classic, by the way. :D). I wouldn't worry about your credibility either. This is cyber space for Pete's sake. This environment is ripe for making all kinds of claims, there is no accountability. I'm sure even in our friendly forum there are claims made that never took place. :( But really, even that doesn't matter, in the long run it only hurts the person perpetrating the fallacy. Goodness, being that most of us don't know what the other person looks like, as long as you didn't post a picture of Mitch Rompola sitting beside his famous buck, a guy could cut and paste almost any picture you wanted for our contest and nobody would be the wiser. While we would hope this wouldn't happen, nothing would surprise me. I agree with Rob on this one, "call me skeptical." If your worried about people not believing it is you and your buck, shoot, we will take the animal and you down to a notary and take another picture and have that notarized. ;) No big deal. Soooo, back to my original purpose of this post. I can't speak for everyone, but I will say this, I would personally prefer it if you stayed as a lungbuster. Besides, I have seen how big those Nebraska bucks can get and your state is a "sleeper" state for sure. :) ....Okay, I'm glad we got that settled......You know you can't quit, right? Yepper, it is too late now, if you wanted to resign you had to do that before August 30th! Just read the fine print in your contract if you don't believe me ;).....So we're good to go, yes? (Don't even think of saying no!!). You are stuck with us there fella....you do know that don't you.... |
