RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
just trying to post the picture of the buck i was talking about in the beginning of this tread. hope it works. i am not computer illiterate i just cant seam to get this site down. lol lol anyway we put $25 in the pot every year for the biggest buck and have for the last 4 years. so far this kid has won 2 this one being the second and his dad has won 1. enough money in the pot to cover mount and a little extra. last year was around $450 or so. he missed this buck a few days before and moved his stand one afternoon when he was out of school on a snow day. it paid off to say the least. this buck is 13 points and has 26" and 27" main beams. inside spread of 23+ inches and he has some great tine length. us amateurs rough scored him in the 170's but we'll see once he has it scored officially at the deer and turkey expo Columbus Ohio. i'll let you know what the official score is and how close we were when we scored it.

RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
That is a serious buck!!! I can see that scoring in the 170's. A buck like that would sure be a nice addition to our team!!!

Well, I had another uneventful weekend, saw a few deer at fleeting glances moving throgh brush, and had 2 trot past me in near pitch dark before shooting light on sunday morning. my brother saw a few deer including a nice young 8 pointer, but definitly one we would shoot if we had the chance...

My season opens tomorrow, HOWEVER, I can not get off work to hunt!!!!!:(:( BUT come Saturday morning, you better believe that my hind end will be up a tree!!! Good Luck to everyone on our team.....I have a good feeling the bucks will feel the wrath of the BIG TEN!!!

Doughboy,
Good luck Sat!!!! I am heading out after work tonight for an evening hunt in the bedding area of the big typical 5x5 I am after... Good luck all! Shed |

Best of luck to everyone. I'm actually doing a filmed turkey hunt Saturday, but it's rack time after that.
Be Safe! |
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
Going down to southern Ohio Saturday morning to do a little scouting and hang a few stands. I just got permission to hunt this land that is next to Mead Paper if (Ohio hunters know the place I'm sure). The only problem is it is about an 1 1/2 hours from home. The guy I work with said no other hunters on his dads land and a lot of deer and several big bucks so I'll see what I can do to bag one for us this season.
|
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
We know that each of us will see the buck we want, and maybe have a shot at the buck we want. The most important part of the hunt is did you enjoy the hunt and did you learn something from it.
There's no way to score that! -David |
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
Well, here is my weekend....Saturday morning.....saw nothing....oh yea wait a minute....I did see something......A SQUIRREL HUNTER!!! he came within 60 yards of me!!! So needless to say I did not see anything that morning. Did not get to hunt again until last night. I saw 4 deer, all does. A doe and 2 yearlings came within 15 yards, and I could of shot the doe. I chose not to because she is still nursing them. If that situation comes up again in a couple of weeks...she is in trouble!!! It was awesome to get in the woods. My brother in law saw a nice 9 pt. (18-20 in spread), and did not shot him. He says he is looking for something a little bigger!!!!
|
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
well guys went out tonight. i have to say that it was the best bow hunting day i have ever had. now i didnt shoot a buck or even a doe but its still been the best bowhunting experience i have had yet. about 8 minutes before dark i saw a buck out in the hay field i hunt near. i am about 15 yards inside the woods. i grunted 4 times with no interest from the buck except a look around. just before it is too dark to shoot. he starts walking towards me. he is about 70 yards away. he stops 50 yards away and makes a ground scrape. then continues on to about 40 yards and makes another one out of view. he continues toward me taking his time. he finally gets into my shooting lane and is just standing there for about 5 minutes broadside looking around. i have already decided that it was too dark to shoot and did not want to take a chance of wounding him. so he literally walks to the left and to the front of my stand for a total of an hour. he takes a couple of craps about 6 yards away. never once new i was there. he also made a rub over a mock rub i had made 6 days before. he was an 8 pointer with about an 18inch spread i think. he walked around in front of my stand for an hour. the funniest thing is that i didnt even think about this contest once. in fact i didnt think about it until i logged onto the boards.
wish me luck !! |
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
Sounds like a nice way to spend the evening Shootem. I had an extremely slow weekend. Went turkey hunting on Saturday. Ended up being a nice long walk in the woods. Sunday climbed into my stand. Ended up being a nice long sit in the woods. Maybe this weekend will be better.

RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
Six bucks posted for six different teams. It's starting to heat up.
How has everyone on our team been doing? I was out last weekend and didn't see anything. It was windy and and had heavy rains the night before. I'm going out tomorrow afternoon till sunset. Maybe better luck then. I've got my vacation coming up in a week so then I'll be able to every waking moment in the field and in my stand. I can't believe I'm not still waiting for opening day. I love this time of year! |
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
I have yet to see a buck from the tree.[:'(][:'(] My brother in law has seen a couple, but that is it. It was pretty warm this weekend. I did not see anything Saturday morning. I took my 8 year old son with me on Saturday night, (his first deer hunt), so I did not expect to see anything then (we sat on the ground). I jumped 2 does on my way to the stand last night. Around 6:15pm I saw a deer approx. 60 yards from me, but could not tell what it was. Hopefully with colder temps on the way, the deer will move a little more.

RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
It was a rough one for me as well. I was in my stand for most of the day. It was youth firearm weekend so blaze orange for bowhunters as well. I just don't have that high confidence level when in blaze orange. I had the only dear I'd seen all day come within 35 yds when she just stared right at me. It took her less than a second to turn and be out of sight. I came down late in the afternoon and headed for the trail to lead me back to the truck. On my way out I tripped on a downed tree hidden in the brush and fell over into a nasty thorn bush. I still have about a dozen or so thorns stuck in my right hand, can't get 'em out. I got myself back on my feet and made the trail and a half hour walk to the truck. On my way driving home, near home after an hour and a half drive, I went to make sure I had turned off my handheld gps unit. I keep it in a "Buddy Lock" pouch on my pack. Or at least I used to. My pouch was gone. Not on my pack, not on my seat, not on floor, gone. My heart drops as I realize what was in my pouch. My gps of course, my gloves which I should of been wearing, my rattle bag, and oh yeah, all of this seasons tags. It all must still be hanging on the bush I fell into. What a way to end the day. Several hundreds of dollars in the hole.
Well, I've reordered the gps, bought 1 new set of either sex dear tags (getting the other ones replaced by the DNR but not in time for vacation) bought new gloves and a rattling bag. I'm heading out to (hopefully) the same spot on Monday to look for the lost items. If I had my gps I could be sure to locate the spot. How ironic! Lesson learned. No valubles in "Buddy Lock" pouches. As a matter of fact no Buddy Lock anything. Better luck to the rest of The Big Ten. I'm going back to plucking thorns. |
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
Man, that sucks. Sounds like you didn't have the greatest weekend, but hopefully you'll find your stuff the next time you go out.
Don't worry, you're not the only one having a bad year. I haven't even seen a buck while hunting yet. Not one. But I guess that's why they call it hunting. ;) |
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
sorry to hear that david. i havent had too good of a hunting experience lately. the deer just havent been moving at all where i have been hunting. i have seen one buck and thats it. if i see him during light hes down. good luck team 10 come on we need some points on the board.

RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
I hear ya shootem!!!! The weather in my neck of the woods is going to be nasty to say the least!!! Saturday morning......wet, cold and windy.....wind gusts up to 35 mph!!![:@][:@] I will have to think long and hard about climbing in a tree. Sounds like hunting from the ground weather. The wind is supposed to die down Saturday night, so hopefully with the cool weather the bucks will move.....Something has to give soon!!!![8D][8D]

RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
~~~~A REMINDER TO ALL OF TEAM 10~~~~
with deer starting to move more as we are getting closer to the rut i felt that now would be a good time to remind everyone to reread the rules for the pictures of bucks killed for the contest. make sure you have your bow in the picture first of all!! and i think that it was removed but it would still be a good idea to get a picture with the tag on the deer. i went out to the property i hunt to talk to the farmer and saw a buck chasing 3 does. i think that the rut will come a little earlier this year. i will be going out tomorrow night to hopefully SEE a deer. havent decided which spot im going to yet. good luck team 10, and wish me luck!! Shootem |
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
Man...are we still breathing here or what!!!! I am just curious to know if anyone is seeing anything worth harvesting. Me personally, I am seeing deer but the bucks are small and the does are still with their fawns. I know that will change soon, but COME ON!!!! The weather here in SW Ohio this weekend sounds more like spring.....highs in the low 70's, lows in the high 50's. Oh well could be worse........!!!![&:][&:]
|
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
same here. seeing a lot of deer but no bucks worth the shot in my opinion. i'll tell you guys this, i have been checking out the bucks shot and scored for the contest, if i were to shoot some of those bucks i might lose permission to hunt where i do. my moms sister is married into this family who owns the farm where i hunt so i have known them forever and there is no way the owner would let someone come in and hunt and shoot a 60 class buck. he would have a fit!!!!!!!!. he would kick my ass first and foremost and them not let me hunt. last year there were a few good bucks taken and every one of us will let the smalls ones walk. i took 2 doe during gun season and the owner took a small wounded deer he saw limping and got within 10yrds of it a put it down. only a small basket rack 6pt but he would have suffered if he didnt shoot him. he had seen a huge 12pt. that morning about 200yrds out and still did the right thing and took out the wounded deer and used his tag. it has been about 3 or 4 years since anyone got a real monster off this farm or the surrounding farms, we see them off about 400yrds bedded down in corn stubble but they are smart enough to stay that far out and when you even think about trying to sneak up on one they are gone. just a matter of time before one makes a mistake chasing tail and then someone will have a true monster on the wall. until then i will thin out the doe when gun season comes along and keep on head hunting with a bow. so if i dont get a buck sorry guys but if i do believe me he will be well worth the time, effort and patience i put into my hunting. wish me luck. maybe i'll get to post a monster in the next week or so.
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
A quiet month so far. October has come and gone. I spent my vacation sitting in several trees all week. No success, very little sign. A few small rubs, no scrapes. The DNR out in Ogle County found my pack with my GPS, rattlin' antlers and my seasons tags. They were nice enough to send me a letter stating their find. My good fortune.
I've spent the last week doing some promised home improvements and using the little free time I have tuning a new Parker I bought a few weeks ago. If all goes well this week the Parker is going to spend some quality time with me in my stand this weekend. I hope everyone has been enjoying their season. It has seemed to be a tough season for me to read. I keep reminding myself....patience and confidence will persevere. Welcome November! Good luck to all! |
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
This past Sunday morning was pretty amazing!!! I saw 3 different bucks (no shooters though). I saw the 2 smallest sparring a little bit. The smallest one made a scrape about 10 yards from my stand, then he made another about 5 yards from the orginial one. He also demolished a small bush as he was making the orginial scrape. They made their way to the left of my stand only to be pushed back my way by a decent 5 pointer. He was grunting like crazy, and boy was he letting the other two know he was the dominant one of the three. I know there are bigger bucks in the area, and I can't wait until this weekend!!! It is going to be cold, which should get the bucks really chasing. One more thing....I rattled 2 times, and the first buck came in approx. 5 minutes after my last rattling sequence. The second buck was coming in as well when he and the first buck made eye contact. Things are really starting to heat up. Hopefully I will be reporting in this weekend with a nice buck to get THE BIG TEN going!!!;);)
Hey guys. Today was the last day of bowhunting for me here and i went out this morning and 2 cows came from somwhere so their weren't any deer. All this month as i have gone out i have only seen 6 deer and all were does. I think next year i need to find a new spot. So..I am kinda upset but theres always next year.
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
Come on guys, you need to get on the board here! What's going on?? :D
I guess I don't have much room to talk though, even if I was still on your team I haven't shot anything either. Except a doe, but of course she doesn't count. Hopefully the bucks are moving in SW Wisconsin this weekend cuz that's where I'll be. If not, then it's back home to IL to try and get one of these sneeky suburban giants. Good luck to all you guys, I want to see you get some points on the board! |
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
vanden sorry to hear that. i put up another stand in a different hay field at one of my spots tonight. i saw 2 8 pointers. one is a yearling and the other is a nice 2 1/2 year old (i think) anyway ill be going out tomorrow hopefully to at least see a deer.
Fifteen yard shot double lung and top of the heart, 175lbs dressed. Trying to download pictures but have been unsucessfull so far, but will keep on trying. Muzzy's band to the bone. What have we got so far? Big ten all the way!!!!!!!
Awesome Lou-Lou. We wondered where you've been. Way to go.
I jumped an 8 point basket rack this past Sunday on my way out of my stand. And also found an enormous rub 20 yards from my stand. I'll be out there Saturday evening. Let's go boys! |
I haven't been here for a few weeks. I hope everyone's seasons are going well. lou lou, looking forward to seeing your photos and congrats on your harvest. I hope everyone still has plenty of season left. I do until Dec 23rd. I have been seeing some nice bucks but not the buck I want to harvest. Good Luck fellas, until later. Good hunting.
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
finally we are on the board! nice job lou lou! i am going out tomorrow morning if it is not raining. hopefully it stops 1/2 before first light. the deer would really be moving and i would be able to get in super quiet. (we have the day off school tomorrow) i plan on hunting from dawn to at least noon hopefully unless a friend calls and wants to go shoot some geese. the farmer saw a 6 and a button with a doe right out in front of my stand earlier. to my surprise he said the bucks werent even chasing her. they just kind of acknowledged she was there and kept on feeding in the field with her. weird?? well anyways im a looking to get one of the two 8 pointers i have been seeing. either way if its brown its down!!
way to go lou lou got us on the board! good luck team 10 |
RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread
Well things are heating up here in N.Y. This morning shot a 125lb doe at 12yards double lung shot , she ran 30 yards and then fell over, While dressing her out another doe came up on me , never saw me , so I grabbed my bow and shot her at 25 yards, 2 doe in about 15 minutes, it will never happen again, I'm not that lucky. I forgot to tell you guys a shot a doe in illinois on oct 6 of this year, the bucks were there but since it's early season you have to be right on top of them. Lucky for me the 2 does were on my grandfathers property. He has 10 crop damage tags to be filled this year so I used his instead of mine, so i could keep on hunting. that makes four deer for the big ten, sorry I was sandbagging I could keep it in any longer. 3 does and 1 buck not a bad year so far, My father bowhunts also and wanted to sign over his buck tag to me but we need permission from our conservation oficer who hasen't called me back yet, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Today I went out for the afternoon saw two more does and a monster 16 pointer, typical 10 with kickers everywhere. He was only 35 yards away and the does would not leave him one on each side of him. very frustrating!!!! Had the shot, but no buck tag until the officer calls me back and approves the transfer. What a bummer. Buck of a lifetime and no tag, that's the way it always goes, you know hunting for fall turkey and see a monster buck, hunting for deer and see a huge gobbler. Can't seem to win. Shoot straight guys it's only going to get better it the temps keep low. Lou-Lou2
