I have e-mailed our last two hold outs about checking in here. I hope we do not need any alternates. That would mean a new logo.

Can we tell when each of our seasons open and our initial thoughts to the type of hunting we each plan to do?

Mine - Illinois - October 1st

Working a 2,200 acre piece of public land. Looking to drop a climbing stand along a cross road I've located with plenty of White Oak shading the area. I found a what I think is a bedding area on the opposite side of the stand by about 60 yards. It looks quiet to get into. Haven't tried it in the dark though. I've also scouted a couple of alternate areas so I have choices with the breeze. And I'm heading out to an area close to my house this weekend for a look see. 4,000 acres within 15 minutes of home. a great place I think for that impulse hunt.

I am taking a week vacation October 18th for strictly hitting the woods of my two hunting areas. I wish this coming Monday was October 18th.

Many would call it disrespect but we have a great relationship this way. He is my all time favorite hunting partner and I wouldn't have it any other way. That said his bigger buck was with a gun. He has NEVER shot a buck with a bow. I have.:D And for being a stand stealer, I paid for that stand. I just happened to set him up on the best spot on the property when he started because he was my kid just starting out. It will be his when he is there. But I have almost 3 weeks of vacation to use this fall while he is in class.

I hunt western wisconsin, the nearest town is alma center, but for the out of staters it is 30 miles or so south east (ish) of eau claire... jackson county (borders on the famed buffalo county and trempaleau county)... my grandpa's 80 acre plot, which is 45 acres of woods and 35 of cornfield... the woods are a good mix with a lot of oaks, and the west end holds a creek with incredibly inpenetrable brush bordering on a cornfield (this is going to be my number one stand) and my number 2 is over the intersection of 2 HUGE trails leading into a cornfield, where we cut the old barbed wire fence to encourage them to cross in front of my stand... should they do it, i would have a 16 yard shot slightly quartering away... so hopefully i can make it

i will try to post an aerial shot from terraserver for fun if i can do it...

H80Hunter 08-27-2004 12:20 AM

RE: Official Team "The Big 10 " (10) Thread

well, if that worked, thats the 80 acres -- my grandpa owns from the old road on top, to the edge of the woods on the bottom, and then from all the way to the right, to just slightly left of the creek

my number 1 stand is the one farthest left, and number 2 is directly right of it a little ways

my brother saw a nice 10 pointer earlier this year, so maybe i can help the team out...

The three weeks might even it up but all the weekends you will be chasing "gurls" and working will more then put the odds in my favor. Just remember "better lucky then good". More time in the woods gives me more time to be lucky. Lucky 13 will take it all.

RE: Team 10

hi guys. the only thing i shot last year were does. i got 2 really nice does and a freexer full of meat during gun season. shot 1 in the neck at 20 yrds on the run and 1 head on in the chest. never ruined any meat and was satisfied with that. we have a little contest every year for biggest buck and put $25 in the pot. so far every year enough in to pay for mount and a little extra know what i mean around $400 or so. needless to say i havent been close to the money. but here are a couple of links to show you what kind of deer are in the area where i hunt. this big 13pt scored mid 170's has 26" and 27 " main beams and 22 1/2 spread. the kid who shot this took him on jan 30 2004 next to last day of bow season. this kid is only 14 and if he has his work ahead of him to top this deer in his life time i would think. sorry no field pics. i was at work when he got this buck and his film was in last year and i never bothered to get a copy of the field pics. buit here is sevealr views of this buck. maybe i can stick one like this, this year . i think i would help a whole lot : ) i'm jealous

So we now have the established gudge match. hoyt14 we are all behind you and plan to make sure that Dad has gets the chance to tip his hunting cap to you. And Dad tip it well, you've raised a true gentleman, hunter and a young man of respect (for his Dad and those that surround him)

I think our teams hopes rest on the shoulders of our younger team members. hoyt14, vanden10, and I have to ask H80Hunter you seem like a fine young man as well. I have no idea how old you are (due to the fact you profile says you were born 1904) but I feel you are one of the teams die hard, ready to battle, true to the bone members. You're really not over 100 yaears old, are you? Otherwise, we have a brand new category for wins. Octagenarean contest...we might have that one.

I want to thank Jzarr for taking over the roll of Team Captain. I just saw a thread that requires Team Captains to make some decisions I wouldn't want to have to make.

I guess what I'm trying to say, is I'm very proud to be on a team of sportsmen, woodsmen, archers and sons of archers, and gentlemen who step up and keep it about the sport, not about the game.

I think this alone will give us bragging rights whether we win or not. As a matter of fact, I think this is what will help us win something greater than braging rights. After all you earn bragging rights, not win them.

Now please, tell us your planned strategies, stand or still, scent or food plot, 12 point or 6 point, what did you learn from last year.

-David

Well I hope to do my best for ya, and yes THANK YOU DAD if you had never showed me what this sport is all about, I would be missing out on a life time of memories, and a wonderful relations ship with you that has really been highlighted through both hockey, and especially hunting.

As far as stands go, since it's earn a buck where we hunt[:@] I have a opening coming into our field where my deer gun stand over looks, we see dozens of deer during the early season there, both buck and doe, but it's more of a 12:1 ratio (seldom do we see bucks until later). This weekend we are doing the "Cabela's Run":) the one store that I can actually look forward to. Then one of these weekends soon, i guess we are gunna hang up our stands. But I guess after I stick one opening weekend, with any luck I’ll head up to stand #1 -it is at the corner of out property, and is over looking 4 old logging tails that come together. It’s at the top of the ridge, and the side closest to it, has about 210 Acers of pine (deer seem to like that) but with any luck I can pull the big boy from the trail camera into bow range, but then again seeing him would be nice too

And thanks Jzarr for being the captain, my dad is the captain of his team "unlucky 13" for those of you that donno yet, and I see that it isn't easy with the responsibilities that ya have, so thanks again

-Hoyt

On an unrelated note - my dad is looking to buy 80 acres of land just outside of Eau Claire so who knows, I might end up in your neck of the woods this fall. [8D]

I live in a crappy little apartment right on 14, across from the Marathon station. Gonna be on your right as you're driving towards Fox River Grove, just past the train station. HOPEFULLY gonna be moving after the 1st of the year though. I'd tell you where I work, but then I'd have to kill you. :D

i work in the building across the street from riverside collision in FRG, not 14 but the road that juts off on the left if you were going east on 14, we are practically neighbors!
there are NO real crappy apartments in Cary... come on now... im sure its just temporary anyway. you live pretty close to one of my hunting holes! its just across the river from you. ;)

good luck where ever you hunt. i have been seeing some SLOBS running around most of them are nocternal though so it might be the rut before we post anything on the forum for our teams, but hey who knows we might get lucky one day while they are walking back to their beds! :D
