Nice looking hog 98.
I always like the spot and stalk, but move slow and use the wind to your advantage as you can cover more area like this and also you can even hear them a lot of times. Slipping up on a group of hogs fighting one another with a bow is a real rush. Look for hog rootings and they'll usually be back in the early morning. Lot of times you can smell them. Slipping up on a group of hogs is more difficult then trying to get within range on just one. When the hogs head goes down to root, make your move at this time because when his head come up, he's listening for you and then your busted. Be patient and wait for your shot as the big boars will have a caluised shoulder blade and penetrating it not going to happen unless you wait for a quartering shot and shoot just behind it. The best grilling hogs are around 45 to 75 lbs and if they get up too around 200 lbs, I would just make sausage out of it. I never tried baiting for them but then again I never had no need to as the hogs were usually more of a nusuiance and would interfer with my deer hunting. Good luck, Bobby

that's a real nice hog. i might have to try those ideas. what i've always done is just kinda walk around and find out where they are and dump out some regular corn. where i hunt i don't have to worry about deer eating it. then in the late afternoon just walk around the area real quiet and often you can walk one up. i'm kinda scepticle about them having a good sense of smell, because the last time i went i was about 50 yards or less up wind and it didn't have a clue i was there. but hey. i ended up not shooting that one because she had piglets. but i just walked around a swampy area until we walked one up. it worked pretty well because the hog just stopped running at like 15 yards to look at me. if i can figure out a way to do it i'll scan on a pic. just wondering. what part of year do ya'll think is the best for hog hunting?

Hunter06....Hogs can smell VERY VERY well, they probably have one of the best noses out there, short of a bloodhound. I would venture that a hog's sense of smell is better than a deer's.

Take a look at this link on the hog's kill zone.

i would agree with you but this hog definately didn't exibit that very well. the one we found right after that smelled us. but like i said the one that we found out in the open didn't show the slightest sign of knowing we were there. but otherwise. that web link was pretty insightfull. that definately helps show you where everything is true to life.

Maybe the hog you happened upon had a habit of huffing spray paint

well i guess it's possible. there was a good bit of junk around for it to do that. i still couldn't figure it out though. because the wind wasn't blowing all that hard but it was enough to have it going right back to the hog. plus we weren't in that much cover. it was relatively open. maybe it was too preoccupied with its babies to care.
