Hoping to find some positve ideas from you guys who have dealt with telling people to leave your private property because it has got to crowded. My Grandfather owns a half mile strech of river bottoms 200-500' deep up against a river that is very good deer hunting. As the generations progressed (distant realatives and their friend) we now have at times 8 people in the field at a time(mainily during gun season). This amounts to all of us hunting 300'+- apart...very uncomfaortable. This number has increased because the distant relative and his friend are now bringing there kids. This group also is not very serious about deer management or hunting tactics. They shoot the spikes and constantly are pushing the river bottoms sending scent everywhere. They even scouted and moved tree stands the night before the gun opener. My brother and I are very serious deer hunters and have approached my Grandfather about improving the "hunt factor" on the farm. He is all for supporting us but is contemplating how to tell them they can no longer hunt at the farm, because they have been there so long (25yrs+-). My brother and I even offered to lease out the "hunting rights" from him. He doesnt want to upset anyone through this proccess. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

well welcome and that is a problem you have on your hands i know we have the same problem with our camp we own about 100 acers but there is a cabin next to ours on their land and they come on our prop and shot everything that is brown we have acesse to over 10000 acers but they hunt our prop where we tend to let the younger hunteres go so they can take there first deer but they come in and shot everything i dunno we put up posters saying you need permision but your prob is within your family persinaly i dunno what i would do sorry

Sound's to me that you might be able to work out a schedule for hunting ,so as not to pi-- anyone off .If you don't schedule the particular day to hunt then you don't hunt.I know it's hard because i understand why your grandfather doesn't want to upset anyone and it's a very fine line .But someone will have to do the scheduling. This might not be the best way to go about's this but it might work .The thing that your GF need's to get across is that he's worried about too many hunter's at once ,someone might get hurt and that he only want's 1or 2 or even 3 guy's hunting at once .If you have it scheduled that you and your brother are in there ,he can at least control it somewhat so that no one get's hurt or is disrupting anpother's hunt .
I do this here on a piece of property that i have permission to hunt ,I let the farmer know my plan's and then he tell's me who's in there so that i can contact them and we can either work out a game plan together so that we know where each other is ,or I can make alternate plan's to go elsewhere. But no more than a couple or 3 guy's should hunt an area of this size at once.
Good luck and I hope you's can work out something that everyone can agree on .
Your grandfather should get everyone who has permission together and explain the safety factor to them and maybe apply the schedule idea together .I'm sure he wouldn't want to see anyone get hurt on his property.

You have your grandfathers support thats an important factor right there seeing he is the owner. I had a similar problem with my younger brother bringing his friends and girlfriends dad and brothers out to our farm, which we worked very hard to manage. That year his girlfriends brothers stuck 2 does in which they never found and during rifle season they came back and killed to 10pts that both scored over 140''. At the same time my brother hunted very hard only to come up empty handed and I stayed away and hunted my grandfathers farm 20 miles away and filled all my tags. He then saw the effects of letting others hunt that don't necessarily have your same hunting ethics or management values. Needless to say we have had a talk and decided that next year its going back to normal. I explained that the farm was good hunting because of all the hard work and management we had put into it over the last 6 years but could all be destroyed from a year or two of poor management and half-hearted hunters. Maybe try to approach your distant realitives with your management ideas and see if they agree or are willing to comply with them. And ask them to cut out all the friends to enhance the hunt for not only you but them as well. If they are just primarily gun hunters and you a bowhunter then you could probably fit just them in and wouldn't have to worry about running them off completely. Provided they would practice the management practices you lay out. Sticky situation when family is involved but you do have your grandpas support (very important) GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!

That doesn't sound like a bad idea ,get everyone together and ask them to participate with their idea's of some good management idea's ,and to cut off friend's for a couple year's so as to strengthen the deer hurd on your grandfather's property . But it's alway's nice to know who' is where on the property on any given day .

All good things come to an end eventualy. Come up with a management plan which agrees with your grandpop and lay it out to the others. They choose not to go along with the plan evict them but let your grandpop and the others know this is what will happen right up front.

All is good advice. I would start dropping hints soon as possible though, in case you do give them the boot they have ample time to find another area to hunt. Lay down strict rules to follow, and I do mean strict. Try to get a reaction out of them and this should give you an idea how they will follow or IF they will follow them. I also would bring everything out in the open at this time to avoid having to go thru it again! Good luck!
