Default Lohman Pump Action yelper turkey call review

Awhile back I asked about bowhunting turkeys and whitetails simultaneously, and got favorable responses. I ordered the new Lohman Pump Action turkey call, and got it a few days ago. I finally had a chance to play around with it.

All I can say is, this call is so freaking easy to use and sounds just like a turkey that it's scary! It uses mouth diaphrams in the tube, but you use your hands to work it, even one handed. Very, very realistic, can do yelps, cuts, kee kee runs, putts and cackles. Within 5 minutes I had enough confidence to hit the woods with no reservations whatsoever.

If you are leary about learning to call turkeys, get this call. For $20, you get it and a video showing it in action as well as how to use and maintain it. Very much worth it.

Can't wait to put it in action.

I agree with you on the ease of making the call work. I can't get over the gagging effect of mouth calls so have used a slate for years with good results. This is a good alternative and allows you to buy cheaper mouth calls to change tones.

Should have added, you can adjust a dial easily to make it sound like different birds in a flock. Very versatile call.

I owned one and was less impressed with it than you.

I bought one 2yrs ago, and had nothing but trouble out of it. Here are a few of the problems I had.

1. The dial goes out of tune while walking through the woods, then when you first try to run it, you sound like a goose, not a turkey. When trying to call a turkey, I dont want to spend 5 minutes squalking trying to tune a call.

2. I like to travel light, and its a little bigger than I like.

3. It requires too much movement when operating.

4. You cant do the cluck and purr on it, and that is my favorite finish bringing the bird in call. In fact you cant really call much at all once the bird gets close because of the movement.

5. Finally the last straw for me was it has a black rubber diaphram that controls the air flow. After practicing on it less than a week, the diaphram blew out.

That was the last straw for me, I threw it over a rock cliff and never looked back.

That being said, I still believe it is a good call to learn on if nothing else works for you. If you cant take a mouth diaphram because of the gag reflex though, I would suggest a tube call. You can do everything on it, and still have very little movement.

It seems like a good call for hunters that have difficulty using the mouth diaphram. It does put out good turkey sounds just like you can using the mouth diaphram. Only fault on it I can see is the main advantage of using a mouth diaphram is lack of movement, no hands obviously. Thats a real advantage when bowhunting gobblers!

Diaphram calls just about make me barf each time I try to use one. I must have a touchy gag reflex. I use a slate and would really like to try the box on the barrel call. You know the one with the string. I really like the Idea of not having to move much in case you need to call when a turkey is in sight of you and you need to bring him in that extra few yards. I'm sure that I could mount it on my bow somehow.
