RE: I AM SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ONCE AND FOR ALL!
They are entertainment and maybe just to keep the "I will never" guys still hoping. Of course they see lots of deer and shot big bucks, how fun would it be to sit and watch the wind blow the grass. Anybody that watchs this and thinks the deer are right behind each other are well....I won't say it. In a half and hour they have to talk, sell and entertain...so just take it for what it's worth. The one thing I like is they harvest mature bucks, I have seen several shows where they pass young deer with potential to harvest a prime buck who's best days are behind him..with result being not much of score jump from the younger deer. This promotes QDM and Trophy hunter values. They lack in realization but like said so do many movies we all love...just entertainment.
Supermag 445, I have many landowners where I hunt call me & tell me of big bucks they have seen....does this make me not a hunter? You still have to have them show up, never a sure thing. And no I don't hunt on fenced land, all private farm or public lands with wild deer. I just chalk it up with years of building a relationship or trust with the landowners. For those who are jealous, who wouldn't want to hunt for a living...common on. If your a brown it's down type, great. Many others look for more and that is great too. Not everyone should be the same in their expectations, wants or views, but we are all common in our love to hunt. Be respectful of others opinions and keep up the tradition. |

I find it odd that there are that many people on this BBS who can get their undies in a bundle because someone makes videos of hunting big bucks. P.S. If you don't learn ANYTHING watching these videos that can help you....your not paying much attention. I would be willing to bet that if you guys spend a good amount of time at a registration station , you'd probably agree with straightarrow on the percentage of hunters who harvest anything. Not that it matters to me , to each his own. ![]() "Nocked, cocked & ready to rock" |
RE: I AM SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ONCE AND FOR ALL!
Bowfanatic,
I think everyone should spend a day at a check station. Back in my former life, when I had dreams of becoming a wildlife biologist, I did some intern work for the NYS DEC. One day was spent at a deer check station on opening day of shotgun (1975). Back then, there was a lot more hunters and I doubt anyone in the state had ever heard of QDM. By the end of the day, I had seen hundreds of deer and I was pretty much convinced that 1.5 years was the maximum age of a buck in NY. The number of button bucks that filled "antlerless tags" was amazing. They gave me some statistics that I vaguely remember, but as I recall, something like 85-90% of the buck kill occurred on opening day. It's a bit better now, but you don't see out-of-state hunters coming to NY to hunt big bucks. It's a shame too. The potential is there, proven by the small tracts that are being managed. However, probably less than 1% (a guess) of the deer herd consists of mature bucks(4.5+ yr). If you hunt around me you hunt hard to see a 2.5 yr buck and a 3.5 yr buck will only come within sight once every decade (if you hunt hard enough). You want to see a mature buck here, well, I want to win the lottery too. I'm not complaining, and I don't want every deer to be a trophy, but it would be nice if 1000 hours in the field could result in seeing one mature deer. |
RE: I AM SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ONCE AND FOR ALL!
I think if some of you guys who bitch about these vidios would stop buying them and save your money, you could afford to hunt a better area too. I really could care less about hunting videos. I don't buy them and very rarely do I watch them.

RE: I AM SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ONCE AND FOR ALL!
I dont consider myself an average joe hunter. Is that a bad thing? I did take a nice 8 pointer last year, but left a lot of smaller bucks go because I can do this on my property. I guess there is nothing wrong with these shows, I just hope someone comes up with a more informative approach, and not just view it as entertainment. I am not saying a believe everything I hear though. Yes, a lot of videos and are shot in high or low fence areas, but because the areas are so large, most deer dont know they are enclosed. Like the Sanctuary in Michigan.
I guess I'm just looking for a new "breed" of hunting show. My guess is I'll be waiting a while. |

RE: I AM SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ONCE AND FOR ALL!
StraightArrow I can't take it any longer, I think ones perspective on this topic of passing yearling bucks has much to do with where you hunt.
Many states have a lease system that allows a group of hunters to purchace or lease the exclusive rights to hunt on a certain piece of property each year. Many of the leases in my area are contracts drawn up with timber companies, some are from private individuals. But reguardless, most of these groups adopt rules that are designed to allow the young bucks to mature. Generaly these groups will target a certain age class of deer (bucks) for harvesting. Many target 2 1/2 year olds but the better, more expensive land tracts don't even consider harvesting a buck deer untill he's reached 5 1/2. But virtually "all" the ethical members (probably 90%) of these clubs pass on small bucks every year. Now I have hunted some public land that recieves much pressure. If that was the only experience I could draw from I too, would believe that 90% of the hunters shoot everything that walks. The difference is you aparently have not been fortunate enough to enjoy the thrill of hunting one of these, even marginally managed ranches. There is much pleasure in watching a nice, young 8 pt. walk under your stand and just knowing he'll be there next year.... KEEP THE WIND IN YOUR FACE.... FLETCH |
RE: I AM SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ONCE AND FOR ALL!
Fletchdp,
I was never referring to indiviuals or small select groups, I'm talking about hunters in general. I'm very aware that leases exist, even in New York there are many, but the total number of hunters that get to use these leases vs the number who buy licences in New York is very small. I live 5 miles from the PA line, so getting a PA out of state licence is something I do from time to time. In general, PA is no better than New York, until maybe next year. There is almost no public land to hunt in my immediate area. 90% is private and you have to get permission to hunt it. As I said in my previous posts, I know other states have better percentages of those who will voluntarily pass on a buck. You didn't mention how far off you thought my guess was. What percentage of licenced hunters do you think are passing on legal bucks? |
RE: I AM SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ONCE AND FOR ALL!
StraightArrow, I guess I'll have to give you the benefit of the doubt on your estimate. My experience is really limited to Texas and Louisiana where I have hunted my entire life and I am probably quite uninformed about the national averages. Around here I'm sure more than half the hunting population hunts private land and let's some walk.
I do however feel Team Realtree and especially the Primos Bros. are probably pretty fair woodsmen. And Yeh, I must also admit I'm more than a little jealous of these guy's... Man they get to sit on some pretty good deer stands don't they? Good Luck and I hope you get that bigen........ KEEP THE WIND IN YOUR FACE.... FLETCH |
