Default Do treestands spook deer?

This is something I've been wondering about for a while now. Do you think some treestands spook deer? For instance, look at the Summit stands, thats a lot of junk hanging off the tree. Even though your sitting in it in full camo, what about the rest of the stand? All the smooth lines that make up the stand itself I think really would stick out in a tree to a deer, especially if they are close. I used a Summit Viper last season and I was picked off more last season then when I was hunting out of my Loggy. And I was using the same trees I did with my loggy a year ago. I've since gone back to a Loggy because of this.

What is everyones opinion?

I have wondered the same thing, one thing i have been considering is getting the sumnit enclosure, then getting some additional material to sew on and "shred" to give it a "leafy" appearance.

i think the snow camo would make a good pattern once the leaves are off, I also thought about tryign to find Predator camo by the yard then covering the summit blind with it or just having my wife sew me a cover with the Predator.

I think the trick is finding a tree that you don't stick out in. You have to evaluate your background and picture your stand as if your looking from the deers position. You want enough stuff behind you to break-up your outline. Just because it's a nice "climbing" tree doesn't make it a good "stand" tree.

Could be, all I know is that deer are smartning up to tree stand hunting. Years ago, they never looked up.

I can certainly see how they would spook deer and based upon your experience with the summit and the loggy I'd definately say so. IMO stand location is of utmost importance. I'm always looking for a tree with good back cover. I prefer to hang my stands in hardwoods but like to find a tree with a pine or spruce either partially covering my front or back to break up my outline. Another thing I believe is important is to get 18-22 feet up the tree. I personally do not like to go higher when bow hunting due to the angle of shots it creates but getting up close to 20 feet will help to keep you hidded from view.

I use a summit viper and do not get picked off but I am careful with the tree I pick. The issue with all climbers are you have to have a straight tree with no limbs in order to climb it. This means no cover. I look for trees close together to provide cover or climb to the height where the limbs start. I had a buck 15 yards from me yesterday and I was in my climber and he never knew I was there. I was also only 15 feet off the ground, but had good back cover. I have had deer directly under me beofore also. I try to face the direction deer will come if I have limited cover to keep the tree trunk behind me to block any movement. Good luck and do not give up yet. Evaulatue your setups where you got busted from the deers perspective at ground level. That may provide some answers.

I think that deer can see stands. I use a Cabelas lounger. This is a large comfortable stand. It comes with a shooting rail around the whole stand. I use this to attach camo around and i got some plexi panels painted with leafless branches and a gray backround. Make sure to look at your stand from the deers view. Also make sure to put your stand out way before the season starts so they get used to the stand.

I use a Lone Wolf.. I've used several different stands and this one is by far the best I,ve come across. It's very quiet, and very stable. I've had deer pass by at less than 20 yards within minutes of climbing the tree. The design of the platform and seat make this stand almost seem to disaper on the tree. I guess it's just personal preference

Have you considered that you stated that "in the same tree as you've hung the other stand"? Maybe you should just pick another tree close by or go a little higher. It's possible that the deer have zoned you.

I'm not sure if it matters but have wondered the same thing. I take precautions to break-up all my stands. First.......I camo paint all my portables in a pattern similar to Predator Fall Grey. Second......I buy a package of those plastic leaves, (2 per branch) and zip tie 6 or 7 to the platform stand base edges and bottom. Its amazing how that works!

good Luck!
