I had just recently spoke with my parents the other day only to find out the the guy that my dad gave permission to hunt there had shot our buck that was about a 2 1/2 year old 6 point. Wasn't a shooter this year but possibly next season. Now the worst thing about this whole deal is that he never found the deer.[:@] Now he still has an empty tag to do it again, lets hope not.

Well, I can't say much for the deer being lost, but as for him shooting "your" buck I don't really know what else you expected. Did you expect him to just pass up on the shot? Maybe it was a shooter buck to him? Something he'd be proud to take home to the wife and kids? What's a shooter to you may be a monster to someone else. What is a shooter to someone else may be a dink to you.

Sounds kind of selfish to me.

HuntinMN,
Unless your dad laid out specific guidlines for the hunter as far as what he could and could not shoot on your property you have no reason to be upset at his choice to shoot that deer.......Wounding him is unfortunate and never a pleasant thought, but as soon as you give someone permission to hunt without a set of rules, the deer now become "His" to make his own decisions with.
If that was a problem I suggest you mention to your dad to lay down some ground rules for guest hunters if you want certain deer off limits, especially since you say he has plans to continue hunting there.

Sorry to hear that fella, when i have guest on my property i lay out all the rules before hand and give a safety briefing for everyone along with a lil prayer.
Thats just hunting! Maybe you get a nice one this year. You should have also tried to help find the deer.

I read into that just as everyone else had. I'm glad you restated your position on "our" buck. If you're trying to manage the land for trophies then definately set some rules. Personally I like the shoot it and mount it rule that someone had posted about. Let them thin the does and if they want the buck bad enough then the shell out $350.00 to mount it. IMO it's a great way to keep people from shooting dinks.

I'm sorry to hear he lost the deer. When had this happened? I kick him square in the pants if he gave it a 45 minute look and gave up on it. A downed deer deserves a couple days of looking . I'f he didn't give it that I kick him square off my property. Just my $0.02 that's all

Maybe help him look for the deer. Then you could take advantage of that time to educate him yourself on what you are trying to do on that piece of property. He would probably respect the offer of assistance and make him more acceptable to your thought process.

Maybe you get lucky and find the deer to boot!

Be optimistic. Search high and low for the deer and if you come up with nothing, assume that the buck could possibly survive his wound to be hunted another day.

Any indication about where he thinks he shot the buck?
What kind of blood trail?
Was there a blood trail?

Hope it all turns out good in the end.

Good news, I just learned today that the deer was found late Saturday afternoon about a 1/4 of a mile from where they shot it, unsure off its condition since it was about 20 hours later and the temps have been warmer than normal lately. I apologize if I sounded to harsh and greedy. Good luck to all and make your shots count.
