RE: How many of you like total solitude vs. being with buddies?
That's a tuffy....Good Question.
The last few years @ camp there have only been 4 of us. Usually we have 6 or so. I must say that I like it better with fewer people. We all like to play cards, hangout & B.S. We all carry radios in the woods to keep in touch. Usually, two of us will hunt in one area, & the other two will go hunt a totally different area. After dark we all meet back @ camp, enjoy a few cold ones, & talk about the days hunt. We usually make a big home cooked meal. I like the commoradary(sp?) of the whole thing. However, sometimes I feel that I may be the "most serious hunter" in the group. I like to stay out all day, do a lot of homework, & read alot, etc. The guys kid me, but that's OK. A long time ago, just me & my dad hunted together, & slept in a tent for a week. That was one I never forget. We have never done it since. I think it is safer going out in the woods w/ two people. If I was by myself, & somthing bad happened, I don't know what I'd do. |

depends.....deer and turkey i prefer to be by my self.....except when doing deer drives.....thats a diffrent story...but ill take a day alone in the woods any chance i can get....only thing i take friends hunting is like woodchucks....doves....pheasants and rabbits....heck i dont even like SQUIRREL hunting with other people....except my dad..ill hunt anything with him....but not my friends.....they know how serious i am and they really dont enjoy hunting with me because im so into it......and i wont take them to MY hunting spots.....if i want to find a new area and one wants to go small game hunt ill go there.....i enver open my mouth about oh man this is a good turkey or deer spot though...i keep it all hush hush....i dont need to goto a honey hole i found to find all my buddys there.......i love the peace and quiet and relaxation of being in the woods....alone with nature......but a day in the field busting corn fields with 5 friends is a blast in small game season......and doing giant deer drives........

I do both - and enjoy both for different reasons.
As far as freindships go - there is no closer freindship than those made at deer camp. |

I enjoy the company in camp but I don't want to see you in the woods. When we are elk hunting I may cover 10 plus miles in a day during a spot and stalk hunt. Love the solitude until I make a kill then I love company.

RE: How many of you like total solitude vs. being with buddies?
If I do hunt alone, I make sure somebody knows where I am. I got hurt very badly 6 years ago. It was life threatening and I was all alone in the woods. Somehow, I managed to get myself out of the woods and happened to find somebody at a house who could take me to the hospital. I was bleeding so badly, a friend of mine, followed my blood trail back to my stand to pick up all my gear. NOBODY ever knew I was going hunting that day and I missed the whole hunting season that year. It could have been another tragic hunting story, but I kept calm and remembered some of the survival training from my past which kept me alive and moving even though I was in shock.
On the other side...I now hunt with 3 or 4 other guys at camp. We have a great time during the season. When somebody gets a deer, there is always another guy there to help him track and celebrate! It's a great feeling when you can share a sucessful hunt with a good friend. I can't wait for it to happen with my 2 sons, which hopefully will be this year with my 15 year old. |

I prefer total solitude when hunting but love to gather with buddies after the hunt to share stories and deer hunting theories and philosophies.

I'm with you wolfen. Athough I would say that my brother-in-law and I are thinking of doing some buddy hunts with a camera.

RE: How many of you like total solitude vs. being with buddies?
I prefer to hunt by myself.
The past two years I've hunted with a couple of buddies and one guy was always looking out for himself, always hunted the best spots never asked just went, saw a monster @ 100yds and it was his buck no one else could shoot him, etc so this year I'm back to hunting by myself. |
RE: How many of you like total solitude vs. being with buddies?
I'd have to say, I like both. Hunting by myself is a totally relaxing, almost spiritual experience but it does get old. It's fun to have buddies around camp. Last year, on a wyoming rifle hunt, I got to watch two of my buddies shoot their deer. It was an incredible hunt. Buddies are especially handy to have around for dragging.
