Ya i'll shoot a doe, would like a big buck, but who wouldn't. Besides i think that the meat is a lot more tender.

Do you eat venison??

Just wondering............why would you never shoot a doe??
Yea I eat it - but give alot of it away - The couple deer I shoot a year is PLENTY for me and friends.
So you bow hunt during the regular season on public land to get your second buck??

You get a "couple" mature bucks every year??

What are the reasons for not shooting a doe in your opinion.........and is this a personal feeling of yours or the way you were taught from someone else early on??

Just curious.

ORIGINAL: 3 Step

I haven't shot a doe in my 45 years of deer hunting.

Why not?

3 Step:

(and, by the way, it's "doe" not "does")
3 Step, let's not get into grammar lessons... FYI, "doe" AND "does" are both acceptable plural forms to describe female deer. ;)

My dad is 55 and is part of the generation who believes in that fact that it's better to shoot a buck(spike, fork or basket 6 included) over a doe. Because he thinks it's better for the herd. I've given him multiple articles for him to read, I've tried to explain it over a 12 pack and he still doesn't want to believe it. Just can't convince him. Oh well. He only deer hunts 3-4 days out of the year and doesn't take it that seriously, so he can't do too much damage. lol
Stump- My dad has a real issue with killing does too. He KNOWS that he's wrong in his thinking and he says that he knows the right thing to do is to kill a few does every season. The good news is that he won't shoot at anything smaller than a 6 point, so at least he's not killing the little guys... I'm still working on him and trying to get him to kill some does each year, but it's tough to teach an old dog new tricks I guess. [&:]

Yes to the first - thats all I hunt

Mostly yes to the second - throw in a couple nice 2.5yr olds. I have taken two bucks a year for the last 6 yrs.

I don't really know what your looking for or why:) but I will answer anyway:(

I don't think they shouldn't be shot - I am not against anyone going out and taking as many as they want.
I do not practice QDM. I would get zero satisfaction out of killing a doe - I have never had the desire to take one - even when I strugled like crazy, when I was younger. I couldn't find a buck to save my life. I got lucky my second day bowhunting with a nice buck - then went years with nothing. I still let the doe walk.

They are two seperate species in my eyes - one of them I hunt the other I let walk. Its just me.

If I ever feel like killing one I will, untill that time comes I will not.

Wow.......you have managed to take a second buck during gun season with a bow for 6 years straight on public battlefields???...........nice work.

Don't be so paranoid Rack ;) Just wondered if it was personal or something you were taught by an earlier generation.

That is all you had to say..........fair enough.

I just find it very interesting that someone who spends as much time as you do and gets as much satisfaction from taking a buck........would get "zero" satisfaction from taking basically the same animal without the head gear.

Is there more to it then that or is it just the bone?

Would you get any satisfaction from taking a large mature buck if his rack was dropped or broken off??

Again.........bravo to any guy that can take a second buck 6 years in a row during gun season on NY's public battlefields.

Nope, not me. I don't discriminate. I'll shoot a doe or 6 if I have tags for them.:)

RE: Is there ANYONE on here that will absolutely NOT shoot a DOE?

I'm another non-doe hunter. I also would gain no satisfaction from killing a doe. For me it's not about the meat, it's about the pursuit. I haven't eaten venison in years. Truthfully I think that anyone that says venison is better than beef is out of their mind.

I do think that someone needs to shoot the does, so I'm glad to hear that most people do. I shoot only bucks, but I do let the yearlings walk. Since I'm not in it for the meat, I am in it for the horns. I place more emphasis on filling my wall than my dinner plate. I consider myself to be a trophy hunter. To me a doe is not a trophy. I said "to me". Please don't get your panties in a wad. ;)

I am not that good:D - This is long Island - 3 month bow season then a 1 month shotgun season that I don't hunt.;)

Well thats were we differ in opinion:D - like I said before - different species - not even close. The head gear has not as much to do with it as you think - Its not the "gear", Its what it represents. At that age they are not easy to come by. I can get a good oportunity at a doe on almost every hunt if I chose to hunt for them. I pray for just one chance at a good buck.

Thats where the "satisfaction" lies for me - when and if a real big boy shows, you better make it count - beacuse it could be years before you see another. You blow an oportunity at a doe and well............there is always tomorrow.:D

Enjoy....and good luck:D;)

RE: Is there ANYONE on here that will absolutely NOT shoot a DOE?

I understand exactly where Rack is coming from. I too was brought up being taught there wasn't anything worse than a poacher and a doe shooter. Lower than life scum bags. Well, I changed over the years with the changing of herd size and and all that. You can bet your dollar if I could only shoot 1 or 2 deer a year I'd be after a buck too. Hunt on Rack.
