RE: Is there ANYONE on here that will absolutely NOT shoot a DOE?

For many years in Ill. (I only Bowhunt) you only had one tag & I would hold off for a Buck until the last few days b/4 gun season. I moved to Iowa a few years back (1/2 hour from my Ill. home) & until last year only had 1 tag & always held off for that Buck. I will probably get an additional antlerless tag available this year BUT I have been Bowhunting 48 years now & it is difficult for me to take a Doe-I guess it's the old way of thinking as you say-I DO KNOW we shound take some Does but having been fortunate to have taken many Whitetails (biggame of many kinds, in fact) it is sometimes difficult. I KNOW we should balance the herd (or try) but it does become difficult having taken several Bucks over the years. I am not a trophy hunter by any means-just a Bowhunter who loves our sport. Good Luck to all this season.

Wow i didnt know that they were that many ignorant hunters on this web-site. When i say ignorant i mean it as uneducated. People not shooting a doe during the deer season? What is wrong with you!? Shoot a doe the herd wont grow? What the hell is that!!!!!! Someone has no idea about herd management. The more deer there is the less food there is for the other deer, more food and more nutrients mean bigger deer and healthier deer. I shoot as many does the state of ohio will let me, with the exception of a dandy buck of course. You have to shoot the does, period. If you shoot the good bucks you will never shoot any great ones.:eek:DUH.
These are the type of people that ruin hunting for every one else.

You really should read slowly and carefully to comprehend what your reading before making posts that insult someone for not hunting the same way you choose to! The replies that I carefully read stated they understood the importance of doe harvest but chose not to participate.

Truthfully I think that anyone that says venison is better than beef is out of their mind.
Me and my entire family must be "out of our minds".:)
Different strokes for different folks I guess. I'll take butterflyed backstraps over the best cut of beef any day!

Thank you Bow:D

Just because we hunt differently or for different reasons - does not mean we don't love this sport the same.

I am a big proponent of "Do what ever makes you happy" legaly - thats really why we are in this sport........isn't it

Hunt on Rack.
Thank you Sir:D.....and so I will..............as you the same;)

I am not that good:D - This is long Island - 3 month bow season then a 1 month shotgun season that I don't hunt.;)
OK.......I don't hunt near NY city so what is the deal over there??..........you get to kill 2 bucks during bow season?? Are these special tags because I didn't think you were allowed to use a gun season buck tag during archery anywhere. Do you guys have the same license options or different setup all together over there?

Well thats were we differ in opinion:D - like I said before - different species - not even close. The head gear has not as much to do with it as you think - Its not the "gear", Its what it represents. At that age they are not easy to come by. I can get a good oportunity at a doe on almost every hunt if I chose to hunt for them. I pray for just one chance at a good buck.
We don't differ as much as you think ;) .............hey, I am no different then anybody else out there. Big bucks are great and when I daydream in my stand about something strolling down the ridge under my stand it isn't a doe or a spiker [8D] There is just a much wider gap between big bucks and the "others" for you then me..........and my family's unending appetite for venison is probably the major reason for that. If I shoot a big buck that's great, if I shoot one of the "others" that's great too.........they all look the same in the freezer. If you had a greater desire/need for venison like I do then you would understand better. If I had a much less desire/need for the meat I would be able to relate better to your approach. Neither one of us is right or wrong and that isn't what I am trying to say.........just figured I would ask in a more "calm" thread so it wasn't taken the wrong way.

Thats where the "satisfaction" lies for me - when and if a real big boy shows, you better make it count - beacuse it could be years before you see another. You blow an oportunity at a doe and well............there is always tomorrow.:D

Enjoy....and good luck:D;)

Why is a mature old buck any smarter, wiser, or more elusive then a mature old doe??

For me it's not about the meat, it's about the pursuit. I haven't eaten venison in years. Truthfully I think that anyone that says venison is better than beef is out of their mind.

Why not just take a camera then instead of a bow??

Actually I often do take the camera as well. I like to film what I don't intend to kill, and if I have time, I even like to film the deer I do intend to shoot at.

You are a bowhunter, right? Do I really need to answer your question? The desire to pursue a quarry goes far beyond filling a freezer. Besides, it's an opportunity for me to give a freezer full of meat to someone that needs it much more than I do. If that's the only reason, it is reason enough. I think there is plenty of honor in what I do.

Mucho appreciato:D

In Suffolk County Bow season IS our regular season. Our big game buck tag is used and so is our buck bow tag. And every doe (about 4 tags worth) can be checked in for another either sex tag…………But I am not that greedy:D No Bow stamp is needed.

Why is a mature old buck any smarter, wiser, or more elusive then a mature old doe??
This is a little of topic so I will be brief:

1 – No young ones tagging along. No matter how smart, or reclusive a mature doe is, having two stupid, hungry, and anxious little ones severely hurts her ability to be stealthy. Because of this they move more during light. Yes they can be very smart – but they are moving – often in open woods – this makes them vulnerable.

2 – Safe zones – Doe have much larger “safe zones”. Bucks often seek out the thickest and toughest areas to be during light. It may not be because they are smarter – but it is in their behavior.

3- Patterns. Doe are much more rigid to daily movements than mature bucks. Its very uncommon to see a pressured buck doing the same thing two days in a row (except for pre-rut), and even that is tough.

4- There is simply less of them.

5- Curiosity. Doe are curious – Mature bucks are not. I cannot count how many times a mature doe has sensed something wrong and moved around for a long time trying to figure out what it was. Often presenting many shot opportunities – That would of never been there if she just left. I have never witnessed a mature buck do this. He is gone – and he asks questions latter.

:D
