Last year I took one of each, a buck and a doe and am out of venison. This year I mite have to take another doe or two for the freezer. They are far better to eat than a buck is.

I haven't met a bowhunter yet that wont shoot does. I've met quite a few gun hunters that are older gentlemen that wont shoot does , it's just part of their generation and the way they did things when they started hunting.

There are a lot of them that I can think of......

BUT THEN..... that's because they never get close enough. Nyuck Nyuck Nyuck.

Seriously, I doubt it in todays world of educated deer management hunters. The few places that there might be such people are in areas of extremely low populations where they get one tag and that's it. If I could only shoot one I doubt it would be a doe. The season would be over all to early in the year.

I would rather take a doe. I think they taste better. Where I hunt we can take 4 does a year but only 2 bucks. It doesn't hurt my feelings at all if I don't get a buck at all.

Shooting does is probably the best thing you can do for a better rut if your buck to doe ratio is out of wack. I shoot does and as stated above they do taste so good. Last year I shot two , this year Im going for more. I try shoot does early in the season and then once the rut gets going work on a buck.

My dad is 55 and is part of the generation who believes in that fact that it's better to shoot a buck(spike, fork or basket 6 included) over a doe. Because he thinks it's better for the herd. I've given him multiple articles for him to read, I've tried to explain it over a 12 pack and he still doesn't want to believe it. :D Just can't convince him. Oh well. He only deer hunts 3-4 days out of the year and doesn't take it that seriously, so he can't do too much damage. lol

The guys that really confuse me are the ones that are much more happy to shoot a small buck over a doe. It's almost like with them, if you don't shoot a buck...it's not worth shooting. An ego builder. Or maybe they feel more like a man.

Let's see.........me, 2 brothers, dad, all our wives, 4 kids, some uncles and friends and their has to be enough venison to go around for 10 months between seasons.

I'll shoot her........her sister.......her mom.......her aunt.........and if her daughter is still standing there I will put my last slug/arrow in her ;)

They all look the same in a Zip-Lock [8D]


Seriously........I don't care to shoot first year deer but even that is not set in stone :)

My brother killed a button buck last year that was absolutely unbelievably tender and maybe the best venison I have ever had..........anyone who says shooting that buck was wrong has never tasted meat that good.

nope , not me...i try to do my part in the deer management.....havent gotten a doe, so i am looking forward to it :D

Absolutely. The meat is so much more tender. I also do it to keep the buck to doe numbers in line.
