I am a fanatic about trying to remain sent free. I own a set of Sent Lok liners, My hunting pants and early season jacket are Sent Lok. I know what has been said this last year about sent-lok clothing, but I happen to think it works. I have had deer just milling around under my stand with the wind in there face and they did not smell me. This could just be blind luck or the stuff actually works. I don't know but I don't ever remember this happening without scent-lok.

I also wash all my cloths in sent free soap and store them in an air tigh rubbermaid container year round. I dress in my hunting cloths when I get to where I am hunting. I where rubber boots hunting wich are sprayed down with scent killer. All of my accessories are kept in the rubbermaid container and sprayed with scent killer on my way to my stand.

Last but not least anything that goes into the woods with me is never carried inside my truck including my bowcase and quiver.

My girlfriend thinks I am nuts. Are there any others that go that extreme to stay sent free? Is there anything else I could do?[8D][8D][8D][8D]

Yeah I do all that and a whole lot more! Well except I don't bother with the scent lok suits[8D]

If your hunting for a mature whitetail you have to always be conscious of your scent and treat it as the the #1 factor that you have a little control of. :eek:Sometimes.

Oo yeah, couple things you could add......Scent free body/hair soap & deodorant, scent free vehicle(no vanila pinetrees) scent free storage of treestands(how many do this) two pair of rubber boots(takes awhile to dry the inside out[:-]) unscented toilet paper(J/K):D And don't ever! EVER! get stuck on E and have to go for gas on your way to the woods!(preplan is very important)

All of this is still useless if your careless in the woods, walking around brushing up against everything and not thinking twice about your entry to your stand. Because I don't care how scent free you think you are, You aint even close cousin!

I too believe in scent lok suits. I actually use all scent blocker plus. I have an early season suit and a winter suit. Aside from that, I wash it all in scent free detergent...can't remember the brand. I store everything in tubberware containers. Before every hunt I shower with hunters specialties scent free soap. I dry off with a towel stored in plastic bags that have been washed in scent free detergent. Just abot all my clothes I wear under my outerware is also washed in scent free detergent.

I don't put my outware on until I get out of the truck. Before I put it on I spray everything down with scent killer spray. I actually switched over to scent blocker carbon spray.

When I get to my stand I have a small spray bottle filled. I spray down one last time. If I'm using my summit climber I make sure I spray that down as well. Can' forget about the hat, bow, arrows, or a decoy if I'm using it. Thats about it!

Scent Free..... how far do I go? For Bowhunting...

1. Shower before every hunt and or a scout, Using scent eliminating soaps.
2. Spray down in the shower stall with Vanishing hunter, entire body.
3. Step out of shower, use a scent free washed towel to dry off and then spray down again, then slip on scent free washed sweats and socks and spray down again on top of those sweats.
4. Exit house as quickly as possible 3-4 seconds from bathroom to my front door.
5. Get in Vehicle (making sure I spray my seat down good with vanishing hunter) or get on on quad (spray it down too) to ride to the general area I am hunting.
6. Get out of Rig, or off the quad and strip down. Spray down again.
7 Put scent lok liner system on out of scent sealed bag. I wear two liners if its cool enough out. This liner systems covers me from head to toe (gloves, head cover) and is comfortable by its self even in very hot weather. If it's colder out I add a layer of camo ontop of the scent lok liners, if hot I just hunt in the liner, its olive green and blends in fine.
8. Scent lok liner is on, now spray down again. Spray fanny pack and put it on with my rubber boots if I am whitetail hunting, scent liner boots if elk hunting on the ground, spraying them inside and out before putting them on. Pull bow out of case and spray it down.
9. walk to hunting area, with whitetails, to a stand or ground blind, with elk if I am calling ........I walk and carry the Vanishing hunter if I start sweating which ya do alot elk hunting I keep spraying down now and then
when needed.
10. Get close to stand, say 500 yards out, spray down again. The stuff I use you can spray in your mouth.... and I do.
11. Get in stand, get settled, Spray down again.

I never "worry" about the wind, I still "play" it but dont worry and I often hunt right near mature bucks beds where the wind in this mountainous country swirls anyway. I pass several bucks that continue to come by right under me day to day in early season even with temps of 90+. Since I have adopted this scent free regimen, I have never witnessed a deer or elk spooking while bowhunting.

Nah, I just go in the woods to hunt and have some fun. It's too much work doing all the little things. About all I do is shower and wash my hunting clothes with scent free soaps and detergent from Atsko.

Rubber Boots

My clothes or boots never see the inside of my truck or house unless they are in a bag or tub.

I shower with scent free soap………

And that’s about it these days.

I used to have a routine similar to Sheds, it’s a tough routine and the more power to you shed………

But it began to suck the life out of the enjoyment of it all.

And to be 100% honest – I see no difference in deer sightings or spooks (I always got busted a few times a year)

The way I hunt now I don’t think radical scent plans are that important anymore. Scent is getting lower on my list every year.

I set my stands real early in the pre season. Most of them I hunt 1 or 2 times a Month. 80% of all the decent deer I took where the first hunt of a stand.

And yes I do play risky winds……………

If they smell me they live, If they don’t smell me they die………

I would rather stink like hell and be in a great stand location than be 100% free in an O.K. location.

I was thinking of having surgery to remove all the sweat pores from my body;):D:D.....maybe next season.

I just try and keep my clothes scent free with the tub idea, shower with scent free stuff and use the sprays before entering the woods.

I'm going to give the scentlok a try this fall. I got a great deal on ebay for a scentlok coverall. I also picked up scnet block gloves and head net.
I personally believe that the head and hands are the culprits that give off most of the scent.

I'm skeptical but I got all the listed above for less than 100$ so why not?

:) I agree with mantis, know matter what u do u can never remain 100 percent scent free.........NO MATTER WHAT U USE. The best way to go about is to use the wind to your advantage, that is part of the game we play and i think its fun.

not as far as some of you. i wash my clothes in scent free soap keep them in a bag. don't put them on till i reach my stand. i do spray my normal clothes that i walk in with spray but thats about all

Ok, I just have a question for everyone, and I hate to 'take over' the post, but this seems like a prime topic to ask it in.

Most of you hopefully practice with your bow in the summer, I know I will. Now, it seems to me that our hands sweat a bit when it's warm outside. I don't know, it may just be me, I could be the odd duck, but it happens. Sometimes if I'm shooting in the middle of the day I'll take a break and have lunch, then hit the targets again.

We seem so fanatic about our clothes, our skin, and the vehicles that we ride in that we never take into consideration our bows and arrows.

It just seems to me that the sweat, oils, food residues, etc would add a bit of scent to our bows and arrows. Now, have any of you ever thought of spraying this stuff down, or no?

Have you ever even thought about this? Do you think it would make that much of a difference? I'm sure most of you have harvested animals with your equipment, so it must not be that big of a deal, so why is it we mainly worry about our clothes?

I don't at all.

By the time I zig zag across a mountain a couple thousand vertical feet ain't nothing going to help me any way. Plus I really don't believe those suits are all that effective any how.

i dont quite go to that extent, but i do spray myself down real well with scent killer and also use scent free soap and deoderant. one thing i found that works well is to take my camo. and put it into a plastic bag with leaves, dirt, grass, and anythign you might find in the woods and shake it up then let it sit in there for about a week before opener. after that i just wash it in baking soda and keep my clothes outside as much as possible.

I stick to the same regiment that most do, but was wondering what people do to hide there bad breath?. I have read a few articles suggesting to take chloropyhll tablets. that or were several face masks. Or just say heck with it put in a big chew and go hunting...jk

A few things I do that have not been mentioned already.
1. Keep my armpits shaved during season. It really helps keep the B.O. down.
2. I always keep a bag of apples with me to help freshen my breath.
3. I take an old sock and fill it with baking soda. Than I shake it over each layer of clothes. If you doubt its effectiveness at absorbing odors just put an open box in a stinky refrigerator.

skeetr, yeah I do put a fat chew in!;) From what I've experienced thus far, they don't associate the smell with humans and on many occations(mostly with younger deer) it acts as an attractant. Seriously, I wouldn't yank your dank!:D

Shed how many bottles of vanishing hunter do you go through in a season?
I like most people have to brush my teeth in the morning, and i use a basic baking soda tooth paste, then have to eat a apple to try to take the scent down as much as possible. Not to say I am getting busted all the time because it, it is just a thought that crosses my mind when I do. Thanks for the reply.

Here in the South, during bow season ,being scent free is impossable.I do the scent free spray but then I have to add No Stinking Bug to stay still.The fresh earth scent seems to work great.Will it spook deer??hasn't yet.

I try to be as secent free as posible (using product's mentioned above) but like big bulls said when you cris cross a mountain several times in search of elk you are going to stink (if you think you can sit in one spot and call a heard bull in you are kidding yourself). So my sugestion is do all that you can to be secent free but work with the wind as well.

I pretty much agree with Rack. I used to do the whole routine. The new wore off of it and now I just wash my cothes in scent free detergent and store them in a rubber maid container and I shower. I use scent killer in the early part of the season and that's about it. I haven't noticed any differnce in my sightings (well I actually am seeing more deer the last couple of years) or "bustings". I think people should do whatever gives them confidence.

Only after I get halfway to my stand and have to take a nature s**t then step in it by accident[8D]

Not real far. I use some of the scent spray stuff. Hell, I used to smoke cigarettes on the stand years ago and I still killed deer. Hunt the wind and you'll do better than to believe your scent free.

I do agree that it doesn't hurt and may actually help some, but I don't have the time nor the money for the scent free clothing.

Just my 2 cents.

I follow the same strict regiment the others use.
I also eat apples before i go hunting to get rid of bad breath and drink apple juice and/or water on stand.
I spray all my equipment down every time i have touched it without my hunting gloves...
I have yet to be winded.
I do not use scent-lok.
I use cover scents, too. my clothes/equipment are packed in pine and cedar.
I spray with coon urine just before climbing into my stand.

Clothes washed in scent free soap and put in plastic bag with earth wafers and the rest of my stuff.

I use earth scented cover spray and clip some wafers to my hat if I remember.

Shower with scent free soap.........and get dressed in the field.


Scent elimination is one of the biggest money making scams out there. Not that smelling like gas is a good idea but extreme measures are overkill IMO and not needed.

ScentLock clothes should just be called "Sucker Suits" [8D]

IME, mature bucks very rarely snort. If you're hearing snorts, its does and small bucks.
All this never been winded business is a bunch of BS.

I believe in striving to be scent free, but don't fool yourselves, deer ARE smelling you and probably doing EVERY hunt.

I have seen mature bucks that are heading down a trail toward me, turn around and head back the other direction but I have never heard one blow. I always assumed they had winded something when they did this. Also, this may be happening more to me now than it used to but my results certainly haven't suffered so I guess what I don't know won't hurt me.

Most of the time its because I choose not to drop the hammer - and after they mill around and get downwind they catch me.

Of course I have a few areas I could hunt and NEVER, EVER get winded..............................

I don't think you can EVER know if you have "NEVER" been winded..... But like I said ......I have never witnessed a deer spooking while on stand after following my scent eliminating approach and have had many bucks 3.5 years and older come in from all directions including directly downwind.

As for wearing sucker suits.... boy I love mine "SUCKER SUIT ! "

heres is 2003's proof the ole sucker suit isn't so bad .... . ALL PUBLIC LAND

I know folks that would pay 3 grand a hunt or more for mature critters. I payed 119.00 for my sucker suit and very little for the scent eliminating spray.


in order 2003 4x4 November, 2003 8x8 laborday weekend, 2003 7x7 bull, oct 29th .....and yes these where the animals I was hunting...have sheds from and have on video.....public land...
