As a rule no. I have tested a great many broadheads, both mechanical and fixed. What I have found some are a good deal better than others, and some are pure junk! some basic rules for good preformance are, use a head with 1 1/2" cutting diameter or smaller, make sure your bow setup produces at least 55 ft/lbs of energy, and tune your bow for the best arrow flight. Do these things and their are many good mechanicals. The very best I have tried have been the Rocky snypers, followed by the new archery Products shockwaves, and the Rocket steelheads. If you try to use mechanical heads out of a poorly tuned bow your results will not be that good on game. The may fly accuratly but preformance will be greatly reduced.

I used NAP Spitfires to take a 195 lb. 11 point this past Nov. The shot was quartering away at 25 yrds. and I got a pass through. I do agree with 5 shot. Some of them are junk.

I used shockwaves 100's and love them. I got two bucks this year and both with shockwaves 100. First one at 35 yards complete pass through and the second I hit both shoulders and the buck never took another step he hit hard right there. I have full confidence with this head and give it two thumbs up.

It's been my experience that the finest, most effective mechs are Rockets. Of course that is following a minimum KE rule of 55ft/lbs.These heads fly and cut with deadly precision, they have ALWAYS deployed on contact and have NEVER failed me.I've tried several other heads as well and thus far the Rockets have come out on top.I've been fortunate enough to put a Rocket tipped arrow thru 14 Illinois whitetais and NOT A ONE has went farther than 60 yards!!! Rockets rule, ......bullets with butterfly wings.

hot topic with a lot of right & wrong answers depending on who you talk too. I think they have their place, turkeys is a prime example. They also work good on coyotes, bobcats, pronghorns, and other game deer size or smaller.
I have had bad experiences with one brand of them & some other people I know have too. the main problem was lack of penetration even though all rigs shot plenty of KE (60+lbs.).
I have heard a great deal of good things about rocket steelheads. I like what they have done by keeping the cutting dia. down to 1-1/8". I think the key things to watch are your KE, cutting dia., and the angle the blades set at when fully open.

Spitfire is the choice of this hunter. I dont like rubber bands or O rings. My spitfires fly just like field tips. Pass thru on a Javelina 2 weeks ago at 39 yards according to my range finder. Dead. Pass thru a white tail from 23 yards almost strait down atop a tree on a cliff. It cut thru 3 ribs going in 2 inches from the spine, spitting out the bottom of the chest.
I was a muzzy man but flight is the reason I choose spitfire 100's. I shoot 74lbs pull.
