Don't let some of these guys fool ya! I hunted snipe (it's a real bird) and I have hunted lopes. I didn't get to harvest one because of the injuries I suffered. However my older brother who uses a .45 took one that measured 29½ inches and he used 4 shots to take it down. He had it mounted at a cost of $675.00 when it only costs $295.00 for a deer mount. It is an overated animal that is just as dangerous as a sow bear with cubs.

Watch out for these things as they are CRAZY.

If you have even seen Monty Python's "The Holy Grail" then you will know what kind of damage they can cause. Many people thought it was just a plain old bunny but in reality it was a "button bunny jacklalope". Hard to see at first glance but if you look real hard you can see the nubs.

How do you scout for a jackalope ?

I have have been trying to get one myself for years..........as well as a Alabama swamp monkey ! I just haven't had any luck with the jackalopes......but I get an occasional swamp monkey sighting .......they look very similar to a spooked deer's arse running away with a mean fox like face !! Man you talking about allusive.........if it wasn't for the gas station wall mounts I've seen I would think someone was pulling my leg !

I hope to arrow one for myself one of these days ........what a trophy ! ;)

I have seen them taken with a large magnum caliber wal-mart sack. It must be one of the blue ones though.

Thanks for all of the info I'm currently putting in for a hunt in Texas, because we all know everything is bigger in Texas :D:D Found an outfitter down there promising 6 point or better. Will let you know afer the hunt.

What state are you hunting in? I thought all the states only allowed one/year. I wouldn't be advertising. There are game laws you know.

He was hunting with Fieldmouse and took em both with one shot[8D] - Sure not an easy thing to do.

If I remember the story - the DNR was in full persuit until they pulled the -draw a road on a big rock trick - and lost them

The thing that amazes me about this thread is how no has mention what excellent table fare Jackalopes truely are.
On my way to Montana I hit one with my Tahoe. The collision cause a blow out but I was fortunate enough to harvest a fresh killed lope. It was only a fork horn and those horns just tore my tire to shreds but the loss of the tire and minor body damage is a small price top pay for such fine meat.
The lope was instantly killed and somewhat tenderized when one of his main beams stuck into my sidewall of my right front tire as we cross paths at some 75 mph. It took a bit of distance to bring the Tahoe under control and to a stop. The "thump" "Bang" of his body alternately striking the pavement then my fender well was not a pleasent noise in the dark of the night along a lonely stretch of inter-state but the once I saw my prize I was thrilled.
A thorough job of field dressing the lope in the headlights and I was on my way.

Once in Camp, I was the hero who provides the greatest and rares of treats ever prepared on a campfire, Lope back straps and ribs. A meal I will always remember.

I have say they are some mighty fine eating. A good friend of mine killed one while pheasant hunting in West Texas. He brought it home and we cooked it up and it was some of the best eating that I have ever had.
