Depends on the size of the pie you make.
Common estimates are 8" to 9" diameter. Of course, the measure is the "kill-zone" from ground level and broadside. Size changes in accordance with angle and/or height.

IMO the kill zone it the 3 inch dia shot you can make at any range (out to 50 in my case), the rest is just waisted. The website that buckeye gave is a good one for looking at the anatomy.

Hmmmm. How big is the deer? I'm not really sure. I try to pick out a tuff of hair, a dark spot or even a single hair in the area about 1/3 up the body and, depending on the angle, behind the front shoulder. (quartering away, this distance would be further back than broadside). Focus on that smallest spot I can see, aim, and release.
