Bear with me a minute, this may seem like a long question, or a lot of questions, but it's really not, and your answer can be as short as you want. We talk an awful lot about speed on here, faster and faster bows, arrows, etc..From your personal hunting experiences, (not 3-D), how important is speed to you? If you shoot a relativly &quot;slow&quot; set-up, say 220fps or under, have you been sucessful at taking game? Do you think a faster bow, ie. arrow speed, would improve your game taking? If you shoot a much faster set-up than you used to, has it helped put more game on your table? If so, is it due to the greater speed, or more confidence, experience, or other factors?
Bottom line: I'm not looking for &quot;studies show&quot; answers. Strictly from YOUR personal experience, how important to you has speed been in taking game?

Speed is relative I guess. The first 35 or so animals I took with a recurve. I started an archery shop once and since I sold compounds I thought I'd try them so I could be honest with the customers. Pete Sheply for PSE sent me his original cam bow, a Mach I. I hunted 4 states that year, shot 4 arrows and killed 4 buck. Since then I've taken 20 or so animals with my longbow and haven't seen a drop of difference in making meat!

I think everybody would agree that accuracy is the most important thing. I have 2 Darton bows and like the way they fit me. I get about 235 fps out of my Excel with the set up I have now. My other Darton is a used one I picked up as a back up bow. I get about 240 out of it. I have killed severl deer with these bows, including P&Y bucks with both. The deer I taken have been from 10 to 30 yards. I don't believe in taking risky shots and strive for accuracy.

Hmm, I have to agree with everyone, speed isn't everything, I would say that accuracy is probablly top, BUT you CAN'T forget about having a sharp broadhead. You can have the fastest, most accurate bow in the world, but it won't make a great shot unless you have SHARP broadheads.

Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet
P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^)

the biggest factor in me taking more game, is learning how to hunt better. That said, as far as equipment, I think arrow speed had saved my bacon more than a couple of times. I use only one pin and the faster my arrow, helps me. the differnce between 215 fps and 270 is fairly impressive for me.

First, I do shoot 3-D, so that speed is 280FPS. However, for hunting I try to stay around 260-250FPS. For me that is a medium speed for my bows, they are forgiving,quiet but that is still more than enough speed for penetration and errors in yardage of my personal maximum hunting shots of 30yards.

Speed does not kill deer. Never has... never will.

However, accuracy will get the job done every time.

Naaaaah... that wasn't my intent. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Sure... speed can be a contributing factor to a successful harvest... but an accurately placed arrow traveling at 140fps from a recurve will kill a deer before an inaccurate arrow traveling at 300fps.

Hey, Lil... I think I can see tha can of worms you are talking about.

My point is... Speed isn't everything. It may be a contributing factor of accuracy... but it's not at the top of the list.

Also... it is my opinion that hunters should be more concerned with &quot;accuracy&quot; than &quot;speed&quot;.

I know a guy who lost two animals this year and made the comment, &quot;I have no idea how I lost/missed them... I am shooting at 275fps.&quot;

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which is more important.
