RE: using a crossbow?
Charlie P - I'm always good for a debate, aint I ? Thing is, crossbows are a pet peeve of mine .... errr rather the dislike of crossbows. its a bow, a hunting weapon, legal in almost all state and even in some states during archery season. The reason they are not in general archery season everywhere is that the compound manufacturers know they'll loose money and fight it every step of the way.
MORE hunters are never a bad thing unless you're selfish or unless its detrimental to hunting overall - and crossbows are not. |
RE: using a crossbow?
I hunt with a recurve bow mostly but sometimes with a compound. I'd try a xbow if it were legal for me to do so. It has it's advantages and disadvantages like every other type of archery "equipment". A xbow is a horizontal bow mounted to a "gunstock". It won't shoot any flatter or farther than a high speed compound. I find it slower at getting a second shot than a regular bow (I use a xbow for target shooting sometimes for variety). I especially think people with handicaps who can't pull a "regular" bow whould be allowed to participate in archery. We need to promote our sport and welcome all comers no matter what their tastes or abilities are.

I don't even know what to say to such a ridiclous statement. You have compound hunted for X years killed X deer with compound equipment and it now makes you a better than thou purist??? I don't buy it. Step down off your high horse, stop alienating "lazy" crossbow shooter and join the rest of the archery community. See ? |
RE: using a crossbow?
If they had left the crossbow laws the way they were in MD, I could easily live with that i.e.-only handicapped hunters with doctor signed permits could use them during archery season . . . or for that matter ANY season. By opening up archery season to xbows a whole new crowd of yahoos has entered the woods I hunt. These guys were gun hunters who occassionally would extend their season by sneaking into the woods with their x bows during the rut. I talked to one of them a few years back and he said that they could "probably stick one at 40 yards with the crossbow." He wasn't sure about it though because he said they never shot it much. They brought crossbows in because they knew no one would hear them shoot and they didn't care to practice enough to become proficient with a compound or trad equipment. NOW, they don't have to sneak around with their x bows and are able to be there during much of the regular archery season leading to a deer herd that is far more spooky and educated. They are shooting at everything--I've already found several of their lost ones--yearling spikes and forkhorns. I also have a friend at work who hunts with an x bow. He dusts it off each year in time to head out hunting and feels like he can take shots out to 60 yards. He loses several deer every year and just laughs it off. I hate crossguns.
BTW--a few years ago, I severed the tendons in my wrist while butchering a deer I killed. A friend of mine offered me his crossbow and a doctor offered to signed the Dr's permit so I could hunt during my recovery. I turned both of them down--meaning I would miss most of the season INCLUDING THE RUT, but I couldn't do it. |
RE: using a crossbow?

Step down off your high horse, stop alienating "lazy" crossbow shooter and join the rest of the archery community. See ? Zelanzy I have not bashed x bow hunters on time in my posts. Here is both of my posts word for word. Show me where I acted like a "better than thou purist" I know this. But this was not the question at hand. The question was are they (x bows) the same as a compound. You are just nit picking by changing the question around so its relevent to your situation as a trad bow shooter. In my opinion an x bow has more negatives than positives to a person who puts his time in practicing. An x bow only benefits the people who shoot the day before the opener or are unable to draw a bow. JMO. For the record I have no problems with x bow shooters. My brother, 3 of my best friends and my step father all shoot Horton X bows. I am the only one in my group of hunting buddies who shoots a compound. My answer to this is simple. If it is legal to use where you hunt and you want to use an x bow more power to you. Here in ohio it is legal to use them, i choose to use a compound rather than an x bow for many reasons I am not going to get into. Now my thoughts on them in comparison to a compound. They are defenitly easier to use and harvest a deer with than a compound. Especially when you start talking about having 4x scopes on them, they are already drawn back and you don't need to stand when you shoot them. You only need very minimal movement to use them. So yes they are no doubt easier to use. I know quite a few people who use them. They are mostly the kind of guys who wait untill the day before archery to even shoot them and then blame their broadheads on why they didn't recover the deer they shot. I am not talking about x bowers as a whole but the ones i know. |
RE: using a crossbow?
No, you tried to make it look like I had the elitist view, when in actuality, my tongue in cheek, Devil's Advocate compound bash did exactly what it intended to - to show that crossbows are no worse nor better than compound and/or longbows/recurves and that they're all valid archey bows. Its not about who's taking the more difficult path - thats a personal choice. But you'll see MOST compound hunters against crossbows .... why ?
You'll not see 1 negative posted on crossbows and their affect on archery seasons. Its simply not there, and if it were, I'd be the first to reverse my crossbow views and call for banning them. |

He never took his son to a hunter safety course which is required and his son accidently shot himself with the crossbow. HE HAD NEVER BEFORE EVEN HELD A CROSSBOW, MUCH LESS SHOT ONE AND HIS FATHER WANTED HIM TO SHOOT A DEER WITH IT! :D Well as an avid CROSSBOW user I do have to wonder how in hell he shot himself wth a crossbow...hmmm must have shot himself in the foot.....as for your comments Dave....you are entitled to yoru opinion right or wrong & i'm not going to get into a pissing match with you about it & FYI they are called CROSSBOWS not CROSSRIFLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!That is what an ignoramus would call them!!! RE: using a crossbow?
Nitro, using a crossbow isn't 'cheating.' It's just not bowhunting.
