When you hit a deer, back or in the guts, the hole can get plugged and won' t bleed. Or many times if you hit the deer hi, with no low exit, you can get poor blood trails cause the bleeding stays internal.

The intestines and intestinal fat can really plug the hole. Hit them square and not too high and they will bleed heavily otherwise it is a crapshoot.

From my experience, high shots don' t drop blood until the abdomen fills with blood, which maybe quite some distance.

My brother shot one last year. 70 yds after a double lung and no blood. Just walked up on it and found it. He shots a Mechanical - Vortex 100 gr. Leaves a huge hole, but high exit wounds leave little to no blood.

This year, I shot a doe hit her high and the only vitals that I hit was the artery running along the back bone. Blood everywhere for 50 yds then faint for 25. Deer fell at 75. Arrow passed through half way. She broke off the carbon shaft.

Gut shot one earlier. Faint blood for 200 yds. Caught 1 lung. Abdomen was full of blood. Complete pass through, but the intestines blocked the holes and blood was very faint.

Though I am sure the other situations can and do occur I tend to have had similar experiences to sprig. If you hit high enough and do not find any blood while trailing then chances are that the body cavity will be filled with it when you gut the deer.
