My brother has a reed call going from the time he straps in at night until they roost. He generally gets good shooting every year. This year, he tried decoys, but the turkey' s themselves were skeptical, so he pulled them. I' ve experimented with turkey calls on deer during turkey season, and the deer don' t seem to be bothered in the least. It makes sense, anyone else tried this?

Deer don' t care. I just got my turkey, let my 9 year old son call him in (actually he called in the whole flock!) and on the way out we heard more calling and he wanted to see if he could call another in... so I put down the turkey and my unloaded gun and he went to work, calling almost continuously... in about 5 minutes I heard something coming behind us, it was a 6 point and coming right towards us. He got within 5 feet of us before he noticed us. I think that turkey calls may even relax the deer, you know like the deer thinks " If there' s a turkey over there, it must be safe."

I also think it calms deer. Last spring, I had a half dozen deer as close as 35 yards down wind, and they didn' t leave for a good 10-15 minutes. I was calling on a slate call and they didn' t seem to mind a bit.

I' m mainly a turkey hunter and have had many deer come in real close while calling. I' m guessing maybe the deer want their share of the turkeys lunch or they know that if turkeys are around, humans arent.
