what are some good turkey calls for a 1st time turkey hunter

Pretty much any box call or slate type call. Actually I would recommend getting a push button box call. Very easy to use and they sound really good.

This is gonna sound strange to some, but why not a mouth call? Everyone who uses one had to start at sometime,so why not right off the bat.If ya have a month or two before the opener in your state then ya got time to learn. The advantages to a mouth call over a friction call will make it worth it.

I would say about anything? Just practice. I am only 16 and I started at ten with a slate call because it was all we had. I know think that is the hardest call but I would practice my slate and diaphram call all by myself for hours!!

Easy yelper is the easiest to use. Box calls are nice> I prefer mouth and slate calls. Practice them often. I usually hit a call or two everyday.

If you want a slate type call, Knight And Hale's 'Ol Yeller is an easy call to run for a beginner and sounds pretty good too. The turkeys seem to like it as much as I do too, and thats what counts!

I don't really think theres an answer to this question. When you buy a call, every call is different. So, you pretty much are a "beginner" with every call.
If you want to use mouth calls, go ahead and buy some. I like Cane Creek's Lost Poult. Its a easy call to learn. The only trick to this call is that it takes very little air pressure.

Start with cheap ones of course. That way you won't spend a lot of money on something you don't like and once you get a feel for what works for you, you can shell out some more cash on a decent call. Personally I just buy the cheapest mouth call I can find each year and it seems to work alright.
