Default Anybody hunt the suburbs?

While talking to a co-worker today he mentioned that he has deer across the street from him " every morning"

He lives in an area that I' m sure is NEVER hunted because there are alot of neighborhoods in the area. I' m sure I could slip in there with my bow.

Should I try to persue this?

ABSO-friggin-LUTELY! Not only are they there getting less hunting pressure, but they are used to having human odor around them (to an extent). I hunt in the burbs every time I go out. I can see a number of houses from my stand and have watched deer walk across decks, eat from window boxes and knock over bird feeders to get a bite. Having said that, they are still deer and are by no means a " piece of cake" to bag. Take all the normal precautions.

Got a 5 1/2 yr. old six-pt last December in small woodlot behind my house last fall. Dressed 184. Had to wait until dark to dress him because of the surrounding houses. Didn' t want the kids yelling, " Look at that man hurting the deer."

The woods I own (10acres) is bordered by a subdivision. For a while I thought the deer hunting would be ruined...but have shot 3 bucks out of it. I also find many golf balls on my walk to my stand that are hit there by the subdivision people.

up until today, i had permission to hunt a prime peice of property surrounded by townhouses and and a single home. last sunday i was out looking at tracks, trying to get a better understanding of thier movement, the lady that owns the single home saw me in the woods and ask me what i was doing. i told her i was looking for deer tracks. she said, " your not supposed to be hunting deer here." i said, " im not hunting deer here, im hunting deer about 200 yards in the other direction, im looking for tracks here." she asks who gave me permission and i told her the land owners name. she said, " well, i dont believe he would give you permission. im going to talk to him about that." so she walks off with her skraggly little rat dog following behind her. this morning while out in the bush, i saw her car leave down the road that mine was one, about 2 minutes later i saw her coming back the other way driving really slow and as she got closer i could see her looking into the woods trying to spot where i was. about 2 hours later i packed it up and went home. as i was walking in the door my phone was ringing, it was the land owner asking me to cease hunting his property because she was complaining. needless to say, im bummed. however, there is another small lot about 300 yards from the spot i had been in. and if my tracking abilities serve me right, the deer were moving from that general direction in the evening. and the townhouse on the end down there had an archery target set up in his yard and i noticed a trail leading into the woods. i bet he knows something and wouldnt mind sharing it

I hunt suburban deer exclusive because I have no choice, and there are definite advantages and disadvantages.

Don' t underestimate their cunning and natural survival skills. They still know when something doesn' t belong, and I am beginning to think that they have the ability to distinguish between a concentrated human scent and scent of someone that was just passing by. They also know where people usually walk and any human scent that they detect that is off of those typical paths still smell out of place to them and will spook them. I have seen this too many times to not believe it.

Also, make sure of your shot, tenfold!!! We should always do this, but in the suburbs it is even more essential. Just imagine trying to retrieve your deer, and maybe your arrow, in someone' s back yard with the wife and kids looking out the patio door. ' nuff said. It ain' t pretty and you' ll likely lose access to that hunting site pretty darn quick.

The advantages, they aren' t usually hunted heavily so you can find some nice bucks and a decent concentration of them if surrounding farm land is hunted hard. Also, there' s fewer places for them to go, so patterning and ambushing them is much easier.

Good Luck.

thnks for the kind words grizzly,

she said to me, " well what if you shoot someones pet?" i wanted to say, " unless you have a large bull mastiff that you dress up in a cotume that is brownish tan with really black eyes, a big black nose and white rings around its eyes and nose and a bushy floppy tail with white underneath and slip hoove shoes over its paws, teach it to be really skiddish when walking through the woods with all the other bull mastiffs in the nieghborhood in costume, thats not going to happen!"

but what i really said was, " ma' am, can assure you im not going to shoot anyones pet." which doesnt mean a damn thing to her. what she heard me say was, " blah blah blah kill deer kill deer kill deer torture bad kill torture stray arrows kill guts animal death deer death torture."

when i spoke with the land owner, he said his neighbors love animals. so i could just imagine that she just doesnt advocate the sport of hunting. which is a shame because just after i got off the phone with him, i was watching the local news and there was a 15 minute segment of how PA is so overpopulated with deer. there were numerous shots of video showing deer/vehicle collisions. im not talking after the fact, im talking actual collisions. when you can get clip after clip of a random car hitting a deer crossing a road, its not a rare occurence. they said there were over 150 deaths a years and thousands of dollars in vehicle and property damage. i hope she saw that on the news while she was at home sipping her gourmet coffee.
