Default The ASAT doe...

I had some experiences over the weekend while wearing my ASAT 3D suit that I thought I' d share.

I sat in a funnel stand Saturday morning and didn' t see anything. I got down around 10, and did some mid day scouting. We have a food plot on the front side of the land we hunt which the deer were really hammering, but there are very few stand options as far as trees go. I decided to sit in a make-shift ground blind, which was basically me hiding under a bush sitting on a 5 gallon bucket I set up to give myself a shot at the 3 main trails the deer seemed to be coming into the 1/2 acre plot, and settled in. I was in the wide open from the side, but didn' t expect deer to come from that way, as they would have to come through some amazingly thick stuff.

I' m scanning the surroundings, and catch a doe slipping into the plot from where I was sure they wouldn' t come. She gets to the edge, scans the tree line, looks at me for a few seconds, and ambles in and starts munching clover. She never gave me a second glance, and I' m sitting on a bucket basically in the open within 30 yards of her. During the course of her dining, she moved broadside to me at about 25 yards, and I passed the shot.

When she was finished, she grunted, and out popped juniorette for her mid day snack. As soon as the yearling hit the field, the doe went on red alert, with me the object of her attention. I' m sure she thought to her self " hey that bush growing out of that 5 gallon bucket wasn' t there yesterday. She gave me several hard stares, head bobs, everything she had, but I didn' t move and she eventually walked straight towards me. When she hit about 20 yards out, she just stared at me, then went on her way, back to feeding. When they were full, they both left the plot.

I saw 4 more deer that afternoon, including 2 small bucks I let walk, none of them had a clue I was there. It was getting towards dusk, and I decided to kneel up and stretch a bit. As soon as I moved up, I heard what sounded like an apple hitting the ground. Then it hit me, it was a deer stomping its foot, about 12 feet behind me. I slowly turn, and sure enough, there' s a doe about 12 feet staring at me. I froze, she stomped a couple more times trying to figure out what moved, then slowly turned and walked away. I gave up for the night

The next morning in a stand was a repeat of the first, nothing moving, so I decided to pull an evening hunt on a corn field edge. The stand is in a small tree line and pretty well hidden except for the shooting lane, so I was expecting good things.

About an hour before dark I heard a twig snap to my left which turned out to be a doe. She got to the end of the point, about 15 yards to my left, and I watched her through the thick foilage. I scanned back to my right, then back left, and couldn' t see her. Figuring she moved farther out into the field, I started to stand to see if I could pick her up again. The minute I stood, I saw movement right in front of me. She had turned to walk the tree line, about 8 feet in front of me, and had picked me up when I stood. I froze, she glared for what seemed like forever. She then turned tail and ran back the way she came, then stopped. She looked my way again, then slowly walked back around the point to stare at me some more. She then followed my trail into the tree I was in, and I figured for sure I was busted, but she turned around and walked back into the field. With a tree between me and her, I eased back to my seat and relaxed. She headed about 12 yards out then turned to walk broadside right in front of me. I let her pass just a bit, then came to full draw, centered the pin, grunted to stop her and when she did I released. She mule kicked and took off at lightening speed straight into the field, only to nosedive in 7 seconds or so...

I' m sure many here are sick of hearing about the power of ASAT, but after this weekend, I' m even more of a believer. I can' t believe what this stuff let' s you get away with...

I like reading these stories.

I just got mine today at work, and I' ve shown it to some of my hunting buddies and co-workers. Of course, I got the strange looks from the non-hunters, and a few comments like, " That doesn' t look like anything in the woods!" and " Where' s the green' s?" , etc. My hunting buddies, who I think look at me as a ' book' hunter, most of my knowledge coming from reading, are saying things like, " Well, that might work in the sand hills (of Nebraska), and maybe in a cornfield." All rather dismissively. I' m trying to explain the name, but they just look at it like, " If it works for you dude" . They hunt Elk in Colorado and I told them they should try some out there, and their comment is, " It won' t last out there. It' ll be torn to pieces." I decided not to argue with them.

I' ll just wait to come in and tell them the stories as I show them the pics.

Now if it' ll just stop pouring rain outside...

I guess I' ll take the rain. It' s looking to clear up the rest of the week with partly cloudy skies and highs ranging from 38-48 through Sunday. I' m taking Friday off and am looking at temps of 44, 47, 48 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
