Default Changed: Judging Bear size/Mule deer hunting tips ?

Well I swapped my Oct. whitetail hunt in ND for a bear/mule deer combo hunt in Canada next month.

Any tips?

I have never been on a bear or mule deer hunt. And I have never been on a hunting trip that required me to fly. I also am going to be in a very remote location so there will be no bow shop to visit if things go wrong.

Any advice will be appreciated !!

Thanks,

-Brent

Have you heard about the ban on bringing meat from cervids back to the U.S.? Check out the big game forum for the link. Basicaly, you won' t be allowed back into the U.S. from Canada if you have deer meat. Horns and cape can come in, but not the meat.[:' (]

I am no expert but look for low bellies on mature males, they tend to get pot type bellies after growing to full length, Also look at the ears, Bears ears are all the same size (roughly) but as the skull grows larger the smaller the ears will appear. If the bear appears to have tiny ears by compairison to the rest of his bodies proportions he will more than likely be a good one.

if your hunting bears over bait, my guide told me if the bears back is bigger than the barrel, hes a def shooter. if not, its up to me whether or not to shoot it. after missing one bear at last light, i shot the first bear that came in on the last day.

long skinny legs on bear usually means they are young/small bears

If judging score of bear ,if his ears are straight up like a dog then he' s young and won' t score well.If they are more off to the side with a sizeable flat spot between then wack em!!! As far as size for the body up to the second ring on a 55 gal drum bait holder is good and larger is great. If the bait station is other estimate if the height is waist high (average size man?) above that' s a keeper. These are tips from several friends who hunt em religiously and have some nice bears!!! Hope this helps ,GOOD LUCK. Post some pics after the hunt?!!!!!
