Default home made bow

does anyone here use any home made wooden bows?

if so, can you give a little information on some of your hunts with it, such as what you have been able to take down with it and at what range

I have killed a few does with osage selfbow and IPE/boo bow. I have made 6 bows. Two broke. Best performer is IPE bow.

Both shoot well. My ipe bow shoots 160fps with 500gr arrow. I have gotten total penetrations.

A few problems with selfbows or non fiberlgass bows. Being strung for more than 2-3 hours can cause weak flight. Just the nature of the beast. Also cause permenant "set"

YOu don't see me string my bow until I am up in the tree. And I unstring immediately getting out.

Here is a few I have done.

This one is almost finished. I pray it stays together.

Last years bow.

One I made for my wife.

Cord? You mean string? One is a linen string. I use B50 also. I have made sinew string, but it takes quite a bit of back sinew, and don't last long. If it was plentiful, I would use only sinew.

I have made a few bows as well. A couple of my first broke but the last two have been great. The first succesful bow I made for my daughter out of ash and clear fiberglass with a walnut riser. The second was a IPE and Bamboo as well as hickory bow that came out at about 58 pounds. I have only hunted with it one time in a late season anterless hunt and didn't get a shot. Here are some pictures of the two.

good looking IPE/Boo. I have always been scared to make that large a cutout for the arrow shelf.

I was as well but if you think about it you are making up for it with the extra thickness of the riser. It is a solid bow. Need to get back at it one of these days and try some more. It is soo much fun making them.

I am still crazy about selfbows. But I have enough material to make 2 more bamboo and hickory backed bows. They were easier to tiller. Kent (burniegoeseasy) makes some of the best ipeboo bows I have seen.

I think if I started with 3/4" IPE stock, I would cut in the shelf more. But the stuff I have is tongue and groove flooring. I did use a powerlam. The main reason I want to cut in more is I have to use 40-43lb spined POC for my 56lb IPE/Boo. I know if I was more center shot I could use 50lb spine.

I also like to round off the arrow shelf a tad more.
