pine tree's?
i have seen this in pine tree's 12-15 feet off the ground...w/o the shredding...i would say its a rub just because of the shreded pulp of the tree.
i used to thin the ones w/o the shreding were rubs, till i saw them 12 foot high and higher.any ideas what it could be?

well good eye on the smashed finger part but it wasnt a nail 
....and yes 6 ft...i am 5 10 and it was above my eyes....and its a tree i walk by to go to my camera so there were my tracks and a few doe tracks but not enough snow from where i walked through to tell...and all does on my camera but no bucks yet....i will have to hunt it soon then!!
