RE: Good and Bad genetics
Cody....Now you're throwing P&Y in there. How can killing (Rybo I was agreeing with you;)) ANY young buck equate to seeing MORE mature buck? Is there not strength in numbers?
Schammel.....what I'm trying to get at is.....the 1.5spike racked buck could easily be a lae bron fawn (and almost always is). He could easily surpass the 6-8 point 1.5 in his mature years. It's been proven. There's NO WAY to know his antler potential in hs first year (unless it's "great"). You wanna kill the spikes? I don't care. I just don't want people to read this and think they shoud be doing the same on the lands they hunt...."for the sake of the herd". Wanna kill a spike? Have at it! I'll congratulate you! Just kill it and say "I wanted to kill it".....instead of...."I needed to cull it from the herd". |
RE: Good and Bad genetics
No what im saying is that were our killing the so called bad genetic deer that are breeding our does.. which is giving the mature deer the chance to do that which is giving us a better an bigger buck ratio.. srry if u didnt get wat i was saying

RE: Good and Bad genetics
Cody...
Let me ask you another way. If you have a litter of ten puppies.....and your desire is to have as many 5 yr old puppies as you can in 5 yrs..... HOW can killing the runts help this number? |
RE: Good and Bad genetics
In my opinion, there's no "excuse" for shooting a little buck. Shoot what you want, be freakin' happy with it! Don't make excuses ("he's a cull buck", "He was limping", "his nuts weren't big enough"). It gets real old, real fast. I'll be the first to congratulate you on any deer, as long as it's taken ethically.

RE: Good and Bad genetics
I think the reason you guys aren't understanding each other, is because you are arguing different things. Jeff is arguing numbers of mature aged bucks, while they are arguing the rack size AT that mature age bewteen the bucks. They aren't looking for more 4.5 yo deer, they are looking for BIGGER 4.5 yo deer than the 4.5s that are there.
That said, I think they are pissing in the ocean trying to control genetics of a wild herd on small parcels. I think IAHunter had the best point, a LOT of 1.5 yos disperse into other areas, never to be seen again. Some have an injury or malnutrition to stunt growth for a year. Some are born late, taking a few years to catch back up..and yes some are born and will naturally never reach the size as another in the same environment, my question is...how on earth can we tell what the reasoning is in an uncontrolled environment? |
RE: Good and Bad genetics
Ever since we have lived here it has been the way we said.. now before we lived here i dont know.. but since we have been practing it the numbers of mature bucks have increased alot an its seems to work |
RE: Good and Bad genetics
Cody can you show us a pictorial history of the bucks you are taking off of your farm? I'd like to see the difference from when you started this practice compared to the deer killed this year.
