But now you're into relatives. The deer the Benoits shot won't hold a candle to the average deer from the corn belt. The Benoits are shooting better than the average for the area. That's it. It can't compare to the midwest. Now throw in all the DEER FARMS where they bring in breeders and have food plots and spend thousands to grow a big rack, it's all relative I'd take a Benoit deer any day to the next Mega buck from Tecomate. I'd takea nice 8 point from NY public land before I'd thump my chest over a Tecomate Buck. It's all relative. Jim Roy shot A buck.
OH, and wait a minute. I just read your post again. I think you're saying something about I don't shoot any big deer. My my .... you just have no idea do you? I've shot deer much bigger than most hope to. I shot deer when there were hardly any deer. I shot deer before you were born. You really questioning my ability to hunt. Now that sir is really really small. I've shot deer. Those who know me will attest to that... they're here on the board if they haven't been driven off by the Groupies. It's just that some here find it easy to think they're the only ones. Pathetic. I say location is a huge factor simply because some people get on here and act as if they're the God of the woods when all they really have is a target rich environment.
The Benoits tend to get it done in Maine.
Jim Roy in West Virginia.. etc.
And there are lots of hunters in between who get it done in otherwise lesser locations.
I'm not saying location isn't a HUGE factor.. cause it is.
But you are always FIRST to point this out. Wonder why?
Which means.. only one of two things.
But I'll leave it at that.
And I never said anything about myself.. I'm simply stating your own estimations of deer hunting and "big bucks" are wrong in my opinion.

Nobody's questioning your penis size or your "trophies" and I could care less about your age. And what that matters to this conversation.. I have no idea.
I simply stated my opinion of you and your relative theory of big buck hunters and hunting. I am allowed to disagree. And I do greatly.
I noticed you stated Jim Roy shot a buck. Which makes no sense to me. But I'll just guess you have no idea who he is. And leave it at that.
The word pathetic is used by you more than once. Which is ironic to me. It is nearly everytime you post in disagreement towards another on this site.
The only chest thumping here is from you. The moment I disagreed you started banging.
And I didn't argue that location wasn't a factor. It is.. the biggest. But its no excuse either. Which you tend (just a little) to make it out to be.
I'm off to bed. I'll leave you to your bumpin' and your over use the word pathetic.
What is pathetic is that I'm pissing with some dude 1,000 miles off in New York.[&:]

I was reading an article about the Benoits back in the early 80s, one said they had been tracked a buck for 3 days and heard fur rub against pine needles from 300 yards away and knew they were close, LOL. I called BS, discontinued all I had read about them, now I laugh when I here there name.

P.S. I'm not anti big buck hunters. I'm anti those who think they're Gods because (1) they have them and (2) they've killed a couple and think they're better than the rest of the world when it comes to hunting. I always have and always will say, let me throw you in some woods and see how you do compared to the rest of the world. It's all relative. The Benoits were your example of great white hunters, not mine.

I learned that I CAN learn more in 1 night drinking beer around a camp fire than years in the field.
God gave us 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason.Listen twice as much as you speak.
Thanks grizz for that very insightful evening.[8D]
I killed my best deer ever with a bow this year and I have hunted this same area for 4 years and the last 2 I had seen nice bucks running this hillside checking the wind for does.Only took me 3 years but I moved up that hill.

when I changed from compounds to recurve/longbow bowhunting, it changed everything
you think you're a good hunter with a compound in your hand, try a season of traditional hunting - it all changes

This is my 17th year hunting, 8th with a bow. My desire and effort in my hunting are at its best right now, and have been for the past few years. I want to keep pressing forward with this same type of effort for the next 5-7 years until hopefully my son will want to bowhunt. At that time I will bring down my level and slow down to help my son.
The things I have grown most intersted in are off-season scouting and learning as much as I can about things that I am not good at, such as identifying trees/food sources and learning the little things that will help create a big pay off.
Landon, you also have to remember, we are all not getting any younger. Many of us at our age have really active families which can put hunting on the backburner at certain times of the year, due to energy levels and family commitments.

As little Timmy would say:
"God bless us"
I see the christmas spirit is in the air[8D]
I can say this, some members of my family have hunted for over 30 years. They shoot the same deer they did 30 years ago, they hunt the same spots.
When one takes the challenge of hunting mature deer, not changing year to year is a recipe for failure. Hunting mature deer forces a hunter to change tatics, stand placement and the way he hunts. For example I have been pretty much dependant on a SW wind. This has cost me two years in a row, not next year. Come Jan 2nd I am setting stands in or near bedding areas(funnels) for all the winds. I am going from 11 spots to over 20.
If you have been hunting for 10,20,30,40 or over 50. You may have learned a lot or very little. If you are enjoying yourself, does it really matter? The most fun I have had in the woods were those first years I hunted. I had zero expectations, I just wanted to see some deer. One day I hope to find that magic again

I say it so often. Shed hunters are often at a better advantage come deer season. They get more involved with their animals that they hunt than others would.
Putting miles and miles and miles on the shoe will do that.[&:]
One of the bigggest things that has been helping me is to know ALL of my area that i possably can during shed hunts. I find that parts of my woods that i used to think were hugh, and they are, seem smaller when i know every inch of it. And that helps me put the pieces together. I look for the sign when im shed hunting and new funnels, take note of it and get in there during the season.

Ive been hunting for over 18 years, but i wouldnt say I became a hunter till i tought myself how to bowhunt when i was 13. So for 15yrs i have been hunting, and its been a work in progress.
Im at the top of MY game, but not the game. Every year i learn something new, and every day i try to take what i learn and improve on it. I have also tried to take what ive learned and share it with others. I have taken some good bucks so far in my life; most with a bow. I might not have the greatest deer on the wall, and its sometimes fun to look at my bucks and seen how there progressed as I did. I get more and more addicted to hunting with every passing season, and its a passion that drives me year round.
