It's not. I saw that buck two more times and I thought we had mentioned that. What appears to be an arrow wound is only tufts of hair as Motownhonkey suggested. The hair tufts were gone the next two sightings.

(disclaimer: this is not a buck I shot at, my cousin did, it is a wound in the neck area.)

Although I do like the new cross section picture you found Germ and I agree, had it been a wound, I agree with you and not GMMAT.
