RE: The Kill - Revisited .......
i will be the first to admit i love the kill....your talking to the guy that like to play sniper and shoot groundhogs at over 300yds away and as close as point blank :)....90 degrees and sunny and im the idiot laying out there getting fried by the sun and eaten alive by skeeters and horse flys JUST for the kill. i dont have a life long kill total but its in the hundreds for sure...(just started hunting them hard last year...41 confirmed kills last year alone) but no matter what, when i get a target in the scope my heart still beats a little faster...my breathing is a little heavier...i calm myself...lay there frying some more...waiting for the perfect shot....i feel the recoil of the rifle...i hear the thud of a hit...i watch the red mist fill the air....i cant describe that feeling....its not as great as when i whack a turkey or send an arrow into the chest of a buck.....but no matter what, i love that minute before the shot and the couple minutes after the shot and the couple minutes when you first retrieve the game...
and your right...first think i do is look at the damage...its human nature... but i will never shoot a RAGE broadhead :D you should see what a ballistic tip does to a groundhog :D and i can justify my groundhog hunting....ask the farmers how much the love to hear the crack of my rifle.....they know thats one less hole digging, cattle leg breaking, machine breaking groundhog out there...id eat them if i could...but by the time i walk 300yds and gather the pieces, flies are all over the meat and its no good.... but i will still argue that im not out there JUST for a kill. i WANT to kill something. i am out there to kill something....but i try to not let the little things pass me by....and realize that there is so much more to hunting than the killing end of it. |

RE: The Kill - Revisited .......
ok ok so ive shot targets with Snypers........you got me:D
honestly, for personal reasons, i wont shoot big game with mechanicals...not to start an arguement....1000000 animals died from them....its just a mental thing with me...the rages seem to have a good track record....but lets just say murphy hates me...and i will be the one on here M-Efin rage the day i shoot a deer with one lol...so i highly doubt i'll ever over come that.... though i do LOVE the holes they make....very impressive... |
RE: The Kill - Revisited .......
I don't admit it. [:-] I've used rage broadheads the last two years and i am not impressed.
yes, they make a huge entrance hole but it does you no good when the deer is hit high and there's no exit hole. I much prefer a broadhead that will blast through the bone (and come out the other side). It happened to me last night. i hit a doe high in the shoulder with muzzy 2 blade. not a good shot, but my penetration was absolutely, flat out terrible. I've had muzzy's blow through shoulders at 170 fps, now i shoot 270 fps and I can't? When that deer was running away I thought the arrow was going to fall out, that's how little of it penetrated. i'm going back to muzzy. I had a hard time recovering 2 of the 3 deer i've shot with rage. |
RE: The Kill - Revisited .......
I shot my first deer with a Rage this year. It was impressive to say the least. An ax would not have done for damage. Ummmm.......Tony, breath in, breath out.....easydoes it bud, don't listen to those voices in your head:D

I'll admit it. I love the kill:)
That's why I am out there right? True, it's not ALL about the kill. I enjoy just sitting in a stand and watching nature happen, but then I'm ready for bloodshed:D |

RE: The Kill - Revisited .......
For me it's not the actual kill, it's that few seconds of rush that I can't get enough of. If I could get it any other way....... I hunted northern MI and waded through waste deep snow to get to stand, sat there with ice sicles hanging from my mustache, shaking sooo hard that I thought I was having a convulsion, knowing darn well that I was going into hypothermia and then a buck walks out .... nothing else matters, it's not cold anymore, I'm not shaking, it's just me and the deer.
I had a guy, whom I was working for, offer me a beer, I declined because I don't drink. He questioned me about it, asked if I smoked pot?, nope. Cocaine? nope. He asked "what do you do to get high????" I hunt and I can't get any higher than that, no drug can touch it. During high school, I dated a girl for 4 years and every year she'd get mad when season opened cause she wouldn't get to see me. Finally I told her, " I can see you anytime I want, but I can only hunt a few months out of the year and only when it's light. So I will see you when it's dark." |

My biggest thrill is the anticipation. You heard so leaves rustle, was that a deer or squirrel? Sounds to big to be a squirrel, not moving quick enough either. What is it. Heart starts pounding and you swear that if it beats any harder, whatever it is, they're going to hear it. Thats what I love about hunting.

RE: The Kill - Revisited .......
Heres the reason that I can't say anything about "The Kill". I haven't been able to kill any with my bow. I have only been archery hunting for 3 years. 2 of those years I had my son at my side giving him first shot on any deer that came in. Last year I did shot one with a bow, but he was later shot by a rifle hunter so I never got to cherish "The Kill". I am hoping that things are different this year as my son is now hunting in a different area then I am. Hopefully after Saturday I can experience that same feeling that you are talking about.

I had a hard time recovering 2 of the 3 deer i've shot with rage. blaming me and saying i need to practice more - is a cop out. marginal shots happen to the best of us. if they haven't happened to someone yet, then they haven't hunted long enough. i believe 100% that if i was using my old muzzy broadhead the arrow would have penetrated through the bone and out the other side of the deer. creating a much better blood trail then the rage did. i don't mean to cause an argument. I'm simply saying that it's not all about the size of the entrance hole for me. cripes - the last thing i want to do is start another rage argument. that's a dead horse that needs to be left alone :D |
RE: The Kill - Revisited .......
Rackluster....
NO HEAD is gonna go through hard bone.....other than a rib bone. Not one of them. THAT was my point. Keep your arrow away fromthe hard bones that'll stop BH's ....and stop blaming a BH for a bad shot. That was all I was saying. PT.....hey...serious question. If you "need the kill"......I've got a scenario for you... Let's say I could take you out with me this afternoon, here. Do you shoot the first deer you see? I'm trying (honestly!) to understand this "need". If I took you with me this afternoon.....would your need to kill have you shooting the first (all deer, here, are legal) deer that walked by? Thanks! |
