Personal info....delete if you must...

I've been in the construction industry for the past 13+ years.....and I've been grooming myself for a marketing position within my current company for over 8 yrs of that. I found out on the 12th....that I would not be getting that position.

I won't lie....I was crushed.....but Lisa and I talked about it....and we both believe things happen for a reason. I came in last Monday (15th) and asked some serious questions. What ensued from there resulted in my accepting a company "buy-out" that would have me compensated, fully, for almost the rest of this year. I'm looking at entreprenurial avenues as we speak (OK...type;))....and we know we're gonna be fine....and likely prosper. it didn't take long for things to look up....as I was offered a position with another company, just yesterday. It's something we'll discuss and think about....but the bottom line is.....I'm gonna be fine!

I tell you all this....because you're a pseudo "family" to me. My last day at my current position will be this coming Friday. So....future email correspondence (and I enjoy emailing with the guys that I've corresonded with in the past) will be [email protected]

Nothing else has changed! I'll get to hunt more this year than I imagined.....lol....and Lisa and I are still going to Mexico (again:)) in 2 weeks. We're looking at this as a positive....and a new door.

"Uneasy" is fair.....but I was scared the first time I lept off the diving board. This is different.....but not???;)

I'll stay in touch with all of you the same as always......through here. I'm gonna hunt my ass off for the next few months....and I'll let you know what transpires.

Mods....if you need to move this....simply delete it. My friends on these forums are "here"....in the Bowhunting section.

New doors.......

Good luck to all this year.;)

Thats one thing about the construction field, if you bumped of the street there is always a avenue to take.

All the best, Jeff. I updated your contact info, so I can hatemail you at any time. LOL Things happen for a reason, bro. Enjoy the break between jobs. It couldn't havecome at a better time. Give me aringsometime in the next week or so.

I'm in the same boat - could be leaving my current job on a day's notice. If the dominos fall the right way, I'd like to orchestrate a week-or-two between jobs to spend some time on a week-long honeymoon with my treestand. Work can wait.

I feel like my own business opprotunity will serve us better, Brandon....but I'll keep that in mind. You work for a GREAT company....and we've done a LOT of work for you guys in the past.

I never saw myself as a bricks and mortar guy. I'm a "big picture" person. We've come to look at this as a "nudge" towards a more secure future. I've had some ideas for possible venture on my head for years. I'll probably pick one and leap. THEN I'll get scared....lol.:D

TeeJay.....I could go to work for a present competitor, tomorrow (in this field). I have solce in that.Providing for my family....I'll do. But the package was good....and the timing is right. You are right about the industry, though....I just don't think I want to work for anyone, again....IN THIS INDUSTRY. If I go the construction route.....it'll be under MY shield.

Thanks, guys. Words are MUCH....I mean MUCH appreciated.:);)

As someone who has done a lot of bouncing around in jobs (3.5 years being my longest stint anywhere) I know you'll be fine. I'm sure it is unsettling leaving a place that has been there for you as you have been for them the last 13 years, but it is just a job after all. You've got your health, your family, and now a butt load of time to hunt.

Best of luck to you, but I'm sure you won't need it.

Better now when you have a lifetime of experience and wisdom in the ways of "things", business and otherwise, than in younger days when you may not have been as prepared. Good luck.

I'm in the process of earning my Construction Management degree and have worked in the feild for a few years. It is an interesting (to say the least) industry, one with many ups and downs.

Good luck with your new venture and may it be prosperous for you and yours. Enjoy the time off with the family and in the woods!

Speaking from experience, there are tons of opportunities out there in various aspects of your (and my) industry, if it's anything like it is here. Subcontractors, suppliers, GC's are more than willing to give an experienced manager a nice position.

There are pros and cons to starting up your business as I'm sure you are aware. I did my final term paper on that subject when I graduated in '95 (CM degree). Alot has changed but the obstacles are still there. Bonding capacity is a big concern and getting bigger with the economy as it is.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

Jeff - I envy your position to be honest. I'm in the same boat, but before I leap I have to get this wedding paid for. I can't jeopardize that. Once that is done (July 18th) I'll seriously start planning an exit strategy from my current position, and will have a plan in place before hand. I'm very fortunate to have done well for the last few years, but I know I won't be satisfied until I'm under my own roof.

Best of luck to you, and I'd love to hear more about this as it unfolds for you. Sometimes I wish we had a entrepreneur type forum here or on that other board to share and bounce ideas off each other.

Wow Jeff, best of luck to you and your family.

It sounds like you are ready for what the future brings! I'm impressedyou're handling it so well, its a BIG change and there is nothing more unerving than uncertainty about your families livelihood, but I'm sure things will work out just the way He wants them to.

Keep the faith brother!

It's REALLY ironic, guys.

Since I typed this all up.....I've been approached by yet another company (outside this industry).....which is an off-shoot to a meeting I had yesterday morning with one of our company's former owners (former CFO).

Life is good.;) All will be well.;)

Jeff,

I just made the jump in august. I went from a nice cushy secure job to working for myself. It is "uneasy" especiallysince I have young ones, but I know that the harder I work the more sucessfull I will be.

Just be aggressive and stay positive. It sounds like you have enough "outs", if things don't work out.

If you don't take the chance you will never know how great you can be!I didn'twant to be stuck dragging myself to work everyday, all the while wondering what might have been..................

Very best of luck, Jeff. I know how you feel. After 17 years in the Navy, I had to pack up and move on due to family issues. I was so close to retirement, but I made the only decision I could make. I have no regrets. I do miss the Navy, but I am very happy in my current position. I was surprised how much opportunity there is out there. There are so many people that don't want to do their jobs, that a little motivation can take you a LONG way. Again, I wish you the very best of luck and know you will excel at whatever you choose.

Jeff,
Best of luck to you with your new venture,I feel the same way that you and Lisa do about things happening for a reason. I was in the same boat you are in now just a couple short years ago and today I look at it as a blessing, I am way better off in my situation today....you WILL be fine and things do happen for a reason and you get some more time to hunt;)...Again, best of luck to you!!!!

That's the mindset we have. I worked too long with the carrot on the stick as my motivation. I (and likely my company) knew that drive wouldn't be the same without it.

You guys are GREAT.;) I appreciate all of this....but hell....I'm hunting a LOT in the coming days...weeks....who knows? I'm too antsy to let it go too long....lol....but I WILL hunt my ass off for a while.;)

Best of luck, Jeff. What I know about you is persistance, a positive outlook and determination. There is little doubt in my mind that whatever you venture out into will work perfectly well. But still......it IS a little scary, huh? Just the unknown of it. I mean, for the last 13 years, you've known what your job and duties are, and there is some security in that. Now, well......That's all changed, hasn't it? And with that comes some uneasiness, I know. Have fun in Mexico (again;)).....

So you were paid off till the end of the year right. You already have a line on another job. That is kick ass, why is everyone withing you luck. I am saying that rocks. You could be like the rest of us, big payments and no work. I would say you fell into a pile of crap and came out smelling like a rose!

Jeff,

I can appreciate your desire to get something under your belt, apply the same drive and determination to this as you do everything else and you will land right where you wanna be... good luck in whatever you decide to tackle, and enjoy your time to hunt and getaway in Mexico

Yes sir, Donnie....and I'd be lying if I said otherwise. But I look at it like this.....

If I'm not going to be fulfilled, here.....I need to find my place. I'm fortunate in the fact that I am able to take some chances some others might not get to. We live WELL (ask the guys who were just here......lol) within our means....and my wife's job is wonderful. She's also EXTREMELY supportive.

And she likes venison!:D

Hunting with my boy, today. Life is good;)

Still scary, Teej......and I admit that. I don't wanna fall into "another" "job". It's my time to figure out what I wanna do....and yes...I have the luxury of being somewhat "picky".

I find solace in the fact I'll get to hunt a LOT.....but it's still not "rosy". I hope I don't paint that picture. "Cautious optimism" is the phrase.;)

I don't care who you are, changing jobs is a scary thing, butlife is too short to be"apprehensive"about the unkown. However, somefear is a good thing, because it creates drive, which will lead to success.

If I were in your shoes I would take the money my old company gave me and bank it. Then I would take the new job being offered while I weighed my options. If you decide the new company stinks then in a few months you can take the money you banked and run your own deal. I just don't think you can lose with that option, IMHO.:)

I think you came out great. Heck, if my current company wanted to pay me out for the rest of the year and I already had another job lined up I would do it right now. And evensaying that, I work at an awesome place.I know to some degree you have to be a little apprehensive, but I have a feeling you'll be just fine.;) Best of luck!!! -Ryan

GMMAT....Good luck and like so many here have already said, things happen for a reason. I myself am "self Employed", and it is scary at times, but I can't see myself working for anybody else. I took a $100,000 pay cut right away, but the time i have with my family now is priceless. Take your time, and you and lisa will make everything work.
