Why do some of you even hunt?
After reading that dumb regulations threadI am confused as to why some of you even hunt. Some of you guys are limited to one deer. If that's not enough, some retarded states won't even let you hunt on a Sunday. [&:]
If my state were anything like that I wouldstart hunting in another state. I mean, how can 1 deer only rulekeep you engaged in a hobby? Literally, you guys might only hunt 1 day out of the year i.e. first day kill a buck or doe and then you're done.[:'(] Not to brag, but inmy state (Oklahoma)we can bowhunt for105 days (No Sunday rule LMAO) take 2 bucks and 4 does. I guess my question is why do you even bother if you can only take one deer and have restricted days of the week? All of that money, time, gear etc.. for one deer.[&:]:)Not to mention, we have a 16 day gun season and a decent blackpowder season too. |
RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
I can bowhunt 24 hrs a day, 6 days a week (1/2 hour before/after sunrise/sunset on Sunday), 365 days a year. There is a whole lot more to hunt than just deer ;).
|
RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
I can legally take 156 deer this season.
6???? :D (just kidding laughing at the 6. I CAN take 156, here, legally;)) I'm glad I don't live in a one deer state, too;) |
RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
Often I bowhunt without getting a deer all season because of self imposed limitations so I guess a bag limit of one is not so bad. Sundays off don't bother me either. If I'm all that wound up to kill a deer I can always hit other States as well. I go for the experience as a whole not just the number of kills.
|
RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
Because plain & simple, hunting isn't solely about killing something.
|
RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
We have unlimited EAB regs here. We can buy extra tags over the counter all season long (half the time they'll just give you the tags), so in theory there isn't a limit to the number of deer we can take in my part of the state (South Central WI)

RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
Rob, do you not enjoy the other 2/3's of the year preparing?Just because we're not in the woods drawn back doesn't mean we can't have fun doing other things that prepare us for hunting.

RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
It's in my blood.

RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
Quality not quantity - I can spend LOTS of time looking for a quality deer. Here in ND, we can only get 1 bowtag and can apply for a rifle buck tag. Doe tags are nearly unlimited. I can easily spend an entire Fall being choosy on where to spend that 1 bow tag.
To be honest, I didn't think you were serious at first - I thought you were mocking the other thread. To some, the number of deer harvested may be more important than quality - I'll be honest, I'm a horn hunter. If I'm going to go after bucks - I want a big one, and I'll take does for meat. And I'm perfectly happy chasing after 1 with a bow, and one with a rifle every other year, knowing full well thatif I put in the time, I'll have a chance at a great, mature buck. And, I'm pretty happy with the quality of bucks in our state vs. other states with more liberal buck regulations. |

You guys with seemingly "unlimited" bag limits.....do you not have daily bag restrictions?

RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
This would be a good question to ask.....no poll.....just have people respond, individually.
"If you live in a one deer state....do you wish you got more tags" (if your resource would handle it)? ;) |
RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
EI....if you only have a set number of tags....then you certainly ARE "limited". The first part of the question would nullify you.
|
RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
I am happy to hunt as much as I possibly caneach Fall for the "one" buck that I am after.
Many seasons I don't even shoot a buck but pass on many. I don't need to kill something to enjoy my time outdoors. |

RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
You could buy 50 tags if you wanted. You wouldn't (for the sake of arguement) really have a "limit" at that point. Would you? |
RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
I'm limited to two bucks, and can kill as many does as I can afford tags for. In fact my state added an extra doe season and is looking at expanding it. I still normally don't hunt for a trophy buck. My main concern is putting meat in the freezer, that's what I use my shotgun tag for. I take the first medium sized doe that comes walking by my stand with my shotgun, and I'll trophy hunt with my bow, unless a doe comes by late in the day and she is alone. I try and kill two does a year and only kill a buck if I can shoot a trophy buck.

RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
The way our “unlimited” doe tags are written is such that….(not quoted word for word)
Any individual can purchase and “unlimited” amount of tags at $6 each until the allocation for that unit is exhausted. I think my unit gets allotted around 65K tags. I don’t believe they sell out of the allotment. As of today I could walk over to the courthouse, plop down 6 grand and walk out with 1000 doe tags. They change the laws seemingly every year, but I believe we are under the regulation, that you can keep killing as many does in one day as long as you tag the 1st one before you go to the next one. |
RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
Yes, but I wish I had topay for it. I think if PA would let you buy a second buck tag for say 100 dollars, they would make out and still achieve management goals. Say a person couldn't buy the extra tag until they turned in their first. It would help get deer kills reported, raise some extra revenue, and allow the "serious" hunters who spend thousands on equiptment and put in a butt load of time, a second buck tag. |
RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
I can't help it.....I enjoy knowing that I can shoot ANY TIME I WANT TO. I've let a LOT of deer walk in my short time hunting....and I have no issues in doing so. I don't HAVE to kill to have hunted. But in full disclosure....I absolutely love the fact that I can shoot if I WANT to.
Would I trade this scenario for the chance ot hunt in a one tag state......if I had the chance ot shoot larger deer? Hell no. I love where I hunt. I love this freedom. |

Our state allows us alot of "freedom" to hunt. The long season and variety of methods available to take game are luxeries that some people have never known, and we should be appreciative. To answer your question. If they announced tommorow that Oklahoma is changing to one deer per year, and we can't hunt on Sundays, I would be in a treestand 23 days from now, just the same. And I would continue to do so in the years to come. I love bowhunting, and a one deer bad limit is not a good enough reason forme to stop.Even one is not always neccesary. |
RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
Part of hunting in a 1 deer/year state is that we don't exactly get shooting opporatunities all that often! There are people I know who call it a good day if they see/hear/smell a deer. I know people who go years without shooting a deer.
I can shoot 1 with my bow and one with my gun, may have to be a buck. If you blow a chance at a deer, you may very well be eating your tag! That's why I laugh when people from other areas give us crap about shooting buttons or spikes or a deer that they don't consider "worthy". When you see 1 deer every 2 years, you shoot what you can! Our success rate is in single digits. |

I think the real answer to the original question is the fact that ifthe limit was one deer, the hunting would certainly be much more challenging than what manyof us encounter today...so yes, I would hunt to kill one deer. I can remember well the times in MO in which we werelimited to onebow kill before rifle and then allowed another afterwards. I can also say that it doesn'ttake much to kill a deerwith a bow in MO anymore...I genuinely expect to kill a deer everytime I get in a stand. Doesn't always happen...obviously, but the expectation is there. |

Some of us are fortunate to have other things like Grouse to hunt.;)

RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
Thinking about it, I have no issue with the amount of deer I can legally shoot. I just wish they provided more time.I'm primarily a weekend hunter due. I have three weddings during the Rut, and countless other activities. Maybe I need to move out west and forget everyone back here...

As a fisherman I want the chance to at least get a bite versus just dangling my line in a pond with no fish. Part of it's being outdoors, but the other part is having ample chances to catch something too. I enjoy being outdoors also, but as a hunter I want the opportunity to get something. I think a lot of guys might be lying to some degree if they say it's not about getting something. We all want to get something or we wouldn't be out there. Oh well, if you're content with the constraints your state has placed on you who am I to argue? However, as a true hunter I'm glad I don't have to face that garbage.;) |

RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
South Dakota has 21 different species of wild game to hunt. We can shoot multiple deer, but we have other things to hunt as well. Pheasant hunting capital of the world, great duck and goose hunting opportunities, antelope, some elk hunting, other upland birds, and nearly everything in between.

RE: Why do some of you even hunt?
When I started Bowhunting in 1956 it was 1 Deer, either Sex. I have no problem with thatnor would I today. I ONLY Bowhunt biggame & have never purchased any Biggame gun tag-nothing wrong with it, I just love Bowhunting. Now, starting my 52 year.
I AM retired & basicallygo Bowhunting when the urge hits me. I am not out to FILL the freezer OR GET the BIGGEST head gear-I really do enjoy the solitude & ALL the things I see when in the field. Hunting has been a very large part of my life & NOW I am passing it on to my children AND Grandchildren that WANT to. My MOST enjoyable times Bowhunting are when I can share the experience with my FAMILY & so many great friends I have made over the years. Nothing beats a campfire & who can tell the best story & make EVERYONE laugh the loudest. Killing a ton of game isn't the name of the game-If it is, YOUR "MISSING" out on some of the best parts of a hunt. 1 tag or 10 makes no difference to me. Oh, and there IS many, many other things to hunt YEAR ROUND. This is a couple of them from my SUMMER time hunt in JUNE 08. Enjoy your season & hopefully, friends & family to go with you.... ![]() |
