Fountain Grove is an excellent public piece. You can camp there and there is a ton of acreage!

I turkey hunted Howell Island in 06 and there were a ton of other hunters. It is also a lot shorter season so I don't know how many people bow hunt it. If you were to go there I would recommend going in pretty far like Doubled 150 said.

Lower Hamburg Conservation Area in Atchison County. You actually have to go into Iowa and then come back down in Missouri. This area has bucks all over it. I personally saw 5 bucks the very first time I was there. Never got a shot and my buddy missed a 12 point at 15 yards...which I continually put salt in the wound whenever I get a chance.
