I'm gonna be honest with you two deer hunters going into what it sounds like is your first season.

But just so you know I am unbiased in my hunting accessories as compared with most.. especially here on HNI.

I use the scent-lok products and know (and I said know) of there potential to make you a better hunter in the woods by simply helping to eliminate odor (and this goes true with all the scent absorbtion companies). I know.. cause I came from both sides (there was a time I didn't wear it) and I know.. cause I hunt with a degree of dedication that few have.

However.. if it is your first few years taking on the challenge of taking a deer with stick and string I would strongly reccomend you to stray away from the scent-lok camos. Not that they won't help.. but its imperative at this stage in your hunting career to not spend the money on the camo.. and understand the wind.. and how to hunt with it... and just to have fun and learn about deer.

The scent-lok stuff (and any scent absortion product) is really for a more advanced hunter.. not a beginner. You will just get frustrated using it and preparing it for the field properly..

Getting out there.. learning the basics of woodsmanship.. having fun.. and learning the wind are both of your best bets.

Get out there and just start hunting.. your number one concern should be practicing for the "big event". This will be your first lesson.

I haven't even read the thread, yet.....but are we ready for some of these "awards", yet?

We need to give out some designations of .......

HNI's'HOWARD COSELL' SQUAD

Howard wrote a book one time called 'I never played the game'. The designation could be for people who constantly denigrate a product.......but have never used it.

Excellent advice from DM.

Money is tight for a new kid, spend it on more important items. Become a woodsman first and foremost, then everything can take care of itself.

IF you want to spend money on clothes, buy QUALITY rain gear & stuff that will keep you warm.

I have never used Scentlok. I'm going to be using a similar product this year, but it's a silver base, instead of carbon. I still go through scent rituals, regardless of scentlok or not.

I don't believe it's needed, especially for a kid, money is tight. I know. You could put the money to better use, elsewhere.

Yea for a birthday or christmas and load up on all your hunting gadgets. Just get what you need to get out there and hunt. Time in the stand beats any advice andyone can give you. Learn from your mistakes so when the oppurtunity comes across you can make it happen. Also, don't get frustrated when you arnt seeing deer or you arn't getting any shots. Figure out why that is happening and learn from it. Good luck

Scent lok has it's place. Some need it some don't. One reason to use it is low deer density and unfamiliar area's. If your trying to figure a place out you really have no idea if your up wind or down.

Get what you need. You won't know that until you hunt the place so I'd wait.

Do you need it? In a word No! Will it help you feel more secure and confident? Yes!

Can you forget the wind and just hunt? No, You must utlize the wind at all times, but there will be surprises. Deer will show up where and whenyou don't expect them to. When that happens, Scent-lok or other scent suppression base layershave helped me. IMHO.
