Well since our opener is on a MONDAY [:@], I'll probably be at my computer waiting for opening afternoon! But I've got a pretty good idea of where I'll be!

I'll be completely honest with you, I rarely give wind direction much thought. I hunt public land and I'm never sure from which direction the deer will come. That's one of the things that I love about just being a deer hunter and not a "trophy" hunter. I just goto my spot find a tree and hunt.;)

I usually know what stand i would want to hunt...but if the wind isn't right i choose a differnt stand that morning.

I know what land I will be hunting on opening day, which direction the wind is blowing wil determine which stand I am in on that specific piece of property.

Well the standI've beenhunting in for a few years now havehad deer coming in all directions all times of the day. I found the winddidn't matter as much as getting in there an hour before daylight and 2 hours before sunset. I also need to watch a little closer when I stand to stretch. Last year I got up to stretch and look behindme turned back around 22" spread 8 ptr walks into the field as I pull back he walkedbehind a big bush no shot. Enough of my whiningand I hunt the stand no matter what.

The main reason that I don't hunt mornings until later in the season is because I don't hunt does until gun season or late bow season. This is because the does are my "bait" during the rut. I don't want to risk messing up my area by killing does and letting the deer know that I'm there hunting until after I kill a nice buck. Besides, the bucks that I'm after are usually bedded before first light in the mornings during the early part of the season. There seems to be a better chance of catching a good buck during daylight in the evenings during the early part of the season.
Awesome piece of advise Greg. Buckeye mentioned this last year, but for a slightly different reason. He said this so that he didn't disrupt the does natural movements, so that when bucks started cruising, they had to come to easier to hunt spots/times of day (daylight)to cruise for does.

It's going to be a tough year for me this year, but I'm going to try my best not to pressure the does right in the beginning. Usually I hunt destination spots in early October just to whack does and to get one in the freezer but I'm going to try and change that for this season.

And to keep this on topic, in all honesty I won't know until within an hour of a hunt what stand I will likely be in. And sometimes it changes on the way into the woods depending on what the wind is doing. I can honestlysay I won't hunt a stand with unfavorable winds ever, and if it changes when I'm there I will leave.I alsowon't setup a stand in a position where they can "come from anywhere". I've got enough spots where I know where they can/cannot come from to never have to do this. Rob watched me call 2x in one day where the deer would come from when I put him on stand. I'm lucky enough to have 4-6 stands already hung for any wind, I can actually pick a funnel/destination/bedding stand (depending on time of year) with any wind direction. The good spots that they can "come from anywhere" I have pulled stands out of, and am working on a strategy that forces deer to move in certain directions favorable to me so that I don't have to compromise with wind direction. Maybe this is all a wasted effort, but I like to hope that it will pay off for me one of these days with a truly mature buck.

Great advice in that setting or stands.

I have some morning stands that are incredible. I'm between the deer and the bedding area and even though I know the deer usually don't show before 9, I'm in the stand at daylight. It takes them that long to come the distance from the feed fields to where I'm at.

I also don't shoot does in my buck stands unless I tagged a buck.

Truthfully, i dont even have any stands hung yet (besides the leftovers from last year). And i havnt scouted enough to know where they will be come opening morning.

Oh and to stay on topic, my honey hole/food plot stand it doesn't matter where the winds coming or going cause the deer come from everywhere. The only time I won't hunt that stand is when the winds blowing directly into a very thick bedding area. It's flat and has a very dominant wind pattern from the southwest.

See here we go again.....

We ALL (or most of us) hunt different herds. I shoot every doe I can......early or late....knowing full well it "might" be a catch-22 situation in doing so. Sure....I "might" educate some does and that "might" deter a future traveling buck.

But....I "might" limit the number of does to the point the bucks must travel more to find a receptive one. I also "might" be hunting in spots where the bucks have NO INTEREST of being.....until the rut (thereby disrupting NOTHING).

My motto about this situation is......if it ain't broke.....don't fix it.;) YOU are the greatest arbiter of your woods.
