WHile I DO believe that a mature whitetail won't travel if ALL his needs are being met......I know first-hand that all his needs AREN'T being met here.....12 mos out of a year.

He HAS to travel during the early fall to eat......or he will if the source is available.

Once the mast crops start roducing, though......he'd be a damned fool to leave his sanctuary. He has NO need to.....and I don't think he does, AT ALL.

Works both ways, if they can walk out they can walk in. Making it so that they have a limited amount of places to travel could help narrow things down a bit.

I don't think that article was all that right. One thing I know about deer hunting is, oneapproach doesn't work everywhere.

If I took articles like that into account, I might as well just quit hunting for mature bucks. Just like fishing, hunting just doesn't happen by magic....."never know until you put your line in the water......"

I saw a friend last night at a wake and was talking to him outside afterwords. This fellow is quite a bit older than I and is a consistent big buck killer with the rifle. He was seeing and watching a buck regularly last fall prior to rifle season,10 pointer 120 class deer, which for our area is a heck of a deer.It was killed by another hunter 7 miles away in the rifle season which for us begins the third week of november. It is nothing for our bucks to roam many miles in search of doe's.Our area is mountainous, vast, low deer densities, and the buck to doe ratio is way askue.
It is very common for me to be aware of bucks that were feeding in low lying fields in the summer to be killed 4 or 5 miles away in the rifle season at way higher elevations.

I think that figure is pretty believable. It would equate to about 1.5 sq miles I believe. I thinkhome range could even be biggerdepending on the type of land we are talking about.

But what do I know. [8D]
I Agree!! Depending on the area I've known of bucks covering 5 sq. miles during Rut anyway. 1,000 acres is very little ground to a Deer

I think that some are sort of missing the point... The article was not just saying that deer cover a lot of area, it was saying that trying to manage your land for mature bucks is pointless, unless you just enjoy doing it, because they will leave and most likely get killed somewhere else. Like Duke said, it is pretty common sense, but sometimes common sense can be a slap in the face
